Background/PurposeThe prevalence of obesity and overweight among children and adolescents is increasing rapidly. The present research was performed to determine the influence of a ‘‘behavior modification’’ program on body mass index (BMI) in obese public high school students in Iran.MethodsIn this study, 152 adolescence and their parents were selected from 12 high schools of Khorram Abad from 2004 to 2006, and they were randomly assigned to either the intervention or the control groups. The “behavior modification” interventional program consisted of nutritional education, modifying dietary habits, teaching exercise programs, teaching nutritional facts to the parents, and performing exercises 3 days a week. The height and weight as well as waist, hip, and wrist circumferences of the participants were measured before and after implementing the interventional program. BMI and waist to hip ratio (WHR) were calculated. The adolescents and parents completed a nutrition knowledge questionnaire. Adolescents also completed the Beck’s Depression Questionnaire.ResultsAdolescent’s mean weight, BMI, and waist and hip circumferences decreased significantly after implementing the interventional program, in the intervention group (p≤0.001). In addition, the students’ and parents’ nutrition knowledge increased in the intervention group after implementing the interventional program (p<0.046). The symptoms of depression decreased and the frequency of students without symptoms of depression increased in the case group, but it did not reveal a statistically significant difference between case and control groups.ConclusionThe ‘‘behavior modification’’ interventional program is effective in reducing BMI in obese students, and therefore, school principals and planners can play an important role in controlling obesity by implementing this program via the students, their parents, and the school staff

Background: Mother’s nutrition during lactation is a factor affecting the quality and quantity of their milk. The present study aimed to investigate the direct and indirect effects of macronutrients on the amount of their energy intake.Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Khorramabad, and the target population included lactating mothers with a lactation period of 12 months or less. Using the dietary record (DR) in three days, the participants’ nutritional status and food intake were assessed. For distinguishing the importance of variables based on their direct and indirect effects on energy, non-parametric path analysis was employed. Results: The median level of energy intake was 1719.60 calories. Carbohydrates and proteins had the strongest and weakest effects on energy intake, respectively; and the strongest indirect effect was observed in fiber, MUFA, and Isoleucine. Conclusion: Considering the path coefficients related to direct and indirect effects and the effect of each macronutrient on the amount of energy intake, lactating mothers should be informed with the help of intervention programs about the importance of having proper nutrition to receive adequate nutrients and energy

Contamination with pests is the main problems of stored food products and can defects them from harvest time until storage. Pests have high proliferation rate, global distribution, and sometimes damage foods up to a hundred percent. Nowadays plant materials are used for pest control in warehouses. Volatile essential oils are important compounds to combat fungal pathogens, insects, herbivores and pests in stored food products. Herbs and botanicals have insecticide and insect repellent properties and are good alternative to chemical insecticides. This paper was aimed to have an overview on the most important native medicinal plants against flour beetle. All required information was obtained by searching key words such as flour beetle, medicinal plant extracts or essential oils and Iran of published articles in authentic scientific databases such as Sciencedirect, Blackwell Wiley, Springer, Scopus, Pubmed, Google scholar and Scientific information database (SID) and Magiran. Eucalyptus globulus, Perovskia atriplicifolia, Azadirachta indica Adr. Juss, Artemisia sieberi Besser, Carum copticum C. B. Clarke, Cuminum cyminum L, Bunium persicum Boiss, Elletaria cardamomum Maton, Nerium oleander L, Lavandula officinalis L, Ferula assafoetida L, Rosmarinus officinalis L. Artemisia dracunculus L, Foeniculum vulgare, Satureja hortensis L, Zygophyllum fabago L, Delphinium persicum, Calotropis procera (Ait.) R. Br are the main medicinal plants can affect on flour beetle. They have various compounds and based on the results of phytochemical studies each of active compounds of medicinal plants could have potential anti pest effects against flour beetle. Therefore, it is recommended that all active ingredients are investigated in experimental and pharmacological studies and in case of positive effects, they used for production of natural anti pest compounds against the flour beetle

Background: The teacher’s evaluation is a common method to determine the educational situation of faculty members of most universities. Teacher’s evaluation system can reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the teacher’s educational status and provides the possibility for improvement of the quality of the teaching, and the educational improvement of students. It is believed that the quality of teaching through the basic science courses is one of the important causes affecting exam scores, not only in the semester’s exams, but also in the comprehensive basic science exams of students. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between basic sciences teacher’s assessments and student’s scores of comprehensive basic science exam. Methods: This research was a descriptive- correlation study in which all the basic science’s teachers and medical students of Lorestan University of medical sciences that had passed their comprehensive basic science exam participated. The mean and SD of student’s scores for their comprehensive basic science exam and also the means score of teachers' assessments were determined. Then the standard score for each course was calculated. For this reason, university’s mean score of each course was subtracted from the country’s mean score of each course. Then, the result was divided by the standard deviation of each course. Also to determine the rank position of each course of university in the national scores, the university's rank divided by 100 was calculated. Then, the rank position of each course was divided by the number of the universities participating in the exam and multiplied by 100. The correlation between the teachers' score and student's scores in overall, and in each course was calculated with the spearman test. Findings: The trend of mean score of each course through 5 years of the study was not constant. The qualitative scores analysis, i.e. very good, good, median, weak, very weak had also the same trend. Moreover, the Spearman test indicated that there is no correlation between medical students’s score of comprehensive basic science exam and the total score, and score of teachers of the individual courses. Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, the situation of the medical student’s score of comprehensive basic science exam could be affected by some factors other than their teacher's evaluation scores.
