Anisotropic Wormhole: Tunneling in Time and Space

    Get PDF
We discuss the structure of a gravitational Euclidean instanton obtained through coupling of gravity to electromagnetism. This Euclidean solution can be interpreted as a tunneling to a hyperbolic space (baby universe) or alternatively as a static wormhole that joins two asymptotically flat spaces of a Reissner-Nordström type solution

Metrofission project: An overview of the ENEA contribution

Abstract The paper describes the progress made by ENEA-INMRI in the research carried out within the framework of the Joint Research Project (JRP) ENG08 Metrofission of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP). This JRP aims to solve important problems related to the development of the Generation IV (GenIV) nuclear power plants in Europe as required by new demands of energy supplies that must be secure, sustainable, of high quality and also able to reduce the green house gas emissions. In the Metrofission project the ENEA-INMRI is directly involved in three Working Packages (WPs): the WP6, that aims to develop a portable Triple-to-Double-Coincidence-Ratio (TDCR) system for measuring in-situ of pure beta radionuclides; the WP7, devoted to the development of modern acquisition techniques based on Digital Coincidence Counting (DCC) with high sampling speed for radionuclide standardization; the WP8, leaded by ENEA-INMRI, which takes into account the impact of the project toward the end-users and the nuclear industry. The new prototype of the ENEA-INMRI portable TDCR counter will be presented. The preliminary results obtained in the activity measurements of 14C and 63Ni standard sources carried out by the new counter equipped with the new front-end electronics based on the CAEN Digitizer DT5720 will be discussed

Weekly versus three weeks chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer. A meta-analysis

Aim: Three weeks paclitaxel and carboplatin has been considered the standard of care for primary treatment of ovarian cancer (OC). Whether weekly therapy will further improve the clinical outcomes or not is still unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare the two regimens. Method: Articles were selected with a systematic approach, using PubMed databases. Trials concerning comparison between carboplatin plus weekly paclitaxel (dose-dense regimen) and carboplatin plus paclitaxel every 3 weeks were considered. Outcomes included overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS) and severe acute toxicity. Results: Dose-dense regimen was associated with significant improvement of PFS compared with standard schedule, with HR of 0.73 (95% CI 0.61-0.88, p = 0.001). There was no difference in OS between treatment regimens (HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.77-1.16, p=0.06), as well as in term of severe acute toxicity. Conclusion: Dose-dense regimen is superior to standard schedule in terms of PFS. Further studies are necessary to firmly confirm this evidence in advanced OC treatment

Sex-specific tonic 2-arachidonoylglycerol signaling at inhibitory inputs onto dopamine neurons of Lister Hooded rats

Addiction as a psychiatric disorder involves interaction of inherited predispositions and environmental factors. Similarly to humans, laboratory animals self-administer addictive drugs, whose appetitive properties result from activation and suppression of brain reward and aversive pathways, respectively. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) where dopamine (DA) cells are located is a key component of brain reward circuitry, whereas the rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) critically regulates aversive behaviors. Reduced responses to either aversive intrinsic components of addictive drugs or to negative consequences of compulsive drug taking might contribute to vulnerability to addiction. In this regard, female Lister Hooded (LH) rats are more vulnerable than male counterparts to cannabinoid self-administration. We, therefore, took advantage of sex differences displayed by LH rats, and studied VTA DA neuronal properties to unveil functional differences. Electrophysiological properties of DA cells were examined performing either single cell extracellular recordings in anesthetized rats or whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in slices. In vivo, DA cell spontaneous activity was similar, though sex differences were observed in RMTg-induced inhibition of DA neurons. In vitro, DA cells showed similar intrinsic and synaptic properties. However, females displayed larger depolarization-induced suppression of inhibition (DSI) than male LH rats. DSI, an endocannabinoid-mediated form of short term plasticity, was mediated by 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) activating type 1-cannabinoid (CB1) receptors. We found that sex-dependent differences in DSI magnitude were not ascribed to CB1 number and/or function, but rather to a tonic 2-AG signaling. We suggest that sex specific tonic 2-AG signaling might contribute to regulate responses to aversive intrinsic properties to cannabinoids, thus resulting in faster acquisition/initiation of cannabinoid taking and, eventually, in progression to addiction

GePpeTto Carves Italian into a Language Model

In the last few years, pre-trained neural architectures have provided impressive improvements across several NLP tasks. Still, generative language models are available mainly for English. We develop GePpeTto, the first generative language model for Italian, built using the GPT-2 architecture. We provide a thorough analysis of GePpeTto's quality by means of both an automatic and a human-based evaluation. The automatic assessment consists in (i) calculating perplexity across different genres and (ii) a profiling analysis over GePpeTto's writing characteristics. We find that GePpeTto's production is a sort of bonsai version of human production, with shorter but yet complex sentences. Human evaluation is performed over a sentence completion task, where GePpeTto's output is judged as natural more often than not, and much closer to the original human texts than to a simpler language model which we take as baseline
