Marcia and Kelly Brown discuss how they started their family farm, and how it wasn\u27t their original path they planned but how they loved the values family farming taught. They also talk about the chores on the farm for the children, and about their family as a whole. Finally, they discuss farming, schooling, and the hardships they experience on a family farm but the joy they get from their farm.https://digital.kenyon.edu/ffp_interviews/1010/thumbnail.jp

Developing Culturally Sensitive Education an Hmong Americans with Diabetes

    Get PDF
Despite advances in medical care for diabetes, a diabetes health disparity exists among ethnic minorities. Diabetes is a new concept for Hmong Americans. Research has highlighted the high risk that Hmong Americans face of having this chronic disease. This dissertation is a compendium of three manuscripts related to diabetes care in the Hmong population. The first manuscript is a scoping review of the prevalence of diabetes and factors affecting diabetes care in the Hmong American population. Sustaining self-management is often difficult for people with diabetes. The second manuscript focuses on sustaining self-management behaviors using a theoretical model that describes strategies for multi-level interventions. The third manuscript is a qualitative grounded study that explores the diabetes education experience of a group of Hmong Americans living in Central California. Both an inductive and deductive method of analysis was applied to this study to identify themes in diabetes education experience. The information presented within this dissertation creates the foundation for future studies focusing on diabetes in the Hmong and implementing culturally appropriate education interventions to increase access to health care and thus, improve diabetes outcomes in Hmong Americans

Modes of cyberstalking and cyberharassment: measuring the negative effects in the lives of victims in the UK

Cyberstalking may occur solely in the digital realm, or may form part of a wider campaign targeting individuals on and off-line. The impact cyberstalking has on victims may differ depending on the type. In this paper, we use Sheridan and Grant's (2007) classifications of, "Proximal with offline", "Online only" and "Cross-over" stalking types. These classifications are applied to responses gathered from 278 victims of cyberstalking and cyberharassment through the 2011-2014 ECHO survey. We analyse the responses to first classify the type of stalking experienced and then the reported number and types of effects in the life of the victims on a per-group basis. Using chi-square analysis, we identify that victims in the case of proximal and Cross-over stalking are significantly more likely to report negative changes to their work, relationships and financial lives and to report more negative changes in these areas than those experiencing online only. In addition, in the relationship category Cross-over cases provoke significantly more changes than proximal cases. This indicates that cases where the stalker moves from being an online presence to a proximal presence have an extreme impact and therefore should be treated with the utmost concern, both in terms of support and safeguarding strategies

Alcohol management plans and related alcohol reforms

Abstract Indigenous Justice Clearinghouse Research Brief 16 provides an analysis of Alcohol Management Plans (AMPs); a relatively new instrument joining the extensive range of regulations relating to alcohol supply and consumption. AMPs vary in design and implementation across Australia, and include strategies designed to reduce harms resulting from alcohol misuse. The authors chart the background and development of these instruments in Australia, as well as providing a comparison to international alcohol supply and control reforms. The authors find that evaluations in the public domain are limited. These evaluations appear to indicate that where AMPs are locally driven and owned, there are stronger and more sustainable outcomes. There is a good evidence base for the individual components that make up an AMP. Success has been achieved through alcohol restrictions, and both harm and demand reduction strategies have an evidence base as targeted interventions. The authors conclude that as more AMPs are implemented across Australia, there is a greater need for further research to better understand the process of implementation and how communities can work together with governments to design, implement and evaluate AMPs

Association of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 DNA detection and serological response in unvaccinated adolescent women

Antibodies directed against the human papillomavirus (HPV) L1 protein are detected in approximately 70% of individuals with HPV infections. The factors associated with a serological response are not characterized. It is hypothesized that the HPV viral load, duration of detection, or both would be associated with seropositivity in adolescent women. Adolescent women (n = 117), ages 15-17 at enrolment were followed for a mean of 6.2 years. Quarterly vaginal swabs (mean 22 per participant) were used to identify HPV 6, 11, 16, or 18 DNA (Roche PCR/Linear Array). Type-specific HPV infection was defined as ≥2 positive assays. To approximate viral load, Roche PCR/Linear Array test strips were scored visually based on the strength of signal relative to beta-globin controls. Sera collected near the end of study were tested by cLIA. Regression models were fit to assess associations between strength of signal (as represented by mean and cumulative strength of signal), duration of HPV detection, seropositivity, and serotiter. Detection of HPV DNA was associated with seropositivity for four types combined and for types 6, 16, and 18. Overall, 70.1% of DNA positive episodes were associated with type-specific seropositivity. The cumulative HPV DNA signal strength during periods of HPV detection for types 6, 11, 16, and 18 combined was associated with seropositivity (OR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.02-1.44 P = 0.026). No other HPV DNA predictors were found to be associated with seropositivity or serotiter
