    Integrating the academic experience: An inter-disciplinary approach to the authentic marketing research experience

    This paper describes the evolution of an innovative inter–disciplinary approach to teaching and learning in a University Faculty of Business. Further, it reviews the implementation of a series of unique, integrated and authentic assessments involving units based in the marketing, urban planning and business communication disciplines. The project has used the production of Revitalization Plans for the University‘s campuses as the basis for integrating student teaching and learning. It has championed an approach which moves away from the traditional ‗silo‘ methods of academic assessment to integrated, contextualised learning which develops both generic and discipline-specific skills such as client/consultation roles, business communications and knowledge in marketing, urban planning, and management. The paper concludes by reflecting on the issues involved with the introduction of the inter-disciplinary approach to teaching and learning with the University

    Radicalar probes to measure the action of energy on granular materials

    International audienceMeasuring the action of energy on matter is a complex problem, especially in the case of granular materials. For example, particle size reduction by grinding generally shows poor overall energetic yields and a significant challenge in this area is to accurately estimate the energy consumed, including that stored in the particles. Fine or ultra-fine grinding processes require a lot of energy, part of which becomes internal energy and can lead to mechanochemical reactions and useful products. We studied the appearance of free radicals during the grinding of a-lactose monohydrate by means of electron spin resonance (ESR). These radicals are the same as those induced by gamma-radiation and comparison of ESR spectra intensities with those from ground products allows the determination of an `equivalent gamma-irradiation dose'. This gives a novel concept for characterizing the action of mechanical energy on matter in fine grinding by using molecular probes. This is the first example of the investigation of mechanochemical energy during the fine grinding process

    Interaction of a high-mass X-ray binary with the interstellar medium through stellar wind. The case of GX 301-2

    GX 301-2 is a high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) with strong stellar outflows. The evolution of these binaries can be closely related with the interstellar environment due to strong wind interactions. We try to constrain the energy injected in the interstellar medium by GX 301-2 through stellar wind using HAWK-I and Herschel data. We analysed HAWK-I images in four different filters (Brγ\gamma, H2_2, J, and Ks) and tried to retrieve signatures of the impact of GX 301-2 on its environment. We used Herschel data to outline the interstellar medium and the Gaia DR3 catalogue to infer the proper motion of GX 301-2. Finally, we estimated the energy injected in the interstellar medium since the first supernova event of the HMXB. Using both HAWK-I and Herschel images, we deduce an approximation of the total mass injected from GX~301-2 in the interstellar medium of Minj=3.05−0.03+0.0510−2M⊙M_{\rm inj} = 3.05 ^{+0.05}_{-0.03} 10^{-2} M_{\odot}.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Use of Living Donors for Renal Homotransplantation

    The procedure is described which is followed at the University of Colorado Medical Center for the selection and evaluation of living donors for renal homotransplantation. Priority is given to volunteers who have a close genetic relationship to the recipient. The aortogram is the single most useful test for determining which kidney to be used. If either organhas a single artery, it can be employed for homografting without fear of encountering anatomic difficulties at the time of its subsequent insertion into the recipient. Twenty-two left and 18 right kidneys have been excised. The donor operation has been a safe one. The only complications have been two pneumothoraces, one atelectasis, one transient peroneal nerve palsy, and two subcutaneous wound infections. Renal hyperplasia of the remaining kidney apparently occurs promptly since the creatinine clearance returns to or toward normal within a few weeks after operation. Interestingly, the same phenomenon is also observed in the homograft in those recipients who have a successful result. The steps in the donor operation are described for both right and left sides. Wide exposure, block removal of the specimen, and meticulous technique are required both to protect the donor from surgical accidents and to insure a homograft of high quality. Homograft cooling is provided eitherby total body hypothermia of the donor or by a method in which intra-arterial infusion of a chilled electrolyte solution isused. The relative future roles of living and cadaveric donors are discussed. The results with parental or sibling donations have been good enough to justify further employment of these sources. In cases in which a genetically unrelated donor must be used, a sounder policy may be to seek cadaveric organs, especially if the recipient falls in an older age group. © 1964 American Medical Association All rights reserved

    Interaction of vortices in viscous planar flows

    We consider the inviscid limit for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the particular case where the initial flow is a finite collection of point vortices. We suppose that the initial positions and the circulations of the vortices do not depend on the viscosity parameter \nu, and we choose a time T > 0 such that the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff point vortex system is well-posed on the interval [0,T]. Under these assumptions, we prove that the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation converges, as \nu -> 0, to a superposition of Lamb-Oseen vortices whose centers evolve according to a viscous regularization of the point vortex system. Convergence holds uniformly in time, in a strong topology which allows to give an accurate description of the asymptotic profile of each individual vortex. In particular, we compute to leading order the deformations of the vortices due to mutual interactions. This allows to estimate the self-interactions, which play an important role in the convergence proof.Comment: 39 pages, 1 figur
