    Use of ozone-based eye drops. A series of cases in veterinary and human spontaneous ocular pathologies

    Conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers are common eye disorders frequently diagnosed in both humans and animals, and are currently treated by topical administration of eye drops containing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents. The current molecules often lack efficacy because infections in hypoxic tissue contain methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; thus, new products for the treatment of ocular pain and inflammation are needed. The use of ozone, a molecule stabilized for topical use as an ozonide, could be providential due to its anti-inflammatory and bactericidal activity in certain anterior segment pathologies, in addition to promoting tissue repair properties. Ozonated oils have the same properties as gaseous ozone and are well tolerated by tissues.     Dear Colleagues, Dietary supplementation with nutraceuticals including herbs, fruits, vegetables, and vitamins has been used since ancient times to improve human and animal health by providing the optimal levels of nutrients according to the specific needs of body systems. Since the 1980s, dietary interventions have become a pillar in the multimodal management of health conditions in domestic animals. The present Special Issue addresses the most recent research on nutraceuticals in all aspects of veterinary medicine. We warmly welcome the contribution of original research papers, review articles, and short communications concerning the use of nutraceuticals and complementary feeds to manage medical conditions as wells as to improve performance and reproductive efficiency both in small and large domestic animal species. Additional topics regarding the discovery of target conditions that could benefit from dietary supplementation are also welcome

    Multivariate KPI for energy management of cooling system in food industry

    Within EU, the food industry is currently ranked among the energy-intensive sectors, mainly as a consequence of the cooling system shareover the total energy demand. As such, the definition of appropriate key performance indicators (KPI) for ammonia chillers can play a strategic role for the efficient monitoring of the energy performance of the cooling systems. The goal of this paper is to develop an appropriate management approach, to account for energy inefficiency of the single compressors, and to identify the specific variables driving the performance outliers. To this end, a new KPI is proposed which correlates the energy consumption and the different process variables. The construction of the new indicator was carried out by means of multivariate statistical analysis, in particular using Kernel Partial Least Square (KPLS).This method is able to evaluate the maximum correlation between dataset and energy consumption employing nonlinear regression techniques. The validity of the new KPI is discussed on a case study relevant to the cooling system of a frozen ready meals industry. The assessment of the proposed metric is one against Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) like indicator, typically used in the context of the Energy Management Systems

    Industrial energy management systems in Italy: state of the art and perspective

    Despite the economic crisis, the impact of industry sector Share on the total primary energy demand in Italy is still significant. The certification of companies according to the standard ISO 50001:2011 ("Energy management systems Requirements and guidelines for use"), can represent a key element in the achievement of objectives set in the 20-20-20 Climate-Energy Package. This paper illustrates the state of implementation of ISO 50001 certifications in Italy, reporting on the results of a questionnaire carried out as a part of a master's thesis project at Sapienza, University of Rome in collaboration with FIRE (Italian Federation for the Rational Use of Energy) that included the major certification bodies, certified companies and consultants. The purpose is to outline the current situation, identify the perspectives and highlight the pros and cons related to the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS). The big picture shows that Italy, one of the leading countries in energy efficiency policies, suffer from a significant delay in the implementation of the EnMS in industry with respect to Germany. The results of the survey also show that the definition of energy performance indicators, as hell as the individuations of an energy baseline and a. monitoring plan constitute the requirements most critical to comply with for companies than for consultants. It also appears that more than 35% of companies already ISO 50001 certified have received benefits in terms of cumulative energy saving above 5%, and that the main reason why they have implemented an EnMS is related to the potential impact on increasing the competitiveness of the core business

    Assessment of innovative reforming procedures for biogas obtained from organic fraction of solid municipal waste

    In the present paper reforming technologies for the treatment of biogas from municipal solid wastes are discussed. An approach based on the well-known ASPEN Plus software was adopted for the simulation of the whole process, assuming equilibrium conditions for the reactions development. The well-established steam-reforming, the dry reforming and an innovative two-steps reforming (including the basics of both models) were considered. A preliminary assessment was carried out comparing the predictions and experimental results of the steam-reforming procedure of diesel fuel. Then, the validated model was applied to the different schemes. The dry reforming (at 800 °C) showed better reforming efficiency if compared to steam reforming (at 600°C). However, carbon deposition occurs when dry reforming is in play. On the other hand, the two-steps technique demonstrated to be able to solve the problem of carbon deposition guaranteeing a very good efficiency

    Fluorescence light energy in the management of lacerated and contused wound in a horse

    Traumatic wounds are frequently faced by the equine practitioner. Although primary closure is preferred, of- ten wounds heal by second intention, a time-consuming process which may take several weeks with possible unsatisfactory functional results. Fluorescent light energy (FLE) represents an additional option in wound management and has been applied in small animal to manage different skin conditions including wounds and canine perianal fistulas. An 11-years-old Arabian stallion was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital as first opinion consultation for a right hindlimb blunt-force contusion framed by a scalloped laceration, at the level of third metacarpal. The horse received systemic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy for ten days with a limited response. Owing this, such treatments were discontinued and FLE (Phovia® Vetoquinol) man- agement was started. It consisted of applying a roughly 2 mm layer of gel on the lesion and illuminating with the blue LED device that delivers noncoherent blue light with peak wavelength between 440 and 460 nm and a power density of between 55 and 129 mW/cm2, for 2 min, at approximately 5 cm distance. After illumination, the gel was gently removed using sterile gauzes and a second cycle performed soon after. After FLE session, a protective bandage was applied. Phovia was administered twice weekly and after four FLE applications (2 weeks) granulation tissue fulfilled the laceration. Within 10 additional weeks (5 weeks) wound showed a >90% improvement in the extent of re-epithelization and FLE was discontinued after 7 weeks in total. This fluorescence-generating system is an innovative and non-invasive wound care device that promotes healing of wounds besides allowing regular monitoring of medical advancements. The present is only a case report but the obtained results suggest a possible role of FLE in daily practice for the management of wounds in horses which deserves to be better explored

    Performance analysis of a common-rail Diesel engine fuelled with different blends of waste cooking oil and gasoil

    An experimental campaign was performed to study the behavior of a common-rail Diesel engine in automotive configuration when it is fuelled with blends of Diesel fuel (DF) and waste cooking oil (WCO). In particular the tested fuels are: B20 blend, composed of 20% WCO and 80% DF; B50, composed of 50% WCO and 50% DF; WCO 100% and 100% DF. In order to fuel the engine with fuel having a similar viscosity, this quantity, together with density, has been meas-ured at temperature ranging from rom to about 80 °C. According to these measurements, before fuelling the engine B20 was heated up to 35 °C and B50 to 75 °C. An in-house software was developed to acquire the data elaborated by the electronic control unit. Results show the trend in torque and global efficiency at different gas pedal position (gpp) and different engine speed. The experiments show that larger discrepancies are measured at smaller gpp values, while at larger ones dif-ferences become smaller. A similar trend is noticed for engine global efficiency

    Fluorescence Biomodulation for Canine Interdigital Furunculosis: Updates for Once-Weekly Schedule

    Interdigital furunculosis is a common multifactorial, inflammatory disease of the canine interdigital skin in which lesions commonly become secondarily infected. Fluorescence biomodulation (FBM) administered twice weekly has shown to effectively control clinical manifestation as adjunct therapy to systemic antibiotic. Since twice weekly regimen could be unaffordable for some pet owners, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of once weekly application of FBM in combination with systemic antibiotic on clinical manifestations of canine interdigital pyoderma, comparing the results to those present in literature. Twelve dogs diagnosed with interdigital pyoderma received antibiotic plus once weekly FBM application. Dogs were scored until complete healing based on global lesion score and neutrophil engulfing bacterial score. The results obtained demonstrated that once weekly application of FBM exerts the same beneficial effect on interdigital furunculosis healing as per twice weekly, indicating that once weekly regimen is well tolerated and is yielding similar results to twice weekly applications
