The eruption in Fagradalsfjall (2021, Iceland): how the operational monitoring and the volcanic hazard assessment contributed to its safe access
After more than a year of unrest, a small effusive eruption commenced in Fagradalsfjall,
Iceland, on 19 March 2021. The eruption lasted six months. The first six weeks were
characterized by multiple fissure openings, and the remainder was dominated by effusive
activity from a single crater. During the eruption, lava and low-level gases propagated
over the complex terrain: a hyaloclastite massif with mountain peaks up to about 350 m
asl with valleys in between. The area is uninhabited, but easily accessible at about 30 km
distance from Reykjavík. While the eruption was ongoing, more than 356,000 tourists
visited the eruptive site. To maintain low risk access to the area, it was critical to monitor
the eruption (including opening of new fissures) in real-time, forecast the transport
of gas and lava flow emplacement, and assess the evolving hazards. In addition to data
accessibility and interpretation, managing this volcanic crisis was possible thanks to strong
collaboration between the scientific institutions and civil protection agencies. The eruption
presented an opportunity to tune, test and validate a variety of numerical models for hazard
assessment as well as to refine and improve the delivery of information to the general
public, communities living near the eruption site and decision makers. The monitoring
team worked long hours during both the pre- and syn-eruptive phases for identifying low
risk access areas to the eruption site and to provide a regular flow of information. This
paper reviews the eruption and its associated hazards. It also provides an overview of the
monitoring setup, the adopted numerical tools and communication materials disseminated
to the general public regarding current exclusion zones, hazards and possible future
eruptive scenarios.International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO
Extended warm gas in Orion KL as probed by methyl cyanide
In order to study the temperature distribution of the extended gas within the
Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula, we have mapped the emission by methyl cyanide
(CH3CN) in its J=6_K-5_K, J=12_K-11_K, J=13_K-12_K, and J=14_K-13_K transitions
at an average angular resolution of ~10 arcsec (22 arcsec for the 6_K-5_K
lines), as part of a new 2D line survey of this region using the IRAM 30m
telescope. These fully sampled maps show extended emission from warm gas to the
northeast of IRc2 and the distinct kinematic signatures of the hot core and
compact ridge source components. We have constructed population diagrams for
the four sets of K-ladder emission lines at each position in the maps and have
derived rotational excitation temperatures and total beam-averaged column
densities from the fitted slopes. In addition, we have fitted LVG model spectra
to the observations to determine best-fit physical parameters at each map
position, yielding the distribution of kinetic temperatures across the region.
The resulting temperature maps reveal a region of hot (T > 350 K) material
surrounding the northeastern edge of the hot core, whereas the column density
distribution is more uniform and peaks near the position of IRc2. We attribute
this region of hot gas to shock heating caused by the impact of outflowing
material from active star formation in the region, as indicated by the presence
of broad CH3CN lines. This scenario is consistent with predictions from C-shock
chemical models that suggest that gas-phase methyl cyanide survives in the
post-shock gas and can be somewhat enhanced due to sputtering of grain mantles
in the passing shock front.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in A&
The Influence of Cardiac Diastole on Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation
No desmame ventilatório estão implicadas
alterações hemodinâmicas, principalmente
aquando da desconexão da ventilação com
pressão positiva. A sua importância
encontra-se insuficientemente estudada,
embora alguns estudos indiquem que pode
ter um papel importante no sucesso do
desmame ventilatório.
No presente trabalho, os autores estudaram
as implicações hemodinâmicas da
desconexão ventilatória utilizando a
ecocardiografia, e verificaram que o tempo
de relaxamento isovolumétrico é um bom
preditor de sucesso de desconexão do
ventilador, evidenciando a importância das
alterações da diástole na adaptação
hemodinâmica da passagem à ventilação com
pressão negativa
Transthoracic Echocardiography for Evaluation of Hypotensive Critically Ill Patient
determinação do índex cardíaco (IC).
Resultados: de um total de 208 doentes foram incluídos 198 (4,5% de exames impossíveis), com média etária de 63,4 +/- 16,2 anos, 129 do sexo masculino, APACHE II 30,1 +/- 9,9, SAPS II 68,8 +/- 20,5, SOFA 11,6 +/- 3,8 MODS 10,9 +/- 3,9. Observou-se uma mortalidade de 51% (n=101), e 168 (85,2%) doentes estavam ventilados. Oitenta e
Non-Invasive Evaluation of Central Venous Pressure by Echocardiography
Introdução: A Pressão Venosa Central (PVC),
é um importante parâmetro hemodinâmico,
reflectindo o estado de hidratação. Embora
existam estudos de cálculo não invasivo da
PVC por ecocardiografia, não está descrito
um método de quantificação exacta da
mesma.
abordagem
Hybrid or Continuous Renal Replacement Techniques for Unstable Haemodynamic Patients in the Intensive Care Unit
