    Comparing the NPS MBA resident and distance learning programs

    MBA Professional ReportDistance learning (DL) instructional modes are of interest to the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) as the school provides access to graduate education for officers posted at remote duty stations. However, studies report mixed academic achievement for general DL versus resident students, with similarly mixed findings for students pursuing Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees. Two 2016 studies evaluating NPS programs overall report lower completion rates for DL versus resident students. This MBA project was conducted to help find similarities and/or differences in four evaluation areas: entry requirement Academic Profile Codes (APC), grade point averages (GPA), graduation status, and student survey responses on perceptions of program experience. Data analyses were performed without controlling for student, course, or program-specific factors to suggest general areas for a more in-depth study. Project findings show little or no between-group differences in GPA, but DL MBA students were less likely to graduate than resident peers, who also had greater success in most math-intensive courses.     A novel method for pair-matching using three-dimensional digital models of bone:mesh-to-mesh value comparison

    The commingling of human remains often hinders forensic/physical anthropologists during the identification process, as there are limited methods to accurately sort these remains. This study investigates a new method for pair-matching, a common individualization technique, which uses digital three-dimensional models of bone: mesh-to-mesh value comparison (MVC). The MVC method digitally compares the entire three-dimensional geometry of two bones at once to produce a single value to indicate their similarity. Two different versions of this method, one manual and the other automated, were created and then tested for how well they accurately pair-matched humeri. Each version was assessed using sensitivity and specificity. The manual mesh-to-mesh value comparison method was 100 % sensitive and 100 % specific. The automated mesh-to-mesh value comparison method was 95 % sensitive and 60 % specific. Our results indicate that the mesh-to-mesh value comparison method overall is a powerful new tool for accurately pair-matching commingled skeletal elements, although the automated version still needs improvement.     Nitrification-denitrification in WSP: a mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in maturation ponds

    A pilot-scale primary maturation pond was spiked with 15N-labelled ammonia (15NH4Cl) and 15N labelled nitrite (Na15NO2), in order to improve current understanding of the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen transformations and removal in WSP systems. Stable isotope analysis of δ15N showed that nitrification could be considered as an intermediate step in WSP, which is masked by simultaneous denitrification, under conditions of low algal activity. Molecular microbiology analysis showed that denitrification can be considered a feasible mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in WSP, which may be supported either by ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) or by methanotrophs, in addition to nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). However, the relative supremacy of the denitrification process over other nitrogen removal mechanisms (e.g., biological uptake) depends upon phytoplanktonic activity

    One sixth of the world population is starving. In the meantime, producers from all over the world daily disdain billions of liters of bovine colostrum, which is seen as rich in nutrients, immunoglobulin and bioactive substances. The milk is the most expensive component in the final costs of calves breeding. Considering the impossibility of substituting the milk to feed the calf, different ways to use the colostrum have been studied however with controversial results. We have developed colostrum silage. This product is economical and possible to store in the environment for up to eighteen months. Being efficient for calf breeding, yielding income and profit to the dairy business. The colostrum silage keeps the necessary physicochemical characteristics for the development of the calves. Calves fed with this product had a significant higher weight gain comparing to the ones fed with milk. Then the milk can be used for human consumption

Whilst cell heterogeneity results in noisy oscillation rates amongst constituent cells, synchrony within the population is maintained as oscillators are entrained via juxtracine signalling mechanisms. Here we consider a population of phase-coupled oscillators and investigate how biologically motivated perturbations to the entrained state can perturb synchrony within the population. We find that the ratio of mitosis length to clock period can influence levels of desynchronisation. Moreover, we observe that random cell movement, and hence change of local neighbourhoods, increases synchronisation

    This study aimed to analyze the differences in learning outcomes of students taught by cooperative learning model NHT using simulation PhET and conventional learning, analyzing the differences in learning outcomes of students who have high activity and low activity, as well as the interaction between learning model with the level of student activity in influencing the outcome students learn physics. This research is a quasi experimental. The population in this study were students of class X SMK Tritech Informatika Medan. The tests were used to obtain the data is in the form of multiple choice. Test requirements have been carried out in the form of normality and homogeneity, which showed that the normal data and homogeneous. The data were analyzed using Anova analysis of two paths. The results showed that: The physics learning outcomes of students who use cooperative learning model NHT using PhET simulations media is better than students who use conventional learning models. The physics learning outcomes of students who have high learning activities is better than students who have Low learning activities. There is an interaction between cooperative learning model NHT PhET simulations using the media and the level of learning activity in influencing student learning outcomes. Average increase learning outcomes in the control class is greater than the experimental class

    This paper aims at sharing some reflections and results concerning some experiences carried out within a European interdisciplinary Erasmus+ project. The main themes are community and peer mediation, considered from the perspective of educational innovation and experimentation. Two on-line videorecorded meetings of the project are analysed to show that the process of the project and this article-writing was consistent with mediation, that emerges as a topic within a discipline, but also as a cross- disciplinary methodology. The collective construction of meaning becomes a way to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes while the participants are involved within interactive and constructive educational dynamics
