AbstractIntroductionRespiratory tract infections are a common cause of infant morbidity, and even mortality.Case reportA two-month old female was taken to the Emergency Department after she suddenly developed dyspnoea and a paroxysmal, spasmodic, cyanosing cough. Her vaccination scheme was incomplete and she had contact with her twin sister, who had an infection probably caused by Bordetella pertussis. The discharge diagnosis was bronchiolitis. She was re-admitted to hospital a few days later with an exacerbation of her dyspnoea.DiscussionThis case highlights the importance of following the clinical practice guidelines and the standard procedures for the diagnosis of B. pertussis, while the epidemiological context of patients should always be considered. It is important to correctly identify the aetiological agent, as the specific treatment is based on the aetiology, and both of them determine the prognosis of the patients

Trends in adult asthma hospitalization: gender-age effect

BACKGROUND: Hospital admissions due to asthma are a reliable source of information on the morbidity of the disease which, after the increase observed in the last quarter of the last century, shows a declining trend in the last few years. The aim of this study was to look at hospital admission trends due to asthma in our community and analyze some of its associated factors. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all hospital admissions involving adults aged 15 years and older with asthma as the primary or secondary diagnosis (if the first diagnosis was respiratory failure or respiratory infection) in Public Health Service hospitals in the Galician region of Spain between the years 1995-2009 (total 24,766 admissions). RESULTS: The majority of patients admitted were female (71%), over 60 years of age (64%), and admission occurred predominantly in the winter months. The hospitalization rate due to asthma tripled over the period studied, this being mainly accounted for by women aged over 60 years. Mean hospital stay was 9.2 days, longer in older patients or those admitted over the weekend. CONCLUSIONS: A significant increase in hospital admissions due to asthma over the last few years has been observed in our community, mainly involving older women. The mean stay seems long, increasing with patients' age and admission over the weekend

Measurement of inelastic J / psi photoproduction at HERA

We present a measurement of the inelastic, non diffractive J/ψ\psi photoproduction cross section in the reaction e+pe+J/ψXe^{+} p \to e^{+} {J}/\psi X with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The J/ψ\psi was identified using both the μ+μ\mu^{+}\mu^{-} and e+ee^{+}e^{-} decay channels and events were selected within the range 0.4<z<0.90.4<z<0.9 (0.5<z<0.90.5<z<0.9) for the muon (electron) decay mode, where zz is the fraction of the photon energy carried by the J/ψ\psi in the proton rest frame. The cross section, the pT2p^2_T and the zz distributions, after having subtracted the contributions from resolved photon and diffractive proton dissociative processes, are given for the photon-proton centre of mass energy range 50<W<18050<W<180 GeV; pT2p^2_T is the square of the J/ψ\psi transverse momentum with respect to the incoming proton beam direction. In the kinematic range 0.410.4 1 GeV2^2, NLO calculations of the photon-gluon fusion process based on the colour-singlet model are in good agreement with the data. The predictions of a specific leading order colour-octet model, as formulated to describe the CDF data on J/ψ\psi hadroproduction, are not consistent with the data.Comment: 31 pages including 7 figure
