Background Mangrove restoration seeks to restore or rebuild degraded mangrove systems. The methods of mangrove restoration include ecological projects and restoration-oriented technologies, the latter of which are designed to restore the structure, processes as well as related physical, chemical and biological characteristics of wetlands and to ensure the provision of ecosystem services. As important components of mangrove ecosystem, benthic organisms and crabs play a key role in nutrient cycling. In addition, mangrove restoration, such as vegetation restoration measures, can lead to changes in the benthic faunal communities. This study investigates whether the presence of different mangrove species, age and canopy cover of mangrove communities affect the density of crab burrows. Methods The Luoyangjiang Estuary, in the southeast of Fujian Province, was selected as our research area. A survey, covering 14 sites, was conducted to investigate the impacts of mangrove restoration on the density of crab burrows in four rehabilitated forests with different stand ages and canopy. Results It was found that differences in vegetation types had a large impact on crab density and that the density of crab burrows was lower on exposed beaches (non-mangrove) than under mature Kandelia candel, Aegiceras corniculatum and Avicennia marina communities. In general, the amount of leaf litter and debris on mangrove mudflats was greater than on the beaches as food sources for crabs. Two-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows that changes in mangrove species and age since restoration had different effects on crab burrow density. The effect of canopy cover was highly significant on crab burrow density. Conclusions The results suggest that in the process of mangrove restoration the combined effects of mangrove stand age, canopy cover and other factors should be taken into account. This study further supports the findings of the future scientific research and practice on mangrove restoration and management measures

We monitored the water quality and hydrological conditions of a horizontal subsurface constructed wetland (HSSF-CW) in Beijing, China, for two years. We simulated the area-based constant and the temperature coefficient with the first-order kinetic model. We examined the relationships between the nitrogen (N) removal rate, N load, seasonal variations in the N removal rate, and environmental factors—such as the area-based constant, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO). The effluent ammonia (NH4 + -N) and nitrate (NO3 −-N) concentrations were significantly lower than the influent concentrations (p \u3c 0.01, n = 38). The NO3 −-N load was significantly correlated with the removal rate (R 2 = 0.96, p \u3c 0.01), but the NH4 + -N load was not correlated with the removal rate (R 2 = 0.02, p \u3e 0.01). The area-based constants of NO3 −-N and NH4 + -N at 20 ◦C were 27 ± 26 (mean ± SD) and 14 ± 10 m·year−1 , respectively. The temperature coefficients for NO3 −-N and NH4 + -N were estimated at 1.004 and 0.960, respectively. The area-based constants for NO3 −-N and NH4 + -N were not correlated with temperature (p \u3e 0.01). The NO3 −-N area-based constant was correlated with the corresponding load (R 2 = 0.96, p \u3c 0.01). The NH4 + -N area rate was correlated with DO (R 2 = 0.69, p \u3c 0.01), suggesting that the factors that influenced the N removal rate in this wetland met Liebig’s law of the minimum

Introduction: Plant communities and soil factors might interact with each other in different temporal and spatial scales, which can influence the patterns and processes of the wetland ecosystem. To get a better understanding of the distribution of plants in wetlands and analyze their associations with environmental soil factors, the structure and types of plant communities in the eastern shore area of Lake Taihu were analyzed by two-way indicator species analysis and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) ordination. The spatial distribution patterns of vegetation and the main factors affecting the distributions were investigated.Outcomes: Sixty-six sampling sites were selected to obtain vegetation species and soil environmental factor data. Results showed that 22 species from the 66 sites could be divided into seven communities: I: Arundo donax; II: A. donax + Phragmites australis; III: Zizania latifolia + Typha orientalis; IV: P. australis + Alternanthera philoxeroides + Polygonum hydropiper; V: P. australis; VI: P. australis + Humulus scandens; and VII: Erigeron acer + Ipomoea batatas + Rumex acetosa. Plant species and soil factors in the CCA analysis showed that I. batatas, E. acer, Chenopodium album, Polygonum lapathifolium, and Acalypha australis were mainly affected by pH, whereas Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria viridis, and H. scandens were mainly affected by soil total phosphorus. Mentha canadensis and A. donax were mainly affected by soil conductivity, A. philoxeroides was mainly affected by soil organic matter and, Z. latifolia, Metaplexis japonica and P. hydropiper were mainly affected by available phosphorus. Conclusion:These results indicated that different plants adapted to different soil environmental factors and provided basic information on the diversity of Lake Taihu wetland vegetation

Enhancing long-term trend simulation of the global tropospheric hydroxyl (TOH) and its drivers from 2005 to 2019: a synergistic integration of model simulations and satellite observations

The tropospheric hydroxyl (TOH) radical is a key player in regulating oxidation of various compounds in Earth's atmosphere. Despite its pivotal role, the spatiotemporal distributions of OH are poorly constrained. Past modeling studies suggest that the main drivers of OH, including NO2, tropospheric ozone (TO3), and H2O(v), have increased TOH globally. However, these findings often offer a global average and may not include more recent changes in diverse compounds emitted on various spatiotemporal scales. Here, we aim to deepen our understanding of global TOH trends for more recent years (2005–2019) at 1×1°. To achieve this, we use satellite observations of HCHO and NO2 to constrain simulated TOH using a technique based on a Bayesian data fusion method, alongside a machine learning module named the Efficient CH4-CO-OH (ECCOH) configuration, which is integrated into NASA's Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) global model. This innovative module helps efficiently predict the convoluted response of TOH to its drivers and proxies in a statistical way. Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) NO2 observations suggest that the simulation has high biases for biomass burning activities in Africa and eastern Europe, resulting in a regional overestimation of up to 20 % in TOH. OMI HCHO primarily impacts the oceans, where TOH linearly correlates with this proxy. Five key parameters, i.e., TO3, H2O(v), NO2, HCHO, and stratospheric ozone, can collectively explain 65 % of the variance in TOH trends. The overall trend of TOH influenced by NO2 remains positive, but it varies greatly because of the differences in the signs of anthropogenic emissions. Over the oceans, TOH trends are primarily positive in the Northern Hemisphere, resulting from the upward trends in HCHO, TO3, and H2O(v). Using the present framework, we can tap the power of satellites to quickly gain a deeper understanding of simulated TOH trends and biases.</p

Measuring Environmental Efficiency through the Lens of Technology Heterogeneity: A Comparative Study between China and the G20

No full text
Drawing on a perspective of technology heterogeneity, this study advances the analytical framework for evaluation of environmental efficiency (EE) across diverse economies. To improve the continuity and robustness of efficiency estimation, we construct a Hybrid Malmquist–Luenberger index under the meta-frontier (MHML) technique to allow a dynamic evaluation of environmental efficiency and to probe the underlying sources of inefficiency. Decomposition of the MHML index into component factors of efficiency change (EC), Best Practice Change (BPC) and Technological Gap Change (TPC) allows an improved understanding of causality and enhanced guidance for decision-making units (DMUs). Empirical tests based on panel data of the Group 20 countries spanning 2000–2014 reveal an upward improving trend in environmental efficiency but is also characterized by notable evidence of technological heterogeneity. Whereas technical progress was the main cause of environmental efficiency improvements in the G20 countries, for the BRICS (i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), economic growth rates played a more significant in contrast to the role of technical change and allocation efficiency. The lagging growth rates of environmental efficiency for the G20 countries compared to the BRICS is a reflection of the fact that room for optimization in G20 countries was not as high as it was for BRICS and, China, in particular. China has been catching up with frontier technology whereas developing countries were shifting away from benchmark technology frontier. The developed economies remain the best performers and leaders in environmental technology. However, the BRICS countries, represented by China, remain on an upward trajectory of improvements’ in EE with gains from managerial sufficiency and technological advancement. The MHML index developed here provides a robust quantitative measure for policy interventions to support overall national environmental performance. Context-specific suggestions are proposed to foster efficiency gains and green transition for Chinese development scenarios against best performing economies

No full text
A comprehensive analysis of the spatial and temporal variations of heavy metals in wetland sediment can delineate the changes in possible contamination sources, providing valuable conservation strategies for further wetland management. Using the pollution index, enrichment factors, and potential ecological risk index, the spatial and temporal variations in heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn) were evaluated in Hengshui Lake in north China in 2005 and 2020. The results demonstrated that the concentrations and assessment index for most heavy metals all decreased, with that of As decreasing the most (−54.3%), which mainly benefited from the implementation of a series of ecological conservation and restoration projects. Although the assessment indexes for most heavy metals indicated non-pollution status, Hg and Cd exhibited medium enrichment and moderate potential ecological risk. Especially for Cd, the related indexes increased by 860.0%, mainly influenced by anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, the high pollution was mainly distributed nearby the regions of dense enterprises and wastewater overflow zone (i.e., Wangkou sluice, the Jizhou Small Lake and its causeway). This was primarily attributed to the discharge of industrial wastewater and Cd-polluted ecological diversion water. These findings demonstrated the necessity of the continued and targeted implementation of wetland conservation and restoration projects and identified possible contamination sources and important pollution regions that could provide insights into contamination control options and targeted management strategies for Hengshui Lake

Risk assessment of washout by slope flow along long-distance-pipeline based on quantitative index cloud reasoning-integrated weighting

No full text
The washout by slope flow along long-distance oil & gas pipelines is a common geological hazard that occurs when pipelines pass through the alluvial-proluvial fan section of mountain piedmont. Accurate and effective evaluation of the risk of single washout by slope flow is an important basis for disaster prevention and control decisions. According to the characteristics of the lack of basic research data in the development area of washout by slope flow, the complexity of the risk assessment structure and the strong randomness and ambiguity of the multi-index system, on the basis of rapid acquisition of initial data of indicators through field survey, simple experiment and sampling analysis, a quantitative index cloud reasoning risk evaluation model for slope flow washout of pipeline was established by introducing single-condition and single-rule cloud reasoning with summation integration weighting algorithm, and carry out instance verification. The evaluation results of 11 samples showed medium and relatively high risks, and the overall distribution trend is relatively concentrated. Compared with the results obtained by the entropy weight-extension method and the standard recommendation method, the proposed method is more in line with the small-scale disaster background analysis and the reality of the study area, and it’s also more beneficial to ensure the safe operation of pipelines. In this method, the obtainment of the source data is reliable, objective, and the preprocessing is simplified, the index weighting and classification are more reasonable, and the evaluation process takes into consideration of both the randomness and ambiguity of the system, which improves the accuracy and effectiveness of the evaluation results. It also provides a new way of thinking to other related research

Does salt stress affect the interspecific interaction between regionally dominant Suaeda salsa and Scirpus planiculumis?

No full text
Plant-plant interactions that change along environmental gradients can be affected by different combinations of environmental characteristics, such as the species and planting density ratios. Suaeda salsa and Scirpus planiculumis are regionally dominant species in the Shuangtai estuarine wetland. Compared with non-clonal S. salsa, clonal S. planiculumis has competitive advantages because of its morphological plasticity. However, salt-tolerant S. salsa may grow faster than S. planiculumis in saline-alkali estuary soil. Whether the interactions between these two species along salinity gradients are affected by the level of salt stress and mixed planting density ratio remains unclear. Thus, to test the effects of salt stress and planting density ratios on the interactions between S. planiculumis and S. salsa in the late growing season, we conducted a greenhouse experiment consisting of 3 salinity levels (0, 8 and 15ppt) and 5 planting density ratios. Our results showed that the promotion of S. salsa growth and inhibition of S. planiculumis growth at low salinity levels (8 ppt) did not alter the interactions between the two species. Facilitation of S. salsa occurred at high salinity levels, and the magnitude of this net outcome decreased with increases in the proportion of S. salsa. These results suggest that competition and facilitation processes not only depend on the combinations of different life-history characteristics of species but also on the planting density ratio. These findings may contribute to the understanding of the responses of estuarine wetland plant-plant interactions to human modifications of estuarine salinity
