Intraduodenal sarcoma recurrence of retroperitoneal origin: an unusual cause for a duodenal obstruction.
Soft tissue sarcomas are uncommon tumors, and intraduodenal soft tissue sarcoma manifestation is even more rare. Only three cases of intraduodenal sarcomas have been reported in the literature thus far. Here, we report a case of an intraduodenal recurrence of a retroperitoneal sarcoma causing bowel obstruction. This unusual recurrence pattern likely relates to the patient's previous resection and radiation treatment, and highlights the benefits, limitations and follow-up strategies after multimodality treatment

-NMR of Isolated Li Implanted into a Thin Copper Film
Depth-controlled -NMR was used to study highly spin-polarized Li
in a Cu film of thickness 100 nm deposited onto a MgO substrate. The positive
Knight Shifts and spin relaxation data show that Li occupies two sites at
low temperatures, assigned to be the substitutional () and octahedral ()
interstitial sites. Between 50 to 100 K, there is a site change from to
. The temperature dependence of the Knight shifts and spin-lattice
relaxation rates at high temperatures, i.e. when all the Li are in the
site, is consistent with the Korringa Law for a simple metal.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Statistical mechanics of budget-constrained auctions
Finding the optimal assignment in budget-constrained auctions is a
combinatorial optimization problem with many important applications, a notable
example being the sale of advertisement space by search engines (in this
context the problem is often referred to as the off-line AdWords problem).
Based on the cavity method of statistical mechanics, we introduce a message
passing algorithm that is capable of solving efficiently random instances of
the problem extracted from a natural distribution, and we derive from its
properties the phase diagram of the problem. As the control parameter (average
value of the budgets) is varied, we find two phase transitions delimiting a
region in which long-range correlations arise.Comment: Minor revisio
Spurious diffusion in particle simulations of the Kolmogorov flow
Particle simulations of the Kolmogorov flow are analyzed by the
Landau-Lifshitz fluctuating hydrodynamics. It is shown that a spurious
diffusion of the center of mass corrupts the statistical properties of the
flow. The analytical expression for the corresponding diffusion coefficient is
derived.Comment: 10 pages, no figure
Direct Numerical Simulation of Incompressible Pipe Flow Using a B-Spline Spectral Method
A numerical method based on b-spline polynomials was developed to study incompressible flows in cylindrical geometries. A b-spline method has the advantages of possessing spectral accuracy and the flexibility of standard finite element methods. Using this method it was possible to ensure regularity of the solution near the origin, i.e. smoothness and boundedness. Because b-splines have compact support, it is also possible to remove b-splines near the center to alleviate the constraint placed on the time step by an overly fine grid. Using the natural periodicity in the azimuthal direction and approximating the streamwise direction as periodic, so-called time evolving flow, greatly reduced the cost and complexity of the computations. A direct numerical simulation of pipe flow was carried out using the method described above at a Reynolds number of 5600 based on diameter and bulk velocity. General knowledge of pipe flow and the availability of experimental measurements make pipe flow the ideal test case with which to validate the numerical method. Results indicated that high flatness levels of the radial component of velocity in the near wall region are physical; regions of high radial velocity were detected and appear to be related to high speed streaks in the boundary layer. Budgets of Reynolds stress transport equations showed close similarity with those of channel flow. However contrary to channel flow, the log layer of pipe flow is not homogeneous for the present Reynolds number. A topological method based on a classification of the invariants of the velocity gradient tensor was used. Plotting iso-surfaces of the discriminant of the invariants proved to be a good method for identifying vortical eddies in the flow field
