Building energy efficiency in japan: A benchmark for Malaysia in the development of renewable energy technology
Governments throughout the world, including Malaysia, began to look at
diverse options in energy conservation and new energy resources, and energy efficiency
technology. Malaysia ratifying the Kyoto Protocol in September 2003 has opened the way for
Malaysian renewable energy project developers to seek financing under the Clean
Development Mechanism. Another opportunity is emerging because Malaysia as one of the
fastest growing building industries in the world, from which a corresponding increase in
energy demand can be expected every years. Japan as a highly industrialized nation has
faced serious pollution and two oil crises, and was obliged to bear environmental regulations
and energy conservation measures over the short term. However, as result of the concerted
efforts of the public and private sectors in response to the strict environmental and energy
restrictions, Japan's energy efficiency has improved over the past 30 years and oil
consumption has decreased even though the GDP has doubled. The objective of this paper
is to discuss about existing energy efficiency technology in Japan and challenges, lessons,
and current development of participation from public and private sectors toward clean
energy policy by Japanese government, which can even be follow by the developing
countries with some modifications. This study can contribute to our understanding on the
applicability of the energy efficiency method in Japan, one of the countries that succeeded in
adopting renewable energy in its national energy scenario, to become a benchmark to a
country such as Malaysia
Development of web application package to design AC substation grounding system based on IEE STD. 80-2000 for continuous education and professional training
Substation grounding is a very important aspect in a substation design which forms a safe grounding grid system besides functioning as a means of dissipating currents to the surrounding ground during normal and fault conditions, also prevents the ground potential rise during a fault from creating dangerous potential gradients on the substation ground surface that can endanger a life of a person in the vicinity of the grounded facility. This grounding study is based on IEEE Standard 80-2000 (Revision of IEEE Std. 80-1986) which serves as a guide to the safety in ac substation grounding. With the fast growing of the use on the Internet technology and the daily use of it in all life routines including education, it will be necessary and interesting to provide a learning and educational web application for the Internet users especially the engineers of them
The selection of IBS precast manufacturing plant in Malaysia using GIS
In Malaysia, the prefabrication technology is known as industrialised building system (IBS) which is defined as a complete process system of construction works where almost all the component structures is manufactured onsite or offsite, and the product is transported to the site and to be installed in the high precision coordinate joint as well as achieve high quality works, and accelerate the time of completion of the projects. The benefits of prefabrication helped the Housing Ministries in various countries to fulfil the high demand for housing especially in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Providing affordable homes are becoming a vital issue to meet the increasing demand of IBS components with the policy enforcement in ensuring the continuous demand. The most popular IBS component used in Malaysia is precast components. Over the years, the total number of IBS precast manufacturers has increased from15 in 2009 to 36 factories in 2011. Geographical Information System (GIS) can be seen as an important tool in finding new locations for IBS precast manufacturing. This paper introduced a conceptual GIS suitability model by applying six criterion factors i.e. road characteristic, proximity from the new potential development area, population census, proximity from the existing infrastructure, topography and land-use suitability. Results shows that 16 out of 25 IBS precast manufacturers with ongoing production are located in Selangor, Johor and Negeri Sembilan. However, there are still good opportunities in expanding IBS businesses in other states where the number of IBS precast manufacturers are still low
