Cross country relations in European tourist arrivals
This paper introduces an optimized Multivariate Singular Spectrum Analysis (MSS) algorithm for identifying leading indicators. Exploiting European tourist arrivals data, we analyse cross country relations for European tourism demand. Cross country relations have the potential to aid in planning and resource allocations for future tourism demand by taking into consideration the variation in tourist arrivals across other countries in Europe. Our findings indicate with statistically significant evidence that there exists cross country relations between European tourist arrivals which can help in improving the predictive accuracy of tourism demand. We also find that MSSA has the capability of not only identifying leading indicators, but also forecasting tourism demand with far better accuracy in comparison to its univariate counterpart, Singular Spectrum Analysis
An Overview of the Running Performance of Athletes with Lower-Limb Amputation at the Paralympic Games 2004–2012
This paper analyses the performances of lower-limb amputees in the 100, 200 and
400 m running events from the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games. In this paper, four hypotheses are pursued. In the first, it investigates whether the running performance of lower-limb amputees over three consecutive Paralympic Games has changed. In the second, it asks whether a bi-lateral amputee has a competitive advantage over a uni-lateral amputee. In the third, the effect of blade classification has been considered and we attempt to see whether amputees in various classifications have different level of performance. Finally, it is considered whether the final round of competition obtains different levels of performance in comparison to the qualification heats. Based on the outcomes of these investigations, it is proposed that future amputee-based running events should be undertaken with separate and not combined events for the T42, T43 and T44 classifications at the Paralympic Games

Is there a Causal Relationship between Oil Prices and Tourist Arrivals?
The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. This application note investigates the causal relationship between oil price and tourist arrivals to further explain the impact of oil price volatility on tourism related economic activities. The analysis itself considers the time domain, frequency domain and information theory domain perspectives. Data relating to the US and nine European countries are exploited in this paper with causality tests which include time domain, frequency domain, and Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM). The CCM approach is nonparametric and therefore not restricted by assumptions. We contribute to existing research through the successful and introductory application of an advanced method, and via the uncovering of significant causal links from oil prices to tourist arrivals. Keywords: Oil price; tourist arrivals; causality; convergent cross mapping; granger causalit
Deep Learning and Implementations in Banking
The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Data-driven technologies have been changing every aspect of human life and the fast-developing banking sector with its data-rich nature has become the implementation field of these fast-evolving technologies. Deep learning, as one of the emerging technologies in recent years, has also been inevitably adopted for various improvements in banking. To the best of our knowledge, there is no comprehensive literature review, which focuses on specifically deep learning and its implementations in banking. Therefore, this paper investigates the deep learning technology in-depth and summarizes the relevant applications in banking so to contribute to the existing literature. Moreover, by providing a reliable and up-to-date review, it is also aimed to serve as the one-stop repository for banks and researchers who are interested in embracing deep learning, whilst bringing insights for the directions of future research and implementation

A Statistical Perspective on Running with Prosthetic Lower-Limbs: An Advantage or Disadvantage?
Technological developments have led to the increased use of carbon fiber and prosthetic lower-limbs in running events at the Paralympic Games. This study aims to exploit a series of statistical techniques in order to prepare a response to the vital question of whether utilizing prosthetic feet can affect an athletes ability when running competitively at the Paralympics Games by comparing both within and between different classifications. The study also considers the differences between running on biological limbs and prosthetic lower-limbs from a mechanical point of view. The results from the male 100 m, 200 m and 400 m at the 2012 London Paralympic Games have been the source of this investigation. The investigation provides statistical evidence to propose that the number of prosthetic limbs used and the structure of such limbs have a significant impact on the outcome of track events at the Paralympic Games
