Chern-Simons Solitons, Toda Theories and the Chiral Model
The two-dimensional self-dual Chern--Simons equations are equivalent to the
conditions for static, zero-energy solutions of the -dimensional gauged
nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with Chern--Simons matter-gauge dynamics. In
this paper we classify all finite charge solutions by first
transforming the self-dual Chern--Simons equations into the two-dimensional
chiral model (or harmonic map) equations, and then using the Uhlenbeck--Wood
classification of harmonic maps into the unitary groups. This construction also
leads to a new relationship between the Toda and chiral model
solutions
Supersymmetric Gauge Theories in Twistor Space
We construct a twistor space action for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and show
that it is equivalent to its four dimensional spacetime counterpart at the
level of perturbation theory. We compare our partition function to the original
twistor-string proposal, showing that although our theory is closely related to
string theory, it is free from conformal supergravity. We also provide twistor
actions for gauge theories with N<4 supersymmetry, and show how matter
multiplets may be coupled to the gauge sector.Comment: 23 pages, no figure
Advances in multispectral and hyperspectral imaging for archaeology and art conservation
Multispectral imaging has been applied to the field of art conservation and art history since the early 1990s. It is attractive as a noninvasive imaging technique because it is fast and hence capable of imaging large areas of an object giving both spatial and spectral information. This paper gives an overview of the different instrumental designs, image processing techniques and various applications of multispectral and hyperspectral imaging to art conservation, art history and archaeology. Recent advances in the development of remote and versatile multispectral and hyperspectral imaging as well as techniques in pigment identification will be presented. Future prospects including combination of spectral imaging with other noninvasive imaging and analytical techniques will be discussed
Understanding microwave induced sorting of porphyry copper ores
Global demand for minerals and metals is increasing. It has been established that the impact of mining and mineral processing operations must be reduced to sustainably meet the demands of a low grade future. Successful incorporation of ore sorting in flow sheets has the potential to improve energy efficiency by rejecting non-economic material before grinding. Microwave heating combined with infra-red temperature measurement has been shown to distinguish low and high grade ore fragments from each other. In this work, experimentally validated 2-D finite difference models of a theoretical two phase ore, representing typical fragment textures and grades, are constructed. Microwave heating is applied at economically viable energy inputs and the resultant surface thermal profiles analysed up to 2 minutes after microwave heating. It is shown that the size and location of grains can dramatically alter surface temperature rise at short thermal measurement delay times and that the range of temperatures increases with increasing fragment grade. For the first time, it is suggested that increasing the delay time between microwave heating and thermal measurement can reduce the variation seen for fragments of the same grade but different textures, improving overall differentiation between high and low grade fragments
Gravity, Twistors and the MHV Formalism
We give a self-contained derivation of the MHV amplitudes for gravity and use
the associated twistor generating function to define a twistor action for the
MHV diagram approach to gravity. Starting from a background field calculation
on a spacetime with anti self-dual curvature, we obtain a simple spacetime
formula for the scattering of a single, positive helicity linearized graviton
into one of negative helicity. Re-expressing our integral in terms of twistor
data allows us to consider a spacetime that is asymptotic to a superposition of
plane waves. Expanding these out perturbatively yields the gravitational MHV
amplitudes of Berends, Giele & Kuijf. We go on to take the twistor generating
function off-shell at the perturbative level. Combining this with a twistor
action for the anti self-dual background, we obtain a twistor action for the
MHV diagram approach to perturbative gravity. We finish by extending these

Trends and transitions in the institutional environment for public and private science
The last quarter-century bore witness to a sea change in academic involvement with commerce. Widespread university-based efforts to identify, manage, and market intellectual property (IP) have accompanied broad shifts in the relationship between academic and proprietary approaches to the dissemination and use of science and engineering research. Such transformations are indicators of institutional changes at work in the environment faced by universities. This paper draws upon a fifteen-year panel (1981–1995) of university-level data for 87 research-intensive US campuses in order to document trends and transitions in relationships among multiple indicators of academic and commercial engagement. The institutional environment for public and private science is volatile, shifting in fits and starts from a situation conducive to organizational learning through high volume patenting to a more challenging arrangement that links indiscriminate pursuit of IP with declines in both the volume and impact of academic science. The pattern and timing of these transitions may support an enduring system of stratification that offers increasing returns to first-movers while limiting the opportunities available to universities that are later entrants to the commercial realm.
