    Modification of kraft wood-pulp fibre with silica for surface functionalisation

    A new science strategy for natural fibre modification was devised in which glass surface properties would be imparted to wood-derived fibre. The enhancements known from addition of silane reagents to glass fibre–polymer composites could therefore be realised for modified cellulose fibre–polymer composites. A process is described whereby the internal void spaces and micropores of never-dried Kraft pulp fibre walls were impregnated with silica. This was achieved by initial dehydration of never-dried fibre through azeotropic distillation to achieve substitution of fibre water with the silicon chemical solution over a range of concentrations. Kraft fibres were stiffened and made resistant to collapse from the effect of the azeotrope drying. Specific chemical reaction of azeotrope-dried fibre with the reagent ClSi(OEt)3 followed by base-catalysed hydrolysis of the ester groups formed a fibre-bound silica composite. The physico-chemical substitution of water from micropores and internal voids of never-dried fibre with property-modifying chemicals offers possibilities in the development of new fibre characteristics, including fibres which may be hardened, plasticised, and/or stabilised against moisture, biodegradation or fire. The embedded silica may also be used as sites of attachment for coupling agents to modify the hydrophilic character of the fibre or to functionalise the fibre surface

    Variation in the Response of Three Different Pinus Radiata Kraft Pulps to Xylanase Treatments

    Two xylanase preparations (Pulpzyme HC and Xylanasc E) were assessed for their ability to enhance the refining properties of three different Pinus radiata kraft pulps. Both preparations selectively solubilized a significant proportion of the available xylan; however, xylanase E proved to be more aggressive, regardless of the pulp type. The selective removal of pulp xylan improved pulp beatability by increasing the apparent densities of the resultant handsheets over their corresponding controls. There were, however, variations in the response of the different pulp types, with an unbleached kappa 70 pulp showing the greatest improvement in sheet densification, as compared to an isothermal-cooked (kappa 33) and a fully bleached pulp. In general, xylanase treatments improved tear strength at a given density without significant loss in tensile strength and intrinsic fiber strength. These results suggest that xylanase treatments may be a means of enhancing the collapsibility/flexibility of certain kraft fibers while maintaining intrinsic strength

    The extreme ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra of neutral to three-times-ionized strontium have been recorded in a comprehensive series of experiments with the dual laser-produced plasma technique. Striking differences were found in the spectra, which can be attributed to the transfer of oscillator strength from 3d→np to 3d→nf transitions at Sr2+ due to nf wave-function contraction. In Sr and Sr+, 3d→5p transitions dominate; in Sr2+, 3d→nf transitions are most intense, while in Sr3+ the 4p subshell opens and 3d→4p transitions are the strongest features.     The weakness of electron-electron correlations in the itinerant antiferromagnet Cr doped with V has long been considered the reason that neither new collective electronic states or even non Fermi liquid behaviour are observed when antiferromagnetism in Cr1−x_{1-x}Vx_{x} is suppressed to zero temperature. We present the results of neutron and electron diffraction measurements of several lightly doped single crystals of Cr1−x_{1-x}Vx_{x} in which the archtypal spin density wave instability is progressively suppressed as the V content increases, freeing the nesting-prone Fermi surface for a new striped charge instability that occurs at xc_{c}=0.037. This novel nesting driven instability relieves the entropy accumulation associated with the suppression of the spin density wave and avoids the formation of a quantum critical point by stabilising a new type of charge order at temperatures in excess of 400 K. Restructuring of the Fermi surface near quantum critical points is a feature found in materials as diverse as heavy fermions, high temperature copper oxide superconductors and now even elemental metals such as Cr.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures.     Changes In Apparent Molar Water Volume and DKP Solubility Yield Insights on the Hofmeister Effect

    This study examines the properties of a 4 × 2 matrix of aqueous cations and anions at concentrations up to 8.0 M. The apparent molar water volume, as calculated by subtracting the mass and volume of the ions from the corresponding solution density, was found to exceed the molar volume of ice in many concentrated electrolyte solutions, underscoring the nonideal behavior of these systems. The solvent properties of water were also analyzed by measuring the solubility of diketopiperazine (DKP) in 2.000 M salt solutions prepared from the same ion combinations. Solution rankings for DKP solubility were found to parallel the Hofmeister series for both cations and anions, whereas molar water volume concurred with the cation series only. The results are discussed within the framework of a desolvation energy model that attributes solute-specific changes in equilibria to solute-dependent changes in the free energy of bulk water

    Severe mental illness and chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional study in the United Kingdom

    OBJECTIVE: We investigated the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients with severe mental illness (SMI). METHODS: We identified patients with SMI among all those aged 25–74 registered in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink as on March 31, 2014. We compared the prevalence of CKD (two measurements of estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 for ≄3 months) and renal replacement therapy between patients with and without SMI. For patients with and without a history of lithium prescription separately, we used logistic regression to examine the association between SMI and CKD, adjusting for demographics, lifestyle characteristics, and known CKD risk factors. RESULTS: The CKD prevalence was 14.6% among patients with SMI and a history of lithium prescription (n = 4,295), 3.3% among patients with SMI and no history of lithium prescription (n = 24,101), and 2.1% among patients without SMI (n = 2,387,988; P < 0.001). The prevalence of renal replacement therapy was 0.23%, 0.15%, and 0.11%, respectively (P = 0.012). Compared to patients without SMI, the fully adjusted odds ratio for CKD was 6.49 (95% CI 5.84–7.21) for patients with SMI and a history of lithium prescription and 1.45 (95% CI 1.34–1.58) for patients with SMI and no history of lithium prescription. The higher prevalence of CKD in patients with SMI may, in part, be explained by more frequent blood testing as compared to the general population. CONCLUSION: CKD is identified more commonly among patients with SMI than in the general population

    Surface energy and stability of stress-driven discommensurate surface structures

    A method is presented to obtain {\it ab initio} upper and lower bounds to surface energies of stress-driven discommensurate surface structures, possibly non-periodic or exhibiting very large unit cells. The instability of the stressed, commensurate parent of the discommensurate structure sets an upper bound to its surface energy; a lower bound is defined by the surface energy of an ideally commensurate but laterally strained hypothetical surface system. The surface energies of the phases of the Si(111):Ga and Ge(111):Ga systems and the energies of the discommensurations are determined within ±0.2\pm 0.2 eV.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX. 2 Figures not included.     Isolation of digital dermatitis treponemes from hoof lesions in wild North American elk (Cervus elaphus) in Washington State, USA

    Since 2008, a large increase in the numbers of cases of lameness have been seen in wild North American elk (Cervus elaphus) from Washington State, USA. The most recent cases manifested as foot lesions similar both clinically and pathologically to those seen in digital dermatitis (DD) in cattle and sheep, a disease with a bacterial etiopathogenesis. To determine whether the same bacteria considered responsible for DD are associated with elk lameness, lesion samples were subjected to bacterial isolation studies and PCR assays for three phylogroups of relevant DD treponemes. The DD treponemes were isolated from lesional tissues but not from control feet or other areas of the diseased foot (including the coronary band or interdigital space), suggesting that the bacteria are strongly associated with DD lesions and may therefore be causal. In addition, PCR analysis revealed that all three unique DD treponeme phylotypes were found in elk hoof disease, and in 23 of samples, all 3 DD-associated treponemes were present in lesions. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that the elk lesion treponemes were phylogenetically almost identical to those isolated from cattle and sheep DD lesions. The isolates were particularly similar to two of the three culturable DD treponeme phylotypes: specifically, the Treponema medium/Treponema vincentii-like and Treponema phagedenis-like DD spirochetes. The third treponeme culturable phylogroup (Treponema pedis), although detected by PCR, was not isolated. This is the first report describing isolation of DD treponemes from a wildlife host, suggesting that the disease may be evolving to include a wider spectrum of cloven-hoofed animals.
