    Properties of the inner penumbral boundary and temporal evolution of a decaying sunspot

    It was empirically determined that the umbra-penumbra boundaries of stable sunspots are characterized by a constant value of the vertical magnetic field. We analyzed the evolution of the photospheric magnetic field properties of a decaying sunspot belonging to NOAA 11277 between August 28 - September 3, 2011. The observations were acquired with the spectropolarimeter on-board of the Hinode satellite. We aim to proof the validity of the constant vertical magnetic-field boundary between the umbra and penumbra in decaying sunspots. A spectral-line inversion technique was used to infer the magnetic field vector from the full-Stokes profiles. In total, eight maps were inverted and the variation of the magnetic properties in time were quantified using linear or quadratic fits. We found a linear decay of the umbral vertical magnetic field, magnetic flux, and area. The penumbra showed a linear increase of the vertical magnetic field and a sharp decay of the magnetic flux. In addition, the penumbral area quadratically decayed. The vertical component of the magnetic field is weaker on the umbra-penumbra boundary of the studied decaying sunspot compared to stable sunspots. Its value seem to be steadily decreasing during the decay phase. Moreover, at any time of the shown sunspot decay, the inner penumbra boundary does not match with a constant value of the vertical magnetic field, contrary to what was seen in stable sunspots. During the decaying phase of the studied sunspot, the umbra does not have a sufficiently strong vertical component of the magnetic field and is thus unstable and prone to be disintegrated by convection or magnetic diffusion.     Temporal evolution of arch filaments as seen in He I 10830 \r{A}

    We study the evolution of an arch filament system (AFS) and of its individual arch filaments to learn about the processes occurring in them. We observed the AFS at the GREGOR solar telescope on Tenerife at high cadence with the very fast spectroscopic mode of the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS) in the He I 10830 \AA\ spectral range. The He I triplet profiles were fitted with analytic functions to infer line-of-sight (LOS) velocities to follow plasma motions within the AFS. We tracked the temporal evolution of an individual arch filament over its entire lifetime, as seen in the He I 10830 \AA\ triplet. The arch filament expanded in height and extended in length from 13" to 21". The lifetime of this arch filament is about 30 min. About 11 min after the arch filament is seen in He I, the loop top starts to rise with an average Doppler velocity of 6 km/s. Only two minutes later, plasma drains down with supersonic velocities towards the footpoints reaching a peak velocity of up to 40 km/s in the chromosphere. The temporal evolution of He I 10830 \AA\ profiles near the leading pore showed almost ubiquitous dual red components of the He I triplet, indicating strong downflows, along with material nearly at rest within the same resolution element during the whole observing time. We followed the arch filament as it carried plasma during its rise from the photosphere to the corona. The material then drained toward the photosphere, reaching supersonic velocities, along the legs of the arch filament.     Estimación de parámetros genéticos para características productivas y reproductivas en los sistemas doble propósito del trópico bajo colombiano

    Con el objetivo de estimar los componentes de varianza, las heredabilidades, repetibilidades y correlaciones genéticas y fenotípicas para la producción de leche por lactancia (PL), el peso al destete (PD), el intervalo entre partos (IEP) y el Índice de Vaca (IV), de las hembras bovinas manejadas en los sistemas de producción de doble propósito del trópico bajo colombiano, se analizaron los registros productivos y reproductivos de 1.687 vacas registradas en la Asociación Colombiana de Criadores de Ganado en Doble Propósito (Asodoble), durante el periodo comprendido entre 1998 y 2007. Se empleó un modelo animal mixto que incluyó los efectos fijos del grupo contemporáneo (finca-sexo-época-año), la composición racial, y la duración de la lactancia como covariable; así como los efectos genéticos aleatorios del animal, el medio ambiente permanente y el residual. Las heredabilidades estimadas para IEP (0,04) y PD (0,11) fueron bajas, y moderadas para PL (0,35) e IV (0,24), respectivamente. La repetibilidad estimada para IEP fue baja (0,08), y para PL (0,41) e IV (0,31) moderada; en el caso de PD este valor fue igual a la heredabilidad (0,11). Las correlaciones genéticas y fenotípicas obtenidas entre PL y PD con respecto a IEP fueron positivas, y se determinó una asociación genética negativa entre PL y PD. Los resultados demostraron que el IV es un buen indicador, desde el punto de vista genético, de la eficiencia productiva y reproductiva de los animales manejados en estos sistemas productivos

    Cu nanoparticle-loaded nanovesicles with antibiofilm properties. Part i: Synthesis of new hybrid nanostructures

    Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) stabilized by quaternary ammonium salts are well known as antimicrobial agents. The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of the inclusion of CuNPs in nanovesicular systems. Liposomes are nanovesicles (NVs) made with phospholipids and are traditionally used as delivery vehicles because phospholipids favor cellular uptake. Their capacity for hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance and carrier capacity could be advantageous to prepare novel hybrid nanostructures based on metal NPs (Me-NPs). In this work, NVs were loaded with CuNPs, which have been reported to have a biofilm inhibition effect. These hybrid materials could improve the effect of conventional antibacterial agents. CuNPs were electro-synthesized by the sacrificial anode electrolysis technique in organic media and characterized in terms of morphology through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The NVs were prepared by the thin film hydration method in aqueous media, using phosphatidylcholine (PC) and cholesterol as a membrane stabilizer. The nanohybrid systems were purified to remove non-encapsulated NPs. The size distribution, morphology and stability of the NV systems were studied. Different quaternary ammonium salts in vesicular systems made of PC were tested as stabilizing surfactants for the synthesis and inclusion of CuNPs. The entrapment of charged metal NPs was demonstrated. NPs attached preferably to the membrane, probably due to the attraction of their hydrophobic shell to the phospholipid bilayers. The high affinity between benzyl-dimethyl-hexadecyl-ammonium chloride (BDHAC) and PC allowed us to obtain stable hybrid NVs c.a. 700 nm in diameter. The stability of liposomes increased with NP loading, suggesting a charge-stabilization effect in a novel antibiofilm nanohybrid material

    Clasificación climática de los bosques de Abies pinsapo en el sur de España

    Understanding the current distribution of vegetation and its interaction with climate regularity is important for predicting its future change. 35 weather stations with monthly resolutions have been reconstructed using GENPT software to study the pinsapo fir forest climate types. Ten climate variables have been used to describe the particular climate of A. pinsapo forests following the Climatic System of Allué (1990). A climate examination suggests that pinsapo fir forests might be established in a particular climate, which seems to be unique in the Iberian Peninsula, though the species also grows under other climates. A multivariable analysis has been done, providing five classes of pinsapo fir forests sharing some climate features: Atlantic, Mediterranean, warm, continental and cold. Results are biogeographically consistent and may help to explain plant biogeography in this region. Preservation efforts in pinsapo fir forests should be concentrated on the distribution areas with the highest risk of the climate change impact.Los estudios de distribución actual de la vegetación, en un contexto de cambio global, son un elemento importante para predecir los posibles cambios futuros. En este trabajo, a partir de 35 estaciones meteorológicas, se realizó la reconstrucción de los tipos climáticos para el pinsapo, utilizando 10 variables del Sistema Fitoclimatico de Allué (1990). Los resultados sugieren la existencia de un clima específico para la distribución del pinsapo, que parece ser único en la península ibérica, aunque la especie también esta presente en otros fitoclimas. A partir de un análisis multivariable se han identificado cinco clases fitoclimáticas con presencia de pinsapo: atlántico, mediterráneo, templado, continental y frío. Los resultados son biogeográficamente consistentes y pueden ayudar a explicar la biogeografía de su área de distribución. Los programas de conservación del pinsapo deberían utilizar información fitoclimática para definir las zonas prioritarias de protección frente a los posibles efectos del cambio climático
