Is π-Single Bonding (C–π–C) Possible? A Challenge in Organic Chemistry.
Conferencia científicaChemical bonding systems determine the nature of molecules. In organic chemistry, there are two bonding types for carbon–carbon connections: σ-bonding and π-bonding. In this presentation, several aspects of studies in the last two decades addressing a naive question “Is π-single bonding (C–π–C) possible?” will be presented: (1) features of π-single bonded species; (2) molecular design for π-single bonding; (3) generation and detection of singlet diradicaloids with a π-single bonding character; (4) future prospects of π-single bonded species.Vucerrectorado de Investigación de la Uma

The Structure of Interregional Migration in Japanese Regions : An Application of Multidimensional Scaling
Multidimensional scaling (MDS) has been used in a wide variety of research fields; psychology, political science, anthropology, marketing research, urban and regional planning, and so on. In practical terms, MDS is a statistical method to make a picture of the information in the data. It enables us to examine the "hidden structure" of a set of data. When the set of data is large, MDS is extremely useful, since it is easier and more informative to look at a picture than the data themselves. In this paper, MDS is applied to the interregional migration data of Japanese regions for the years 1960-85. Findings show that the two-dimensional configuration of regions estimated by MDS generally corresponds with the geographical locations of regions, and the structure of interregional migration was very stable over the study years 1960-85. It is also suggested that MDS is a useful tool to identify the relationships between regions using the spatial interaction data
Synthesis and photochemical reactivity of caged glutamates with a π-extended coumarin chromophore as a photolabile protecting group
International audience'Caging' and 'uncaging' bioactive substrates are key techniques in studying a wide variety of biological processes. In the present study, two-types of novel caged glutamates with a two-photon absorption (TPA) core, that is, π-extended coumarin, were synthesized and their photochemical release of glutamate was analyzed. The high yields of glutamate (>92%) were observed in the photolysis of compounds 1 and 10, respectively

Mechanical Properties of Mo and TZM Alloy Neutron-Irradiated at High Temperatures
This work reports the mechanical properties of irradiated molybdenum (Mo) and its alloy, TZM. Recrystallized and stress-relieved specimens were irradiated at five temperatures between 373 and 800℃ in FFTF/MOTA to fluence levels of 6.8 to 34 dpa. Irradiation embrittlement and hardening were evaluated by three-point bend test and Vickers hardness test, respectively. Stress-relieved materials showed the enough ductility even after high fluence irradiation. The role of layered structure of stress-relieved specimen was discussed
Curve Effect on Singlet Diradical Contribution in Kekulé-type Diradicals: A Sensitive Probe for Quinoidal Structure in Curved π-Conjugated Molecules
Curved (non-planar) aromatic compounds have attracted significant research attention in the fields of basic chemistry and materials science. The contribution of the quinoidal structure in the curved π-conjugated structures has been proposed to be the key for materials functions. In this study, the curve effect on the quinoidal contribution was investigated in Kekulé-type singlet diradicals (S-DR1-4) as a sensitive probe for quinoidal structures in curved π-conjugated molecules. The quinoidal contribution in S-DR1-4 was found to increase with increasing the curvature of the curved structure, which was quantitatively analyzed using NBO analysis and the natural orbital occupation numbers computed by the CASSCF method. The curve effect on the singlet-triplet energy gap was examined by the CASPT2 method. The singlet-triplet energy gaps for the highly π-conjugated diradicals were determined for the first time using the CASPT2 method. Substantial quinoidal contribution was found in the curved structures of the delocalized singlet diradicals S-DR1-4, in contrast to its absence in the corresponding triplet states T-DR1-4
