Degeneracy of Landau Level and Quantum Group SL_q(2)
We show that there is a kind of quantum group symmetry in the
usual Landau problem and it is this quantum group symmetry that governs the
degeneracy of Landau levels. We find that under the periodic boundary
condition, the degree of degeneracy of Landau levels is finite, and it just
equals the dimension of the irreducible cyclic representation of the quantum

Distributed Opportunistic Scheduling for MIMO Ad-Hoc Networks
Distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) protocols are proposed for
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ad-hoc networks with contention-based
medium access. The proposed scheduling protocols distinguish themselves from
other existing works by their explicit design for system throughput improvement
through exploiting spatial multiplexing and diversity in a {\em distributed}
manner. As a result, multiple links can be scheduled to simultaneously transmit
over the spatial channels formed by transmit/receiver antennas. Taking into
account the tradeoff between feedback requirements and system throughput, we
propose and compare protocols with different levels of feedback information.
Furthermore, in contrast to the conventional random access protocols that
ignore the physical channel conditions of contending links, the proposed
protocols implement a pure threshold policy derived from optimal stopping
theory, i.e. only links with threshold-exceeding channel conditions are allowed
for data transmission. Simulation results confirm that the proposed protocols
can achieve impressive throughput performance by exploiting spatial

Distributed Opportunistic Scheduling For Ad-Hoc Communications Under Noisy Channel Estimation
Distributed opportunistic scheduling is studied for wireless ad-hoc networks,
where many links contend for one channel using random access. In such networks,
distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) involves a process of joint channel
probing and distributed scheduling. It has been shown that under perfect
channel estimation, the optimal DOS for maximizing the network throughput is a
pure threshold policy. In this paper, this formalism is generalized to explore
DOS under noisy channel estimation, where the transmission rate needs to be
backed off from the estimated rate to reduce the outage. It is shown that the
optimal scheduling policy remains to be threshold-based, and that the rate
threshold turns out to be a function of the variance of the estimation error
and be a functional of the backoff rate function. Since the optimal backoff
rate is intractable, a suboptimal linear backoff scheme that backs off the
estimated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and hence the rate is proposed. The
corresponding optimal backoff ratio and rate threshold can be obtained via an
iterative algorithm. Finally, simulation results are provided to illustrate the
tradeoff caused by increasing training time to improve channel estimation at

Evidence for high dispersal ability and mito-nuclear discordance in the small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus
Understanding dispersal ability in pest species is critical for both theoretical aspects of evolutionary and population biology and from a practical standpoint, such as implementing effective forecasting systems. The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus (Falle´n), is an economically important pest, but few data exist on its dispersal ability. Here, we used mitochondrial and nuclear markers to elucidate the population genetic structure of SBPH and of the parasitic bacterium Wolbachia throughout temperate and subtropical China. Our results showed that the SBPH populations in China lack significant differences in genetic structure, suggesting extensive gene flow. Multilocus sequence typing revealed that Wolbachia infection was systematic and due to the same strain (wStri) within and across populations. However, the mtDNA haplogroups had a nonrandom distribution across the sampling localities, which correlated to latitudinal and climatic gradients. Characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted from different cooking activities in China
Nineteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM2.5 emitted from five different cooking activities were characterized, and their influencing factors were determined. The total quantified particle-bounded PAH concentrations (Sigma PAHs) in the airs from the cooking activities were 4.2-36.5-fold higher than those in corresponding backgrounds. The highest I PAHs pound were seen in cafeteria frying (783 +/- 499 ng/m(3)), followed by meat roasting (420 +/- 191 ng/m(3)), fish roasting (210 +/- 105 ng/m(3)), snack-street boiling (202 +/- 230 ng/m(3)), and cafeteria boiling (150 +/- 65 ng/m(3)). The main influencing factors on the PAH emissions were cooking methods, fat contents in raw materials, and oil consumptions. Four- to six-ringed PAHs had the highest contributions to the Sigma PAHs (avg. 87.5%). Diagnostic ratios of individual PAH were similar between the two charbroiling and other three conventional Chinese cooking methods, respectively, demonstrating the dominance of cooking methods in the PAH emissions. Remarkably high benzo(b)fluoranthene/benzo(k)fluoranthene (BbF/BkF) ratio (8.31) was seen in the snack-street boiling, attributed to the coal combustion as cooking fuel. Both fluoranthene/(fluoranthene + pyrene) [FLT/(FLT + PYR)] and benzo(a)anthracene/(benzo(a)anthracene + chrysene) [BaA/(BaA + CHR)] ratios were higher for the oil-based cooking than those from the water-based ones. In addition, two ratios of indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene/(indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene + benzo(g,h,i)perylene) [IPY/(IPY + BPE)] and benzo(a)pyrene/(benzo(a)pyrene + benzo(g,h,i)perylene) [BaP/(BaP + BPE)] were higher for two charbroiling than the three conventional Chinese cooking methods. The characterization work in this study is particularly important since cooking is a potential contributor of atmospheric PAHs in urban China. Carcinogenic potencies of PAHs were assessed by comparison with the air quality guideline and health risk estimation. The BaP and BaP equivalent were higher for the oil-based than the water-based cooking activities
Gut microbiota-derived endotoxin enhanced the incidence of cardia bifida during cardiogenesis
Background: Cytotoxicity and inflammation-associated toxic responses could be induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in vitro and in vivo respectively. However, the mechanism involved in LPS-induced cardiac malformation in prenatal fetus is still unknown. Methods and results: In this study, we demonstrated that LPS was induced in gut microbiota imbalance mice, and next, LPS exposure during gastrulation in the chick embryo increased the incidence of cardia bifida. Gene transfection and tissue transplantation trajectory indicated that LPS exposure restricted the cell migration of cardiac progenitors to primary heart field in gastrula chick embryos. In vitro explant allograft of GFP-labeled anterior primitive streak demonstrated that LPS treatments could inhibit cell migration. A similar observation was also obtained from the cell migration assay of scratch wounds using primary culture of cardiomyocytes or H9c2 cells. In the embryos exposed to LPS, expressions of Nkx2.5 and GATA5 were disturbed. These genes are associated with cardiomyocyte differentiation when heart tube fusion occurs. Furthermore, pHIS3, C-caspase3 immunohistological staining indicated that cell proliferation decreased, cell apoptosis increased in the heart tube of chick embryo. Meanwhile, in vivo, pHIS3 immunohistological staining and Hochest/PI staining also draw the similar conclusions. The LPS exposure also caused the production of excess ROS, which might damage the cardiac precursor cells of developing embryos. At last, we showed that LPS-induced cardia bifida could be partially rescued through the addition of antioxidants. Conclusions: Together, these results reveal that excess ROS generation is involved in the LPS-induced defects in heart tube during chick embryo development. This article is protected by copyright.
