Critical Pedagogical Approaches to Visual Culture in Turkish Preservice Education

    No full text
This study discusses how challenges, rationales, and possibilities of practices and theories might be translated into the socio-cultural and educational situation in Turkey’s art teacher preparation programs. The current study focuses particularly on critical pedagogies for the study of visual culture inspired by a study of Visual Art Teacher Education at a large research university in the eastern United States. In transforming the teaching methodology from one institutional system to another, one must contextualize curriculum to another sociopolitical educational site. The article concludes with recommendations to systematically include visual culture education at all levels of curriculum in Turkey. © 2015, © 2015 by National Art Education Association. In recent years, there has been an increasing use of qualitative designs in social sciences. Visual art teaching is also being affected from this approach that focuses on qualitative and subjective aspects of artistic learning. The purpose of this study is to exemplify the importance of portfolio documents for qualitative researchers within the framework of transformation in visual arts education methodology. In this context, portfolios which are used as an assessment tool in education of arts have been evaluated as documents that provide data for qualitative researches. Moreover, depending on researchers' comments that are obtained from sample and content analysis, it is tries to provide a general point of view. These researchers have used portfolios to gather qualitative data

Current developments in education emphasize that assessment process should not be independent from the instruction process. In contrast, assessments have to reflect and be a part of the education-instruction activities. Solely, when examining the implementations of assessment and evaluation in visual arts education, it seems that the students are evaluated substantially with the products they produced. The production of artistic works is one of the important aims of visual arts education. However, it is required that the goals of art education and values gained in the process should not be overshadowed. In this frame, portfolio, which has a feature of being used as a performance assessment approach and representing the development of the student during the learning process, can be an alternative to these limits. The purpose of this study is to present a theoretical perspective about portfolio assessment technique. Portfolio assessment approach is mentioned within the framework of art education considering the difficulties in the assessment process of student’s artistic improvement. In this research, specialty, content, application and evaluation of portfolio assessment technique have been evaluated. In this way, it has been thought that this article would be able to provide a new perspective to the art educators about determining real learning ways and shortcomings

The objective of this research is to evaluate the process and school applicability of teacher training program designed and applied on Visual Culture Theory in visual arts courses in line with opinions of project participant teachers. In this research, we used the "holistic multi-stage" sampling since we examined visual culture studies in visual arts courses in line with the opinions of classroom teachers and visual arts teachers. The study group in this research consisted of a total of 508 teachers who participated in the teacher training workshop organized under TUBITAK 4005 Science and Society Innovative Education Practices. We collected data using participant diaries and focus group interviews. The data were analyzed by content analysis and presented under five main themes formed by visual culture theory; "Learning Experiences", "Inquiries", "Concerns", "Needs" and "New Ideas for Learning and Teaching". Suggestions were presented on extending pre-service and in-service training programs to teach new approaches such as visual culture theory in art education and on increasing number of practices involving student-teacher and parent interaction taking such approaches in the scope of lifelong learning.C1 [Ozsoy, Vedat] TOBB Univ, Fac Architecture & Design, Ankara, Turkey.[Mamur, Nuray] Pamukkale Univ, Fac Educ, Denizli, Turkey.[Saribas, Sevcan] Anadolu Univ, Fac Educ, Eskisehir, Turkey

    Approach in Visual Art Education

In recent years, in visual arts education, there has been a tendency towards teaching methods that expand learning beyond the school's walls, based on real world experiences, and that enable the students to develop meaningful relationships with cultural, political, and social issues. Among these trends, the practices in which the problems are found and solved by the students themselves rather than trying to find the right answers to the questions posed by the teacher in the classroom, where the circumstances that are usually neglected in socio-cultural life have been revealed. This research focuses on improving the prospective visual arts teachers' urban awareness and identity via a teaching activity designed through Project based learning methods. The research has been designed as an action research. Participants of the research were 40 students enrolled in Anadolu University, Faculty of Education, Department of Art Teaching, and took "Special Teaching Methods II" course. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with the students, reflective daily reports, and the artworks the students created at the end of this process, and their reports written on these works during the 5 (five)-week implementation process. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data obtained from the research implementation process. In this research, the prospective teachers were encouraged to have a human-environment- and city-oriented mindset at each stage of this learning process, which began with analysis of urban perceptions and extended towards the artistic fiction in that space. The prospective teachers stated that the project-based learning approach has made a great contribution to their awareness for experiencing the real world and preserving what belongs to urban memory. The prospective teachers not only focused on the aspects that address to morphological aesthetics of their artworks, they also focused on their connection with the society and space, and even with the past

The effect of ambient temperature on electric power generation in natural gas combined cycle power plant—A case study

    No full text
Natural gas combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) are widely used to meet peak loads in electric energy production. Continuous monitoring of the output electrical power of CCPPs is a requirement for power performance. In this study, the role of ambient temperature change having the greatest effect on electric production is experimentally investigated for a natural gas CCPP. The plant has generated electricity for fourteen years and setup at 240 MW in Aliağa, İzmir, Turkey. Depending on the seasonal temperature changes, the study data were obtained from each gas turbine (GT), steam turbine (ST) and combined cycle blocks (CCBs) in the ambient temperature range of 8–23 °C. In electric energy production, an important decrease was in the GTs because of the temperature increase. This decrease indirectly affected the electric energy production of the STs. As a result, the efficiency of each GT, ST and CCB decreased, although the quantity of fuel consumed by the controllers in the plant was reduced. As a result of this data, it has been recommended and applied that additional precautions have been taken in the power plant to bring the air entering the combustion chamber to ideal conditions and necessary air cooling systems have been installed. © 2018 The Author
