The Islamization of the Malay worldview: a cultural transformation

    Get PDF
The Malay history has been well-documented and much has been written about it by many authors either by the Malays or by the non-Malays as well as the Orientalists. They wrote on various genres of literature, culture and other aspects of the Malays. Some of their findings and conclusions are acceptable. But for some others, because of their adoption of various Western social theories, their application to the study of the Malay society yield untenable results. Syed MuÍammad Naquib al-Attas in his influential works such as the Preliminary Statement on a General Theory of the Islamization of the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago, has argued that some of the theories and elaborations particularly by the Orientalists pertaining to Islam and the Islamization of the Malay Archipelago cannot be considered as having achieved the scientific rank of theory, or even in some cases that of hypothesis. As argued by him, the coming of Islam was the most momentous event for the Malays. It constitutes a new period in their history. The process of Islamization generally refers to the process that brought about the phenomenon of historical and cultural impact of Islam upon the Malay world which revolutionized its vision of reality and existence into distinctive Islamic worldview

Improving the cuttings transport performance of water-based mud through the use of polypropylene beads

    Get PDF
This research work presents the experimental results of the effect of polypropylene beads’ concentrations in water-based mud on wellbore cleaning. A comparative study of cuttings transport performance (CTP) of water-based mud and water-based mud with polypropylene beads were carried out at different hole angles of 0°, 30°, 60°. 75° and 90° in a 13 ft (3.96 m) acrylic concentric annulus flow test section, having a 2 in (50.8 mm) casing ID and a fixed 0.79 in (20 mm) inner pipe OD. A total of 100 runs had been accomplished using fine sands (from Tanjung Balau, Johor Bahru, Malaysia), of size ranging from 5/127 - 6/127" (1.0 – 1.2 mm) and density 2.4 g/cc (2400 kg/m3), with the mud density and viscosity maintained at 9 ppg (1078 kg/m3) and 5 cp (0.005 Pa.s), respectively, in a flow velocity of 2.1 ft/s (0.64 m/s). Polypropylene beads used in this study have the following properties: 290 kg/cm2 of tensile strength at yield, 0.86 g/cc (860 kg/m3) density, 4 mm (20/127") size, 82 R scale Rockwell hardness, 13,500 kg/cm2 flexural modulus, 85°C heat deflection temperature at 4.6 kg/cm2, 4 g/10 min melt flow rate at 230°C and spherical in shape. The experimental findings showed that commingling the basic mud with polypropylene beads has successfully introduced a buoyant force which was found to have improved the cuttings transport performance by more than 10% when weight concentration of the polypropylene beads was increased to 1.5% as compared with the performance obtained from the basic water-based mud. The improvement of cuttings transport performance was found to be more significant in a vertical hole

AbstractThis paper concludes philosophical elements regarding conceptual theory and significances of human attitude towards the environment. In a sustainable life, environmental management becomes the most crucial area to be concerned. There are many campaigns, courses and even legal enforcement to ensure the success of educating attitude towards environment. This could be more effective and eternal effects, if the understanding of environmental attitude would be based on religious teachings and philosophy. This paper guides the dos and don’ts and positive or negative behavior towards environmental entities, including metaphysical entities, as mentioned in the muslim's Holy book and prophet's traditions

Research culture among academics at higher education institutions: a case study at the International Islamic University Malaysia

    Get PDF
Academic research has been converted into a basic element of the mission of universities, through which they contribute to the success of regional, economic, cultural and educational development plans. Thus, the success of a university today is likely being measured through the number of research, publications and intellectual properties produced by academic staff. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate the existence of research culture at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and examines academic staff perceptions toward it. It employed a survey method to gather the data. A survey was administered to a sample of academic staff at all Kulliyyahs (Faculties), Institutes and Centers at IIUM. A number of 411 academic staff participated as respondents in this study. A set of questionnaire consisting of 39 items was constructed to examine the research culture at IIUM. Where as a simple descriptive statistical analysis which includes percentages, frequencies and means was used for data analysis. The outcomes of this research are that tangible practical implications have emerged from the data analysis and the discussions. It is evident that academics are prepared to practice the research culture at IIUM, as well as their dispositions to engage in intellectual discourse. The academic staff are aware of the importance of research, the procedure of conducting research and that they believe that by doing research, their teaching competencies can be further improve

Karyotype of Malayan Gaur (Bos gaurus hubbacki) , Sahiwal-Fresien cattle and Gaur x cattle hybrids backcrosses.

Interspecific hybridization has been reported for a wide variety of vertebrate species either spontaneous or by organized crossing of bovine species. The hybrids were often carrying intermediate characters genetically and phenotypically of the parents. Thus, status information of both aspects is valuable in animal production for selection and breeding management. The Gaur-cattle hybrids was reported to be superior in production value compared to their parent cattle but fertility status was still questionable. The project was abandoned due to their fertility issue and the hybrids were kept within the cattle in a dairy farm. Cytogenetic status and breeding record of the remaining herd were unavailable since then. The herd was then translocated to a deer farm (PTH Lenggong) and kept freely in the paddock. Recently, two female calves were born via inter se mating. Peripheral blood cultures of Malayan Gaur, Sahiwal-Friesian cattle and Gaur x cattle hybrid backcrosses were analyzed via Giemsa stained metaphase. The Gaur and cattle were having diploid chromosome number (2n) of 56 and 60, respectively. Interestingly, the backcrosses from the hybrids by cattle bulls were found to have two chromosome arrangements, which are 2n = 58 and 2n = 60
