Inefficient design: Sensitivity analysis and numerical investigation of load cases from EN 12663-1 on railway car bodies
Railway car bodies for passenger trains in Europe are designed according to EN 12663-1 but the load assumptions contradict the goals of designing light and energyefficient car bodies. Hence a sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the influence of the load cases of EN 12663-1 on the overall vehicle structure to identify the relevant loads. The load cases of EN 12663-1 are examined for their sensitivity to the system response with the help of design of experiments. As an essential parameter for the design of railway car bodies the weight force is identified. The longitudinal force at the buffer level is described as a dimensioning load if it is applied at the
maximum level. However, an operating situation with this load magnitude is not known. Furthermore, load cases are uncovered that are not relevant for future designs due to their redundancy with other load cases. Over-dimensioning can be assumed as a result
Methodical development of a lightweight car body for a high-speed train
The reduction of the mass is one of the major keys in order to increase the energy efficiency of railway vehicles. As the car body represents by far the greatest per cent by weight of a single component of a railway vehicle a weight reduction of this vehicle offers a large potential to reduce an overall mass. Therefore, both in Japan and Europe greats efforts are made to develop systematic approaches to reduce the car body mass. This topic is in different peculiarities reflected by research conducted by the Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) of Japan and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). To complement each other works these two research institutions joined forces in order to develop a systematic approach to reduce the mass of car bodies, which is applicable both in Japan and Europe. The dimensioning and of a railway car body depends strongly on the applied load cases. These loads cases are defined in the correspondent standard. In Japan this standard is represented by the JIS E 7106, in Europe by the EN 12663-1. As there exist different standards in Japan and Europe the first step of the collaboration between RTRI and DLR was a comparison of the two standards. A first comparison showed that both standards are following the same basic approach. In both standards dynamics loads occurring during the whole life-cycle are represented by static equivalent loads. In the next step topology optimization, based on both standards were conducted. The results showed almost identic load paths, unless which standard has been applied. Based on this result it can be concluded that a systematic lightweight approach developed for JIS E7106 standard can also be used with the EN 12663-1 and vice versa
Model-Based Systems Engineering for the Design of an Intermodal High-Speed Freight Train Terminal
Since rail traffic is the mode of mass transport with minimal transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, it plays a key role in achieving the sustainability targets of the transportation sector. To enable a modal shift from road to rail the German Aerospace Center has developed the Next Generation Train CARGO, a high-speed freight train concept targeted to ship so-called Low-Density High Value goods on existing railway infrastructure. Studies have revealed that an intermodal transshipment terminal is key to a successful integration of the concept in current logistics networks. Driven by high requirements regarding handling, reliability, and time, the terminal is a complex intralogistics system strongly depending on the particular good that shall be handled. This work uses the principles and methods of Model-Based Systems Engineering in a tailored modeling approach to specify a generic terminal system architecture. Based on this generic architecture an exemplary good-specific variant of the terminal is derived with focus on intralogistics freight handling. The chosen design approach is further evaluated regarding its suitability in context of intralogistics system design. The results of this work demonstrate that Model-Based Systems Engineering is capable of successfully guiding architecture specification in the novel application domain of complex intralogistics facilities and further contributes to a consistent and comprehensive terminal design
Lightweight design concept methodology of the Extended Market Wagon: A Shift2Rail project
The Extended Market Wagon (EMW) presented in this study is a design concept developed within the FR8RAIL- 4 project, which is part of the Shift2Rail IP-5 program. FR8RAIL-4 focuses on increasing the efficiency of rail freight transportation by employing new technologies and strategies such as new lightweight wagon designs, novel running gear, wagon intelligence and wagon automation in order to deliver goods safely, reliably and costefficiently. The challenges addressed in this research primarily relate to the conceptualization and design of a robust yet lightweight innovative wagon structure that can be implemented using conventional manufacturing methods. This lightweight design must be achieved while balancing the above goals with the necessity for simplicity and low life-cycle-costs.
A further goal of the study is to demonstrate the use of the described methods and design in the course of dramatically shortened design cycles and in flexible response to changing requirements. The Extended Market Wagon (EMW) is one of the demonstration parts of the FR8RAIL-4 project which addresses technical solutions for these requirements and also challenges. Therefore, the results of the study are to be applied as a technical1:1 scale demonstrator, in accordance with the EU Annual Work Plan 2020. I It will be tested on track under real world conditions

NGT CARGO - A market-driven concept for more sustainable freight transport on rail
Greenhouse gas emissions from the freight transportation sector must be significantly reduced in line with the
European Union’s commitments. Shifting freight transportation from carbon-intensive modes such as air and
road to more environmentally friendly modes, such as rail, can be an effective means of accomplishing this goal.
In order to compete with the flexibility, speed and price of current road transportation, rail freight needs to apply
new technologies and strategies such as automation, energy-dense batteries and virtual coupling between trains.
NGT CARGO is a high speed freight train concept, the individual cars of which are capable of independent
autonomous travel for short distances and which, as a complete train with locomotives, is capable of high speed
platooning operations together with other appropriately equipped passenger and freight trains. With this concept,
the capabilities and capacities of rail freight transportation can be expanded while maximizing the utilization of
existing infrastructure
