    System theoretic framework for assuring safety and dependability of highly integrated aero engine control systems

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 108-110).The development of complex, safety-critical systems for aero-engine control is subject to the, often competing, demands for higher safety and reduced development cost. Although the commercial aerospace industry has a general good safety record, and has placed much emphasis on process improvement within a strong safety culture, there continues to be a large number of design and requirements errors found during development and after entry into service. 'The thesis assesses current system safety practice within the aero engine control system industry, including international standards, and reviews the current practice against the research at MIT by Professor Nancy Leveson. The thesis focuses in particular on software safety as this is the area that has proven most challenging and most likely to experience high costs. The particular research topics reviewed are Intent Specifications, the System Theoretic Accident Modeling and Processes (STAMP) technique, and requirements completeness criteria. Research shows that many problems arise from requirements and design errors rather than component failures. Several example incidents from an engine company are reviewed and these show a pattern of common problems which could have been caught by the use of more comprehensive requirements completeness checks and by the use of Intent Specifications. In particular, assumptions are not currently documented in the specifications but are kept separately, and the need to identify assumptions is not emphasized enough in existing processes.(cont.) It is concluded that the existing development process has significant room for improvement in the coordination between the safety assessment and system development processes.     Pancreatic Carcinoma Masquerading as Groove Pancreatitis: Case Report and Review of Literature

    Context Groove pancreatitis is a distinct form of chronic pancreatitis affecting the space surrounded by the pancreatic head, duodenum and common bile duct. It is an uncommon pancreatic disease with challenging imaging diagnosis that can lead to surgical dilemmas. The purpose of this study is to report a case and review the current clinical, radiological and pathological characteristics of groove pancreatic carcinoma and groove pancreatitis. Case report A 58-year-old man, with a history of alcohol excess, presented with a 4 month history of upper abdominal pain associated with weight loss and vomiting. Failed duodenal dilatation led to gastroenterostomy with biopsies showing chronic inflammation. Further presentation with jaundice and pancreatic groove mass led to a Whipple’s pancreaticoduodenectomy. Histopathology report demonstrated cystic areas in both medial and lateral walls of his duodenum microscopically consistent with groove pancreatitis and a moderate to poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Conclusion Several studies have been attempted to clarify the points of differentiation between carcinoma and pancreatitis in the groove area. This discrimination has been proved to be difficult; frequently the definitive diagnosis is only obtained after surgical intervention. This condition should be considered when making the differential diagnosis in pancreatic groove pathology and duodenal stenosis

    Dynamics of Large-Scale Plastic Deformation and the Necking Instability in Amorphous Solids

    We use the shear transformation zone (STZ) theory of dynamic plasticity to study the necking instability in a two-dimensional strip of amorphous solid. Our Eulerian description of large-scale deformation allows us to follow the instability far into the nonlinear regime. We find a strong rate dependence; the higher the applied strain rate, the further the strip extends before the onset of instability. The material hardens outside the necking region, but the description of plastic flow within the neck is distinctly different from that of conventional time-independent theories of plasticity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (eps), revtex4, added references, changed and added content, resubmitted to PR

    Fluid flow due to collective non-reciprocal motion of symmetrically-beating artificial cilia

    Using a magneto-mechanical solid-fluid numerical model for permanently magnetic artificial cilia, we show that the metachronal motion of symmetrically beating cilia establishes a net pressure gradient in the direction of the metachronal wave, which creates a unidirectional flow. The flow generated is characterised as a function of the cilia spacing, the length of the metachronal wave, and a dimensionless parameter that characterises the relative importance of the viscous forces over the elastic forces in the cilia

    A critical review of sanctioned knowledge production concerning abortion in Africa: Implications for feminist health psychology

    Taking a feminist health psychology approach, we conducted a systematic review of published research on abortion featured in PsycINFO over a 7-year period. We analysed the 39 articles included in the review in terms of countries in which the research was conducted, types of research, issues covered, the way the research was framed and main findings. Despite 97per cent of abortions performed in Africa being classifiable as unsafe, there has been no engagement in knowledge production about abortion in Africa from psychologists, outside of South Africa. Given this, we outline the implications of the current knowledge base for feminism, psychology and feminist health psychology in Africa

    Reproductive justice in context: South African and Zimbabwean women’s narratives of their abortion decision

    The abortion decision-making process is embedded within overlapping power relations. Using a post-colonial feminist framework, we analyse South African and Zimbabwean women’s narratives regarding their abortion decision. As neighbouring countries, South Africa and Zimbabwe provide a useful counterpoint as they have common and differing social histories and very different abortion legislation. In our analysis, we unpick transversal commonalities and divergences in the discursive resources deployed by the women in their narratives in the two sites. Commonalities included the women feeling compelled to justify their abortion decision in the interactive interview space, an absence of a reproductive rights discourse, and the deployment of relationship embedded discourses in the justificatory work performed by the women. The ‘‘conjugalisation of reproduction’’, ‘‘imperative of good mothering’’, and ‘‘unstable partner relationships’’ discourses featured across both sites but the manner in which these were deployed differed. These discursive resources allowed the women to position themselves as making responsible decisions. The Zimbabwean women spoke of shame and hiding, a discursive resource that was explicitly absent in the South African women’s accounts. We conclude by arguing that our post-colonial feminist approach allows for a contextualised reproductive justice stance to abortion decision-making that identifies both transnational and context-specific power relations
