    A 3 Week Geriatric Education Program for 4th Year Medical Students at Dalhousie University

    Purpose -Population demographics are shifting towards an increased average age. Yet, many medical schools still do not have mandatory comprehensive education in Geriatric Medicine. In 2001, the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Dalhousie University developed a required three-week geriatric course for fourth year medical students. This paper describes the details of the curriculum so that it can be reproduced in other settings. Results - The curriculum was successfully implemented. An examination, held at the end of each 3-week rotation, documented extensive learning of important concepts in Geriatric Medicine. The students gave positive feedback about the benefits of this training program. Conclusion -A well developed formal education program teaches students specific skills in Geriatric Medicine, which may improve the care of the growing elderly populatio

    A Novel DNA Repair Disorder With Thrombocytopenia, Nephrosis, and Features Overlapping Cockayne Syndrome

    We report on four siblings with Cockayne-like syndrome with thrombocytopenia and nephrotic syndrome. The parents were healthy and consanguineous, consistent with an autosomal recessive mode of disease inheritance. UV irradiation of fibroblasts revealed an intermediate sensitivity between normal and standard Cockayne syndrome (CS) control cells. A genome-wide linkage scan conducted using Affymetrix 10K arrays provided exclusion of the known CS genes in the family, and evidence that the disease gene maps to 1p33-p31.1. Thrombocytopenia has not previously been linked with CS, but two patients with CS in association with nephrotic syndrome have previously been documented and the phenotypes are compared with the patients described here. We suggest that this Cockayne-like phenotype with thrombocytopenia and nephrotic syndrome may be a novel DNA repair disorder, and propose that further investigation of other affected families may help identify the causative genetic defect.     Personal vehicle sharing services in North America

    Over the past three decades, carsharing has grown from a collection of local grassroots organizations into a worldwide industry. Traditional carsharing, though expanding, has a limited network of vehicles and locations. The next generation of shared-use vehicle services could overcome such expansion barriers as capital costs and land use by incorporating new concepts like personal vehicle sharing.Personal vehicle sharing provides short-term access to privately-owned vehicles. As of May 2012, there were 33 personal vehicle sharing operators worldwide, with 10 active or in pilot phase, three planned, and four defunct in North America. Due to operator non-disclosure, personal vehicle sharing member numbers are currently unknown. The authors investigated personal vehicle sharing in North America by conducting 34 expert interviews. This research explores the development of personal vehicle sharing including business models, market opportunities, and service barriers to assess its early viability as a sustainable transportation mode and to provide a foundation for future research on the topic. Personal vehicle sharing has the potential to impact the transportation sector by increasing the availability and interconnectivity among modes and providing greater alternatives to vehicle ownership in more geographic locations

    The kinematics of ionized gas in lyman-break analogs at z ~ 0.2

    We present results for 19 “Lyman-break analogs” observed with Keck/OSIRIS with an adaptive-optics-assisted spatial resolution of less than 200 pc. We detect satellites/companions, diffuse emission, and velocity shear, all with high signal-to-noise ratios. These galaxies present remarkably high velocity dispersion along the line of sight (~70 km s^(−1)), much higher than standard star-forming spirals in the low-redshift universe. We artificially redshift our data to z ~ 2.2 to allow for a direct comparison with observations of high-z Lyman-break galaxies and find striking similarities between both samples. This suggests that either similar physical processes are responsible for their observed properties, or, alternatively, that it is very difficult to distinguish between different mechanisms operating in the low- versus high-redshift starburst galaxies based on the available data. The comparison between morphologies in the UV/optical continuum and our kinemetry analysis often shows that neither is by itself sufficient to confirm or completely rule out the contribution from recent merger events. We find a correlation between the kinematic properties and stellar mass, in that more massive galaxies show stronger evidence for a disk-like structure. This suggests a co-evolutionary process between the stellar mass buildup and the formation of morphological and dynamical substructure within the galaxy

    Cellular IP<sub>6</sub> Levels Limit HIV Production while Viruses that Cannot Efficiently Package IP<sub>6</sub> Are Attenuated for Infection and Replication

    Summary: HIV-1 hijacks host proteins to promote infection. Here we show that HIV is also dependent upon the host metabolite inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) for viral production and primary cell replication. HIV-1 recruits IP6 into virions using two lysine rings in its immature hexamers. Mutation of either ring inhibits IP6 packaging and reduces viral production. Loss of IP6 also results in virions with highly unstable capsids, leading to a profound loss of reverse transcription and cell infection. Replacement of one ring with a hydrophobic isoleucine core restores viral production, but IP6 incorporation and infection remain impaired, consistent with an independent role for IP6 in stable capsid assembly. Genetic knockout of biosynthetic kinases IPMK and IPPK reveals that cellular IP6 availability limits the production of diverse lentiviruses, but in the absence of IP6, HIV-1 packages IP5 without loss of infectivity. Together, these data suggest that IP6 is a critical cofactor for HIV-1 replication

    Conceptualising the geographic world: the dimensions of negotiation in crowdsourced cartography

    In crowdsourced cartographic projects, mappers coordinate their efforts through online tools to produce digital geospatial artefacts, such as maps and gazetteers, which were once the exclusive territory of professional surveyors and cartographers. In order to produce meaningful and coherent data, contributors need to negotiate a shared conceptualisation that defines the domain concepts, such as road, building, train station, forest, and lake, enabling the communi- cation of geographic knowledge. Considering the OpenStreetMap Wiki website as a case study, this article investigates the nature of this negotiation, driven by a small group of mappers in a context of high contribution inequality. De- spite the apparent consensus on the conceptualisation, the negotiation keeps unfolding in a tension between alternative representations, which are often in- commensurable, i.e., hard to integrate and reconcile. In this study, we identify six complementary dimensions of incommensurability that recur in the nego- tiation: (i) ontology, (ii) cartography, (iii) culture and language, (iv) lexical definitions, (v) granularity, and (vi) semantic overload and duplication
