    Direct observation of the oxygen isotope effect on the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth in optimally doped YBa2_2Cu3_3O7δ_{7-\delta}

    We report the first direct observation of the oxygen-isotope (16^{16}O/18^{18}O) effect on the in-plane penetration depth λab\lambda_{ab} in a nearly optimally doped YBa2_2Cu3_3O7δ_{7-\delta} film using the novel low-energy muon-spin rotation technique. Spin polarized low energy muons are implanted in the film at a known depth zz beneath the surface and precess in the local magnetic field B(z)B(z). This feature allows us to measure directly the profile B(z)B(z) of the magnetic field inside the superconducting film in the Meissner state and to make a model independent determination of λab\lambda_{ab}. A substantial isotope shift Δλab/λab=2.8(7)\Delta\lambda_{ab}/\lambda_{ab}=2.8(7)% at 4 K is observed, implying that the in-plane effective supercarrier mass mabm_{ab}^\ast is oxygen-isotope dependent with Δmab/mab=5.5(1.4)\Delta m_{ab}^\ast/m_{ab}^\ast = 5.5(1.4)%.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    A novel method to quantify IRDye800CW fluorescent antibody probes ex vivo in tissue distribution studies

    BACKGROUND: We describe a new method for biodistribution studies with IRDye800CW fluorescent antibody probes. This method allows the quantification of the IRDye800CW fluorescent tracer in percentage of injected dose per gram of tissue (% ID/g), and it is herein compared to the generally used reference method that makes use of radioactivity. METHODS: Cetuximab was conjugated to both the near-infrared fluorophore IRDye800CW and/or the positron emitter 89-zirconium, which was injected in nude mice bearing A431 human tumor xenografts. Positron emission tomography (PET) and optical imaging were performed 24 h post-injection (p.i.). For the biodistribution study, organs and tumors were collected 24 h p.i., and each of these was halved. One half was used for the determination of probe uptake by radioactivity measurement. The other half was homogenized, and the content of the fluorescent probe was determined by extrapolation from a calibration curve made with the injected probe. RESULTS: Tumors were clearly visualized with both modalities, and the calculated tumor-to-normal tissue ratios were very similar for optical and PET imaging: 3.31 ± 1.09 and 3.15 ± 0.99, respectively. Although some variations were observed in ex vivo analyses, tumor uptake was within the same range for IRDye800CW and gamma ray quantification: 15.07 ± 3.66% ID/g and 13.92 ± 2.59% ID/g, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The novel method for quantification of the optical tracer IRDye800CW gives similar results as the reference method of gamma ray quantification. This new method is considered very useful in the context of the preclinical development of IRDye800CW fluorescent probes for optical molecular imaging, likely contributing to the selection of lead compounds that are the most promising for clinical translation

    Clinical Outcome of Intra-Arterial Embolization for Treatment of Patients with Pelvic Trauma

    Purpose. To analyse the technical success of pelvic embolization in our institution and to assess periprocedural hemodynamic status and morbidity/mortality of all pelvic trauma patients who underwent pelvic embolization. Methods. A retrospective analysis of patients with a pelvic fracture due to trauma who underwent arterial embolization was performed. Clinical data, pelvic radiographs, contrast-enhanced CT-scans, and angiographic findings were reviewed. Subsequently, the technical success and peri-procedural hemodynamic status were evaluated and described. Results. 19 trauma patients with fractures of the pelvis underwent arterial embolization. Initially, 10/19 patients (53%) were hemodynamically unstable prior to embolization. Technical success of embolization was 100%. 14/19 patients (74%) were stable after embolization, and treatment success was high as 74%. Conclusion. Angiography with subsequent embolization should be performed in patients with a pelvic fracture due to trauma and hemodynamic instability, after surgical intervention or with a persistent arterial blush indicative of an active bleeding on CT

    A metal-organic framework with ultrahigh glass-forming ability

    Glass-forming ability (GFA) is the ability of a liquid to avoid crystallization during cooling. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of glass formers (1?3), with hitherto unknown dynamic and thermodynamic properties. We report the discovery of a new series of tetrahedral glass systems, zeolitic imidazolate framework?62 (ZIF-62) [Zn(Im2?xbImx)], which have ultrahigh GFA, superior to any other known glass formers. This ultrahigh GFA is evidenced by a high viscosity ? (105 Pa?s) at the melting temperature Tm, a large crystal-glass network density deficit (??/?g)network, no crystallization in supercooled region on laboratory time scales, a low fragility (m = 23), an extremely high Poisson?s ratio (? = 0.45), and the highest Tg/Tm ratio (0.84) ever reported. Tm and Tg both increase with benzimidazolate (bIm) content but retain the same ultrahigh Tg/Tm ratio, owing to high steric hindrance and frustrated network dynamics and also to the unusually low enthalpy and entropy typical of the soft and flexible nature of MOFs.     Vascular uptake on 18F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography:precursor of vascular calcification?

    Background: Microcalcifications cannot be identified with the present resolution of CT; however, 18F-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has been proposed for non-invasive identification of microcalcification. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether 18F-NaF activity can assess the presence and predict the progression of CT detectable vascular calcification. Methods and Results: The data of two longitudinal studies in which patients received a 18F-NaF PET-CT at baseline and after 6 months or 1-year follow-up were used. The target to background ratio (TBR) was measured on PET at baseline and CT calcification was quantified in the femoral arteries at baseline and follow-up. 128 patients were included. A higher TBR at baseline was associated with higher calcification mass at baseline and calcification progression (β = 1.006 [1.005-1.007] and β = 1.002 [1.002-1.003] in the studies with 6 months and 1-year follow-up, respectively). In areas without calcification at baseline and where calcification developed at follow-up, the TBR was.11–.13 (P < .001) higher compared to areas where no calcification developed. Conclusion: The activity of 18F-NaF is related to the amount of calcification and calcification progression.     Prediction of Cardiovascular Events by Using Non-Vascular Findings on Routine Chest CT

    Background: Routine computed tomography (CT) examinations contain an abundance of findings unrelated to the diagnostic question. Those with prognostic significance may contribute to early detection and treatment of disease, irrelevant findings can be ignored. We aimed to assess the association between unrequested chest CT findings in lungs, mediastinum and pleura and future cardiovascular events. Methods: Multi-center case-cohort study in 5 tertiary and 3 secondary care hospitals involving 10410 subjects who underwent routine chest CT for non-cardiovascular reasons. 493 cardiovascular hospitalizations or deaths were recorded during an average follow-up time of 17.8 months. 1191 patients were randomly sampled to serve as a control subcohort. Hazard ratios and annualized event rates were calculated. Results: Abnormalities in the lung (26–44%), pleura (14–15%) and mediastinum (20%) were common. Hazard ratios after adjustment for age and sex were for airway wall thickening 2.26 (1.59–3.22), ground glass opacities 2.50 (1.72–3.62), consolidations 1.97 (1.12–3.47), pleural effusions 2.77 (1.81–4.25) and lymph-nodes 2.04 (1.40–2.96). Corresponding annual event rates were 5.5%, 6.0%, 3.8%, 10.2 % and 4.4%. Conclusions: We have identified several common chest CT findings that are predictive for future risk of cardiovascular events and found that other findings have little utility for this.
