The serialized past: archaeology news online

Maintaining the public’s interest in the past has long been a major concern among archaeologists, and practitioners since Mortimer Wheeler have appreciated the value of reporting their finds through mass media outlets (Moshenska and Schadla-Hall 2011). While teaching the honors module Archaeology in Contemporary Society at the University of Chester in 2015, I wanted to assess the portrayal of our discipline in the news. I put together a computer lab session that collated headlines into word clouds and found some peculiarities of reporting across news sources. Yet when it came time to producing essays, few students chose to write about this subject. While there have been some great studies of archaeology in the media, they are aging fast and new work has yet to catch up with the digital world of online news

Beca CONACy

Randomized Block Adaptive Linear System Solvers

Randomized linear solvers leverage randomization to structure-blindly compress and solve a linear system to produce an inexpensive solution. While such a property is highly desirable, randomized linear solvers often suffer when it comes to performance as either (1) problem structure is not being exploited, and (2) hardware is inefficiently used. Thus, randomized adaptive solvers are starting to appear that use the benefits of randomness while attempting to still exploit problem structure and reduce hardware inefficiencies. Unfortunately, such randomized adaptive solvers are likely to be without a theoretical foundation to show that they will work (i.e., find a solution). Accordingly, here, we distill three general criteria for randomized block adaptive solvers, which, as we show, will guarantee convergence of the randomized adaptive solver and supply a worst-case rate of convergence. We will demonstrate that these results apply to existing randomized block adaptive solvers, and to several that we devise for demonstrative purposes.Comment: 43 pages, 4 figure

© 2018, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.OBJECTIVE: To assess drug susceptibility and characterize Clostridium difficile ribotypes in isolates from two tertiary-care hospitals in Mexico. METHODS: Isolates were evaluated for genotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and detection of mutations associated with drug resistance. PCR ribotyping was performed using a combination of gel-based and capillary electrophoresis-based approaches. RESULTS: MIC50 and MIC90 were ≥128 mg/L for ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, clindamycin, and rifampicin. There was no reduced susceptibility to metronidazole or tetracycline; however, reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (≥4 mg/L) and fidaxomicin (≥2 mg/L) was detected in 50 (40.3%) and 4 (3.2%) isolates, respectively. Furthermore, the rpoB Arg505Lys mutation was more frequently detected in isolates with high minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to rifampicin (≥32 mg/L) (OR = 52.5; 95% CI = 5.17-532.6; p < 0.000). Of the 124 C. difficile isolates recovered, 84 (66.7%) were of ribotype 027, 18 (14.5%) of ribotype 001, and the remainder were other ribotypes (353, 255, 220, 208, 176, 106, 076, 020, 019, 017, 014, 012, 003, and 002). CONCLUSION: Ribotypes 027 and 001 were the most frequent C. difficile isolates recovered in this study, and demonstrated higher MICs. Furthermore, we found four isolates with reduced susceptibility to fidaxomicin, raising a concern since this drug is currently unavailable in Mexican Hospitals.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Centralized calibration of power system dynamic models using variational data assimilation

This paper presents a novel centralized, variational data assimilation approach for calibrating transient dynamic models in electrical power systems, focusing on load model parameters. With the increasing importance of inverter-based resources, assessing power systems' dynamic performance under disturbances has become challenging, necessitating robust model calibration methods. The proposed approach expands on previous Bayesian frameworks by establishing a posterior distribution of parameters using an approximation around the maximum a posteriori value. We illustrate the efficacy of our method by generating events of varying intensity, highlighting its ability to capture the systems' evolution accurately and with associated uncertainty estimates. This research improves the precision of dynamic performance assessments in modern power systems, with potential applications in managing uncertainties and optimizing system operations.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, and 1 tabl
