Preliminary Evidence of Spatial Memory in the Red Squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus: Implications for Cache Recovery and Use.

Many animals use long-term memory for spatial information (Roth et al., 2012). In food recovery, the importance of long-term memory remains unclear. However, the role of long-term spatial memory in successful food recovery has been demonstrated in some animal species (Pravosudov et al., 2015). In line with this finding, previous studies have shown that spatial memory plays a role in the ability of an animal to recover previously stored food. In squirrel species, past studies have examined the performance of individuals in tasks of spatial memory. Nevertheless, squirrels have been previously assumed to forget the locations of food they have buried. In the North American red squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, past research has not explored its use of spatial memory. Since these individuals live in environments of fluctuating food ability, their ability to encode, store, and use spatial information affects their survival. To our knowledge, the duration and precision of long-term spatial memory in North American red squirrels have not been empirically documented. For this reason, our study focused on the role of long-term spatial memory in successful food recovery. To test these abilities, we examined whether squirrels were capable of long-term memory for a precise spatial goal through a food-motivated, associative-learning task. Fertility behavior among adolescent mothers in Tanay, Rizal: Factors and association with access to birthing services and maternal and infant health outcomes

    No full text
This study describes the fertility behavior among adolescent mothers in Tanay, Rizal and its relationship with their socio-demographic characteristics and reproductive health knowledge. The study also established the relationship between the fertility behavior among adolescent mothers and their access to birthing services. It also determined the relationship between their access to birthing services and their maternal and infant health outcomes. This quantitative-descriptive study selected all (127) adolescent mothers from Tanay, Rizal. The data collection tool used was an interview schedule. Results of the study revealed that the adolescent mothers in Tanay, Rizal showed that there was a decline as to the number of pregnancies and they were able to delay their age at first Pregnancy. Among the socio-demographic characteristics, highest educational attainment and mothers occupation were the factors that influenced their fertility behavior. In terms of reproductive health knowledge, study revealed that the total reproductive health knowledge influenced the age at first pregnancy while it does not have any significant relationship as to the number of their pregnancies. Another finding showed that antenatal care visits has a direct relationship on adolescent mothers age at first pregnancy. Only skilled birth attendant among those birthing services has a relationship with maternal health outcomes. Despite adolescent mothers high quality level of access to birthing services, still they have experienced adverse maternal health complications. Lastly, Access to quality birthing services does not have any relationship to infant health outcomes. Adverse health complications were experienced by infants of adolescent mothers despite their compliance in terms of antenatal care visits and accessed to quality skilled birth attendant and health facility

On the Archipelagic Ecology and the Economy of the Philippines

This policy note underscores that while Philippine marine ecosystems are among the world's richest in life forms and of high socioeconomic importance to Filipinos, these are highly threatened. Among the most serious threats are the combinations of overfishing; illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing; habitat destruction; increased demand for fisheries; and climate change. Probably the most serious threat is the “policy blindness” of the country to its vast and rich ecosystem services. Three policy actions are then proposed, effectively urging for national policies and regulations that will heighten the protection and security of all Philippine terrestrial and aquatic life forms and their genetic information from internal and external threats

Science and Public Policy: How the Twain Might Meet

Glover (1993) and Bromley (1999) raised the issue of how science feeds public policy. They discussed views on how research contributes to policy making and how public policy is enriched by research. Glover reviewed the literature on the topic. He summarized their principal points and discussed how economics research improves public policy. He noted four constraints on the ability of research to contribute to policy making: (1) it is unable to meet the needs of the policy makers in terms of providing answers to the questions they need to resolve at the time they need to do it (c.f. Hirschman & Lindblom 1962, Lamb 1987, Wilson 1978, Lynn 1978, Sundquist 1978, Weiss 1977, Rose 1977, Verdier 1984, Sharpe 1977, Davis & Salasin 1978); (2) its logic differs from the logic that policy makers follow (c.f. Leman & Nelson 1981, Nehn 1981, Verdier 1984, Rhoads 1978); (3) it has technical demands on itself that policy makers cannot accommodate (c.f. Weiss 1977, Aaron 1978, Streeten 1988, Szanton 1981); and (4) in many countries (particularly developing ones) there is not enough political space nor resources for doing it to support policy making (c.f. Fine 1990 and Thomas & Grindle 1990).Public policy
