Proteomic Biomarkers for Acute Interstitial Lung Disease in Gefitinib-Treated Japanese Lung Cancer Patients
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) events have been reported in Japanese non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors. We investigated proteomic biomarkers for mechanistic insights and improved prediction of ILD. Blood plasma was collected from 43 gefitinib-treated NSCLC patients developing acute ILD (confirmed by blinded diagnostic review) and 123 randomly selected controls in a nested case-control study within a pharmacoepidemiological cohort study in Japan. We generated ∼7 million tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) measurements with extensive quality control and validation, producing one of the largest proteomic lung cancer datasets to date, incorporating rigorous study design, phenotype definition, and evaluation of sample processing. After alignment, scaling, and measurement batch adjustment, we identified 41 peptide peaks representing 29 proteins best predicting ILD. Multivariate peptide, protein, and pathway modeling achieved ILD prediction comparable to previously identified clinical variables; combining the two provided some improvement. The acute phase response pathway was strongly represented (17 of 29 proteins, p = 1.0×10−25), suggesting a key role with potential utility as a marker for increased risk of acute ILD events. Validation by Western blotting showed correlation for identified proteins, confirming that robust results can be generated from an MS/MS platform implementing strict quality control
Waśnie martyrologiczne Wielkiej Emigracji. Demokraci wobec Mickiewicza
Today, the martyrological discourse is one of the most conspicuous traditions of Polish Romanti-cism. When searching for the genesis of this discourse, one cannot overestimate the importance of the literary and political activities of Adam Mickiewicz from the autumn of 1832 to the middle of 1833. However, little is known about the problem of the resonance of Mickiewicz’s martyrological language and about how this discourse functioned in various texts of the Great Emigration. This paper attempts to answer those questions in reference to left-leaning texts of Komitet Narodowy Polski (KNP) and To-warzystwo Demokratyczne Polskie (TDP) from the 1830s. A study of the writings of KNP has led the author to the conclusion that they represent a common martyrological code of the emigration’s logo-sphere, while the TDP publications constitute an interesting variation of the martyrological collective imagination. The original character of the martyrological expression of the democrats stems from their views on the role of the people in regaining independence. On the other hand, certain common traits existed between TDP and Mickiewicz, which demonstrates that democrats modified the martyrological framework as a national narrative established by Mickiewicz.Today, the martyrological discourse is one of the most conspicuous traditions of Polish Romanti-cism. Czy Maurycy Mochnacki był mesjanistą? Wokół zagadki pewnej deklaracji autora „Powstania narodu polskiego”
In this article Maurycy Mochnacki’s martyrological and messianic declarations in the Preface
to the Uprising of the Polish Nation in 1830–1831 are examined in the context of the martyrological
discourse in the literature of the Great Emigration. Such an affi rmation may appear puzzling given Mochnacki’s rejection of martyrological interpretations of Poland’s history or messianic
readings of his political philosophy, let alone his reputation of being radically opposed to Adam
Mickiewicz’s idea of the sacrifi cial victimhood of the Polish nation. In this study the ideological
and rhetorical aspects of their statements are compared and analysed. There can be little doubt
that in the Preface Mochnacki’s phrasing is steeped in patriotic pathos which seems to be at odds
with the tone of his other writings. This article claims that it was a tactical move on his part: he
chose the familiar martyrological loci merely as a means to enlist the readers’ support for his own
pragmatic programme of restoring Poland’s independence. A general conclusion to be drawn from
this apparent inconsistency is that already at that stage (The Uprising was published in Paris in
1834) the logosphere of the Great Emigration had become so dominated by the martyrological
discourse that Mochnacki could not afford to ignore it
Effect of Topography on Glossiness and Surface Color for a 5052 Aluminum Alloy * 1
The effect of topography on the glossiness and surface color of aluminum alloy A5052 specimens was experimentally investigated. The surfaces of the specimens were machined using either a vertical milling machine, a horizontal milling machine or a shaping machine. Four specimens were produced by each machine so that the arithmetical mean roughness value, Ra, was less than 1 mm under four different cutting conditions. The experimental results revealed that the vertical and horizontal milling glossiness values were nearly the same, while the glossiness values of the shaped surface was less than half of this value. The surface color of all of the specimens was gray, although the lightness value of the surface color, L Ã , for the horizontal milling surface had the highest value. Based on the experimental results, it was determined that the surface texture of specimens produced by these machines could be characterized by their glossiness and surface color. These results could prove an effective indicator for choosing the most appropriate machining method by providing surface texture values
