The effect of core polarization on longitudinal form factors in 10^{10}B

Electron scattering Coulomb form factors for the single-particle quadrupole transitions in pp-shell 10^{10}B nucleus have been studied. Core polarization effects are included through a microscopic theory that includes excitations from the core orbits up to higher orbits with 2\hbarω\omega excitations. The modified surface delta interaction (MSDI) is employed as a residual interaction. The effect of core polarization is found essential in both the transition strengths and momentum transfer dependence of form factors, and gives a remarkably good agreement with the measured data with no adjustable parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Survival of Porcine Pepsin During Cheddar Cheese Making and Its Effect on Casein During Cheese Ripening

A modification of a linear diffusion test for measuring milk clotting enzymes at concentrations of 1 x 10^-4 to 1 x 10^-1 chymosin units/ ml was developed to permit quantitative assay of porcine pepsin in Cheddar cheese with a standard deviation of 6%. The amount of porcine pepsin retained in Cheddar cheese curd was dependent on pH of milk at setting. Milk at pH 6.6, 6.4, 6.2, and 6.0 was set with porcine pepsin, acidified with lactic acid and glucono-~-lactone and made into Cheddar cheese. After pressing the corresponding curd contained 0, 3.64+0 .12 %, 4.79+0.52%, and 5.94+0.30% of the pepsin activity added to the milk. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of cheese revealed increasing degradation of the ~s-casein band with increasing residual pepsin in the curd. However, some degradation of the ~s-casein band was evident in curd set at pH 6.6 which showed no residual pepsin. Curd was made by ultrafiltration from whole milk followed by acidification to pH 5.2 with hydrochloric acid and glucono-6- lactone and vacuum evaporated to 39% moisture at 40 C (no clotting enzymes and no starter) . Degradation of the ~s- casein in this curd was similar to that observed in pepsin cheese set at pH 6.6. All degradation in ~s-casein cannot be attributed to milk clotting enzymes or starter bacteria. Porcine pepsin does not contribute to protein digestion in cheese curd during ripening unless the milk is below pH 6.6 at setting

Religion and the Problem of Rationality: Insights from Akan Religious Thought

    Get PDF
Arguments against the practice of religion and, in general, against belief in metaphysical entities, have been made in different cultures and at different times in human history. This article, however, does not offer a historical outline of such arguments. Rather, it reflects on some contemporary remarks made, especially in Western thought, against religion. It illustrates how a correct understanding of Traditional Akan Religion renders untrue claims that seek to dismiss religion on the grounds of irrationality. Utilising philosophical reflection, it shows how rational belief in a Traditional African Religion such as the Akan one is.Key WordsRationality, revelation, logical positivism, predestination, free will, Akan religion, African religio

The Relationship Between Milk Composition and Swiss Cheese Yields

    Get PDF
Eighty-five samples of milk and Swiss cheese made from the same milk were collected at Cache Valley Dairy Association, Smithfield, Utah, between August, 1979, and July, 1980. The weights of the milk, Swiss cheese and the trim were carefully recorded. The milk samples were analyzed for fat and protein, and the cheese samples were analyzed for fat, protein and moisture. An attempt was made to predict Swiss cheese yields from the fat and protein content of the milk and the moisture content of the cheese. The data were analyzed statistically by Gauss-Newton non-linear least squares method of iteration. Three formulas for predicting Swiss cheese yield were derived. The differences among the three formulas in predicting actual yield were insignificant. A good comparison was demonstrated between Swiss cheese yield and fat and protein in milk. The effect of season on cheese yield was also evaluated. The highest yield of Swiss cheese was in December and the lowest yield was in July. This corresponded with high and low levels of fat and protein in the milk

Modelling of Short Corrosion Crack Growth of Low-Alloy Steel in a Chemical environment

    Get PDF
This study aims to develop a theoretical model for short corrosion crack growth rate happen in some of pre-cracked specimens made of three types of low-alloy steel. The selected material is widely used in boiler pipes of electrical power plants. An experimental system was established to simulate the real work conditions, so the specimens subjected to dynamical loading procedure under different chemical environment conditions at different testing temperatures. The results described the behavior of the material under the testing conditions, and showed that the crack growth rate was accelerated due to corrosion contribution, especially at high temperatures, so the classic mechanical crack growth rate under air at room temperature may be neglected as compared with that resulted due to corrosion and temperature interaction. A mathematical model was developed beginning from the superposition model to describe the total crack growth rate of the pre-cracked specimens, depending on many of introduced parameters, such as corrosion density, water chemistry, time of test, crack geometry, loading frequency, stress intensity, velocity of environment liquid motion through the crack walls, and thermal activation energy due to difference in test temperatures. Furthermore, some of important conclusions were outlined. Keywords: corrosion fatigue crack, crack growth, mathematical mode

A Proposed Agent System for Network Monitoring

    Get PDF
The traditional centralized network management approach presents severe efficiency and scalability limitations in large scale networks. The process of data collection and analysis typically involves huge transfers of management data to the manager which cause considerable network throughput and bottlenecks at the manager side. All these problems processed using the Agent technology as a solution to distribute the management functionality over the network elements. The proposed system consists of the server agent that is working together with clients agents to monitor the logging (off, on) of the clients computers and which user is working on it. file system watcher mechanism is used to indicate any change in files. The results were presented in real time which is minimizing the cost that represents the important factor to successful management of networks that was achieved using agents

The Problem of Destiny in Akan and Yoruba Traditional Thoughts: A Comparative Analysis of the Works of Wiredu, Gyekye and Gbadegesin

    Get PDF
Many African scholars have expressed varied thoughts about the concept of a person, specifically about that which constitutes a person in African philosophy. These philosophers include Kwasi Wiredu, Kwame Gyekye and Segun Gbadegesin. What they have in common, though, is that their ideas on the concept of a person issue largely from the traditional philosophies of some West African peoples. Wiredu and Gyekye reflect on Akan conceptions while Gbadegesin carries out his discussions from the Yoruba cultural perspective. This paper examines the thoughts of these prominent philosophers, with a particular focus on the constitution of the person and the nature of his or her destiny

Reincarnation, Predestination and Moral Responsibility: Critical Issues in Akan Philosophy

    Get PDF
African scholars such as Bolaji Idowu and John Mbiti have argued that belief in reincarnation is alien to African thought. However, this article argues that an adequate understanding of the Ghanaian Akan culture points to the presence of reincarnation in Akan, and for that matter African, philosophy. Nevertheless, unlike in Indian philosophy, for instance, where reincarnation depends on the quality of an individual’s moral life and is a means of ensuring moral responsibility, in Akan philosophy reincarnation is not dependent on moral considerations. Yet there is the idea of moral responsibility in Akan philosophy. The article interrogates how moral responsibility, an idea which is ordinarily regarded as reasonable in the presence of free will, is in the case of the Akan held alongside predestination. The article also reveals some serious philosophical difficulties which this Akan conception of moral responsibility generates in respect of the ‘reincarnated’ person. KeywordsReincarnation, predestination, moral responsibility, Akan philosophy, immortality, dualism, life and deat

UWB elliptical patch monopole antenna with dual-band notched characteristics

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new approach to the design of an UWB monopole antenna with dual band-notched characteristics is presented.   The antenna has the form of an elliptical monopole over a ground plane having an elliptical slot to achieve the UWB. The dual-band notch function is created by inserting a U-shaped and a C-shaped slots on the radiating patch, thus no extra size is needed. The proposed antenna shows a good omnidirectional radiation pattern across the band from 3.2 to more than 14 GHz. The dual band-rejection is for 4.88-5.79GHz centered at 5.4GHz and 7.21-8.46 GHz centered at 7.8 GHz. The antenna prototype using the FR-4 substrate with εr=4.3 has a compact size of 25mm×25 mm ×1.45mm. The fabricated prototype showed experimental results comparable to those obtained from the simulations
