Historical Dialogue and Memory in Policing Change: the Case of the Police in Northern Ireland
This article explores the complex relationship between organisational change and historical dialogue in transitional societies. Using the policing reform process in Northern Ireland as an example, the article does three things: the first is to explore the ways in which policing changes were understood within the policing organisation and âcommunityâ itself. The second is to make use of a processual approach, privileging the interactions of context, process and time within the analysis. Third, it considers this perspective through the relatively new lens of âhistorical dialogueâ, understood here as a conversation and an oscillation between the past, present and future through reflections on individual and collective memories. Through this analysis, we consider how membersâ understandings of a difficult past (and their roles in it) facilitated and/or impeded the organisations change process. Drawing on a range of interviews with previous and current members of the organisation, this article sheds new light on how institutions deal with and understand the past as they experience organisational change within a wider societal transition from conflict to nonviolence.</jats:p
[Osseointegrated dental implants]
Autori pomno i detaljno opisuju prikladnu metodu dentalnih intraosealnih implantata, posebno za rjeĹĄenje teĹĄkih sluÄajeva totalne bezubosti donje Äeljusti. Opisanu metodu zasnivaju na iskustvu Bränemanka i drugih pridodavajuÄi im odreÄene korisne modifikacije, koje metodu Äine prikladnom kod osobito teĹĄkih k(IiniÄkih sluÄajeva, bezubnosti donje Äeljusti kod kojih druge poznate metode ne daju zadovoljavajuÄe rezultate. Ipak za primjenu predloĹženih postupaka postavljaju i odreÄene uvjete meÄu kojima su uz vrhunsku preciznost u radu vaĹžni pravilan odabir pacijenata, visok stupanj njihove motiviranosti i visok stupanj odrĹžavanja individualne higijene usne ĹĄupljine.A careful and thorough presentatio is made of an appropriate method
of dental intra osseous implants, particularly applicable in the treatment sever cases of edentulous mandible. The method described is based on the works of Bränemark and others, with some useful modifications rendering the method appropriate for use in extremely severe clinical cases where no other method is likely to produce any satisfactory results. Certain conditions, though, are set for the application of the proposed procedures, among which high working precision, proper patient selection, high patient motivation and high level of individual oral hygiene should be emphasized
Inhibition of Burkholderia multivorans Adhesion to Lung Epithelial Cells by Bivalent Lactosides
Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) is an opportunistic pathogen in cystic
fibrosis patients which is inherently resistant to antimicrobial agents. The mechanisms of
attachment and pathogenesis of Bcc, a group of 17 species, are poorly understood. The most
commonly identified Bcc species in newly colonised patients, Burkholderia multivorans,
continues to be acquired from the environment. Development of therapies which can
prevent or reduce the risk of colonization on exposure to Bcc in the environment would be
a better alternative to antimicrobial agents. Previously, it has been shown that Bcc strains
bound to many glycolipid receptors on lung epithelia. Using a real-time PCR method to
quantify the levels of binding of B. multivorans to the lung epithelial cells, we have
examined glycoconjugate derivatives for their potential to inhibit host cell attachment.
Bivalent lactosides previously shown to inhibit galectin binding significantly reduced the
attachment of B. multivorans to CF lung epithelial cells at micromolar concentrations. This
was in contrast to monosaccharides and lactose, which were only effective in the
millimolar range. Development of glycoconjugate therapies such as these, which inhibit
attachment to lung epithelial cells, represent an alternative means of preventing infection
with inherently antimicrobially resistant pathogens such as B. multivorans
Planning & Acting: Optimal Markov Decision Scheduling of Aggregated Data in WSNs by Genetic Algorithm
Data aggregation techniques have emerged as promising solutions for extending Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) lifetime. However, this approach suffers from a design issue in delivering the strict requirements needed by some monitoring applications. Carefully balancing Energy, Delay and Accuracy is essential for achieving these requirements. In this work, we focus on distributed data aggregation, where a sensor estimates the network information by the exchange of readings with different priority levels. We then propose an optimal decision policy for scheduling the transmission of the aggregated data at the node level. To model the investigated problem, we first adopt Markov Decision Process (MDP) whereby we define the reward function. Then, we apply a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find a set of optimal decisions that ensures the best trade-off between energy saving, delay and accuracy of the received data based on their priority level. The simulation results yield excellent performance and our optimization shows a significant enhancement up to 20% compared to the other policies
ArDM: first results from underground commissioning
The Argon Dark Matter experiment is a ton-scale double phase argon Time
Projection Chamber designed for direct Dark Matter searches. It combines the
detection of scintillation light together with the ionisation charge in order
to discriminate the background (electron recoils) from the WIMP signals
(nuclear recoils). After a successful operation on surface at CERN, the
detector was recently installed in the underground Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de
Canfranc, and the commissioning phase is ongoing. We describe the status of the
installation and present first results from data collected underground with the
detector filled with gas argon at room temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Light Detection In Noble Elements (LIDINE 2013
Status of the ArDM Experiment: First results from gaseous argon operation in deep underground environment
The Argon Dark Matter (ArDM-1t) experiment is a ton-scale liquid argon (LAr)
double-phase time projection chamber designed for direct Dark Matter searches.
Such a device allows to explore the low energy frontier in LAr. After
successful operation on surface at CERN, the detector has been deployed
underground and is presently commissioned at the Canfranc Underground
Laboratory (LSC). In this paper, we describe the status of the installation and
present first results on data collected in gas phase.Comment: 21 pages, 20 figure
Short communication: Effect of feeding pooled and nonpooled high-quality colostrum on passive transfer of immunity, morbidity, and mortality in dairy calves
peer-reviewedPooling colostrum is commonly practiced on Irish
dairy farms. Pooling can result in dilution when colostrums
with high and low IgG concentrations are
mixed, thereby predisposing calves to failure of passive
immunity. The objectives of this study were to compare
IgG concentrations in colostrum from individual cows
with colostrum pooled from several cows, and assess
serum IgG concentrations, morbidity, and mortality
among calves fed colostrum from their own dam, from
a different cow, or pooled from several cows. We hypothesized
that pooling colostrum reduces IgG concentration
due to dilution compared with colostrum from
individual cows, and that calves fed pooled colostrum
achieve lower serum IgG concentrations than calves fed
colostrum from individual cows. Calves were randomly
assigned to 1 of 3 groups: (1) fed colostrum from their
own dam (n = 20); (2) fed colostrum from a different
dam (n = 20); or (3) fed pooled colostrum (n = 18).
A sample of colostrum fed to each calf was collected.
Serum samples were collected from calves at birth (0
h) and at 24 h after colostrum feeding. Colostrum and
serum IgG concentrations were measured by radial
immunodiffusion. Calves were weighed at birth and at
weaning, and the health status of each calf was assessed
twice daily. Health assessment was based on general
demeanor, rectal temperature, fecal consistency, respiratory
rate, and the presence of cough, nasal, or ocular
discharge. Colostrum and serum IgG concentrations,
and weaning weights were compared using ANOVA.
Associations between group and morbidity or mortality
rates were compared using Ď2
or Fisherâs exact tests.
Median and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of IgG
concentrations of colostrum were 99.4 (81.8â111.5),
95.2 (84.1â107.2), and 100.7 (90.5â104.4) g/L for own
dam, different dam, and pooled groups, respectively.
We did not find any differences in colostrum IgG concentrations
among the colostrum sources. Median
(95% CI) serum IgG concentrations at 24 h were 52.0
(45.6â65.9), 55.7 (51.2â65.9), and 53.1 (46.2â63.7) g/L
for calves that received colostrum from own dam, different
dam, and pooled, respectively. All calves achieved
adequate passive immunity. Serum IgG concentrations
at 24 h, weaning weights, and proportions of morbidity
and mortality were not different among the 3 groups.
Our results suggest that on dairy farms where median
colostrum IgG concentrations are high and colostrum
management is optimal, pooling has a minimal effect
on passive immunity and subsequent calf health
