Contextual Factors Affecting The Implementation of Communicative Language Teaching in Vietnam
Research has proposed the application of communicative language teaching principles into English classrooms to enhance EFL learner’s communicative competence, but it is also noted that there is no existing one-fits-all approach. Language educators are supposed to consider contextual factors affecting the teaching and learning process to reinterpret and adapt communicative language teaching (CLT) principles to fit the local context. The study aims to explore potential factors affecting the adoption of CLT principles in the Vietnamese context by means of reviewing the literature of the filed. In this paper, the researcher defines CLT, discusses the current status of English language teaching in Vietnam, and finally interprets contextual elements that might have an impact on the CLT implementation. The study revealed three main context-relating factors, including Vietnamese teachers’ and learners’ perspectives on language teaching and learning in practice, distinct features of English environment at the local, and cultural expectations. The study drew an implication that ideas and techniques from whatever sources including CLT should be considered as a common pool on which each teacher can adapt to make it socially and culturally sensitive to their own contexts and meet the target learners’ needs and goals
Why Only Focus on One Variety of English? A Problem in EIL Teaching in Vietnam
Although research has proposed the urgent need of exposing learners to World Englishes for enhancing learners’ intercultural competence, Standard English, which is either British English or American English, still remains dominant in English language classrooms in the Vietnamese context. This qualitative-designed case study aims to explore Vietnamese higher-education teachers’ explanations for the reasons behind and their perspectives towards embracing World Englishes in English language classrooms. The study employed semi-structured interviews to collect data from five Vietnamese lecturers. The participants’ answers were recorded before being converted into an Excel sheet. A Coding Process of Inductive Analysis (Cresswell, 2002) was adapted to analyze data. The results indicated that the factors including fixed materials, limited classroom time, teachers’ previous training in Standard English (SE) for their degrees, and learners’ favor of SE accounted for the main use of Standard English in language classrooms. Interestingly, however, all of the participants agreed that increasing knowledge of World Englishes is substantially necessary for successful intercultural communications. Moreover, learners are supposed to keep their identity in international encounters through their own English accents while still ensuring mutual intelligibility. The study drew on an implication for teachers to take an active role as transformative intellectuals in classrooms to make the EFL teaching process meet Vietnamese learners’ goals and needs
An Exploration and an Application of the Recruitment Criteria on Qualified Personnel by the Analytic Hierarchy Process Method at Logistics Enterprises in Vietnam
This study aims to explore criteria for recruiting qualified personnel in logistics companies in Vietnam and apply these criteria into practical recruitment case by using a multiple decision-making method suggested by the authors. To explore recruitment criteria, the survey sample includes 224 logistics companies operating in one of the largest cities in Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City. Cronbach’s Alpha testing methods and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to test and build measurement scales are utilized. In addition, multiple linear regression method was used to find out the influence on recruitment selection decision. The research results show that there are four criteria affecting the decision to recruit qualified personnel including skills, knowledge, health, and personality traits. These criteria are then applied into personnel selection by using analytic hierarchy process method to select the best candidate. The paper offers practical help to industrial practitioners on their recruitment activities
A qualitative examination of market orientation measurement scale for Vietnamese instant coffee industry : case: Trung Nguyen, Nescafé, and Vinacafé
Market orientation is a topic that draws much attention of marketing researchers since the 1950s. There has been many studies contribute to the understanding of this subject. And, researchers find out that market orientation brings many benefit to the company. Most of the studies adopt qualitative method and are conducted in cross-industry context. The cross-industry analysis while provide a broad view of market orientation and business performance, it lacks of focus on a specific industry. Previous theses confirm the relationship between market orientation and business performance in different industries. There exists an urge to concentrate the focus on a specific industry. Moreover, the author realizes that the market orientation has not yet received much attention in Vietnam because Vietnamese company lacks of knowledge and tool to apply it into practice. As a result, this thesis comes into exists with the purpose to provide readers knowledge about market orientation, benefits of market orientation, and how to measure it in the Vietnamese instant coffee context.
The outcome of the research points out that the market orientation positively affects business performance of case company. In addition, the study reveals that traditional measurement scales for market orientation need modification to fit the practice of Vietnamese companies. The modified version of measurement scale is presented as one of the outcomes of this study. This proposed measurement scale will help Vietnamese instant coffee companies to keep track of their business activities and improve company performance.
The thesis has achieved its objectives. After reviewing, the validity and reliability of the study are confirmed. However, the study inevitably has some limitations that this study is restrictedly applied to instant coffee industry and that it is geographically limit to Vietnamese market. The sample of this study is small and restraints the ability to generate a general theory. Hence, further research should be conducted to generalize the thesis results
Development of Questionnaire on Supplier Selection Criteria for Textile and Apparel Industry – A Case Study in Vietnam
Supplier selection criteria are of importance in supplier selection because of their impact on the input materials and production progress of purchasers. However, there is a dearth of researches on a well-designed and validated questionnaire to assess supplier selection criteria for textile and apparel sector in general and for Vietnamese textile and apparel industry in particular. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess those criteria with their level of importance. An integrated approach of qualitative and quantitative was employed in the study. First, the qualitative approach involving purposeful sampling and theoretical sampling was used to explore what supplier selection criteria Vietnamese textile and apparel companies were utilizing after the literature on supplier selection criteria had been reviewed. Next, a prequestionnaire was built and sent to some practitioners and experts for their revision. Then, a pilot survey of 31 companies was conducted in Vietnamese textile and apparel companies to determine the supplier selection criteria that are best suited for Vietnamese textile and apparel companies. Numerous statistical tests were conducted to validate the results which will be a good contribution to the selection process of textile and apparel companies, especially Vietnamese companies. They can utilize the questionnaire as a tool to set their supplier selection criteria
Mastering and optimizing the durability of concrete structures and especially prefabricated products is a major challenge for the entire profession. The goal of this work is to focus on the knowledge and the needs for assessing the performance of the reinforcement to the corrosion phenomenon and to heighten the mechanisms comprehension. Finally, this work allows coming up with a model able to simulate the penetration of chlorides in saturated environment or with wetting-drying cycles, the carbonation, the combination between these two mechanisms and the reinforcement corrosion in variable hydric conditions. A huge experimental campaign leads to a complete characterization of the mechanical, chemical and physical properties of several concretes and their performance towards to the main aggressive environment for the reinforcement corrosion. The final goal of this research project is to come up with a comprehensive and accurate model which should be able to consider all the most important coupled phenomena linked to the concrete durability, from the penetration of aggressive species to the real initiation of the corrosion phenomenon. First practical applications will consist in assessing the lifetime of the concrete structures in a probabilistic way and optimizing the design of concrete cover thickness by taking into account the intrinsic properties of the materials and the environmental conditions. This work allows quantifying the gain in durability performance of concrete product exposed to a risk of reinforcement corrosion obtained by increase the density level, optimize the cast process, or optimize the characteristic of the binder
