Changes in insulin like growth factors, myostatin and vascular endothelial growth factor in rat musculus latissimus dorsi by poly 3-hydroxybutyrate implants
The present study aimed at researching the synergistic effect between an ectopic bone substitute and surrounding muscle tissue. To describe this effect, changes of insulin like growth factors (IGF1, IGF2), myostatin (GDF8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA content of 12 Wistar-King rats musculus latissimus dorsi with implanted poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) scaffold were examined after 6 and 12 weeks. At each time interval six rats were killed and implants and surrounding tissues prepared for genetic evaluation. Eight rats without any implants served as controls. RNAwas extracted from homogenized muscle tissue and reverse transcribed. Changes in mRNA content were measured by Real-Time PCR using specific primers for IGF1, IGF2, GDF8 and VEGF. Developing, Analyzing and Sharing Multivariate Datasets: Individual Differences in L2 Learning Revisited
Following the trends established in psychology and emerging in L2 research, we explain our support for an Open Science approach in this paper (i.e., developing, analyzing and sharing datasets) as a way to answer controversial and complex questions in applied linguistics. We illustrate this with a focus on a frequently debated question, what underlies individual differences in the dynamic system of post-pubertal L2 speech learning? We provide a detailed description of our dataset which consists of spontaneous speech samples, elicited from 110 late L2 speakers in the UK with diverse linguistic, experiential and sociopsychological backgrounds, rated by ten L1 English listeners for comprehensibility and nativelikeness. We explain how we examined the source of individual differences by linking different levels of L2 speech performance to a range of learner-extrinsic and intrinsic variables related to first language backgrounds, age, experience, motivation, awareness, and attitudes using a series of factor and Bayesian mixed-effects ordinal regression analyses. We conclude with a range of suggestions for the fields of applied linguistics and SLA, including the use of Bayesian methods in analyzing multivariate, multifactorial data of this kind, and advocating for publicly available datasets. In keeping with recommendations for increasing openness of the field, we invite readers to rethink and redo our analyses and interpretations from multiple angles by making our dataset and coding publicly available as part of our 40th anniversary ARAL article
Finite size effects on thermal denaturation of globular proteins
Finite size effects on the cooperative thermal denaturation of proteins are
considered. A dimensionless measure of cooperativity, Omega, scales as N^zeta,
where N is the number of amino acids. Surprisingly, we find that zeta is
universal with zeta = 1 + gamma, where the exponent gamma characterizes the
divergence of the susceptibility for a self-avoiding walk. Our lattice model
simulations and experimental data are consistent with the theory. Our finding
rationalizes the marginal stability of proteins and substantiates the earlier
predictions that the efficient folding of two-state proteins requires the
folding transition temperature to be close to the collapse temperature.Comment: 3 figures. Physical Review Letters (in press
Disorder-induced magnetic memory: Experiments and theories
Beautiful theories of magnetic hysteresis based on random microscopic
disorder have been developed over the past ten years. Our goal was to directly
compare these theories with precise experiments. We first developed and then
applied coherent x-ray speckle metrology to a series of thin multilayer
perpendicular magnetic materials. To directly observe the effects of disorder,
we deliberately introduced increasing degrees of disorder into our films. We
used coherent x-rays to generate highly speckled magnetic scattering patterns.
The apparently random arrangement of the speckles is due to the exact
configuration of the magnetic domains in the sample. In effect, each speckle
pattern acts as a unique fingerprint for the magnetic domain configuration.
Small changes in the domain structure change the speckles, and comparison of
the different speckle patterns provides a quantitative determination of how
much the domain structure has changed. How is the magnetic domain configuration
at one point on the major hysteresis loop related to the configurations at the
same point on the loop during subsequent cycles? The microscopic return-point
memory(RPM) is partial and imperfect in the disordered samples, and completely
absent when the disorder was not present. We found the complementary-point
memory(CPM) is also partial and imperfect in the disordered samples and
completely absent when the disorder was not present. We found that the RPM is
always a little larger than the CPM. We also studied the correlations between
the domains within a single ascending or descending loop. We developed new

This conceptual paper argues for the value of an approach to privacy in the digital information environment informed by Luciano Floridi's philosophy of information and information ethics. This approach involves achieving informational privacy, through the features of anonymity and obscurity, through an optimal balance of ontological frictions. This approach may be used to modify models for information behavior and for information literacy, giving them a fuller and more effective coverage of privacy issues in the infosphere. Dynamical chaos and power spectra in toy models of heteropolymers and proteins
The dynamical chaos in Lennard-Jones toy models of heteropolymers is studied
by molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that two nearby trajectories
quickly diverge from each other if the heteropolymer corresponds to a random
sequence. For good folders, on the other hand, two nearby trajectories may
initially move apart but eventually they come together. Thus good folders are
intrinsically non-chaotic. A choice of a distance of the initial conformation
from the native state affects the way in which a separation between the twin
trajectories behaves in time. This observation allows one to determine the size
of a folding funnel in good folders. We study the energy landscapes of the toy
models by determining the power spectra and fractal characteristics of the
dependence of the potential energy on time. For good folders, folding and
unfolding trajectories have distinctly different correlated behaviors at low

Scaling of folding properties in simple models of proteins
Scaling of folding properties of proteins is studied in a toy system -- the
lattice Go model with various two- and three- dimensional geometries of the
maximally compact native states. Characteristic folding times grow as power
laws with the system size. The corresponding exponents are not universal.
Scaling of the thermodynamic stability also indicates size-related
