The Tredegar Iron Works rose to prominence dur- ing the Civil War as the chief armorer of the Confederacy. That four-year period represents the focal point of the company\u27s existence, however, the Civil War experience of the Tredegar should not be regarded as a singular industrial monument to the Confederacy but as a maturation process for the company itself. The focus of this thesis is the rebirth and subsequent growth and contraction of the Tredegar in the ten years following the Civil War

A Project to Produce Calves from Selected Historical Angus Bulls

As part of the 50th anniversary of the McNay Research Farm, cows were inseminated with semen from Angus bulls of the 1950s and the 1970/1980s. The goal was to produce calves from Angus bulls that were popular 50 years ago and 25 years ago for viewing at the McNay Research Farm’s 50th Anniversary celebration in September 2006

In 2022-23, Aspire Higher continued to deliver a sustained and progressive programme of outreach to students in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, and Northamptonshire. This academic year also marked the beginning of a transition to a focus on attainment raising in line with the changing national objectives of the Uni Connect programme, which will continue into 2023-24. This report showcases the approach of the Aspire Higher Uni Connect partnership during this year. The partnership engaged with 4,905 learners from target wards during the 2022-23 academic year. Of these learners, 2,275 had three or more instances of engagement within the academic year.<br/

    Bale Feeder Demonstration

Winter stored feeding and associated waste in hay feeding is a major expense to cow calf operations. SPA summaries from Iowa and Illinois beef herds in 2000 to 2004 determined that 60% of total herd costs were associated with feed. Michigan State University research found that bale rings with solid bottoms and bale rings with cone inserts reduced waste compared with other feeders, with 6.1% and 3.5% waste, respectively. These results were found when feeding medium to high quality hays. With help from local sponsors, research and extension staff evaluated bale feeder waste with lower quality hays

Evaluation of Mixing Wet Distillers Grains with Ground Hay in a Bunker and Covering Modified Distillers Grains to Extend Storage Life—A Demonstration Project

The ethanol industry is rapidly expanding. As much as 40 percent of the energy cost is associated with drying of the feed co-products. Distillers grains are excellent sources of nutrients for the diets of beef cattle, but have a short shelf life. To expand the use of wet distillers feeds to more producers, longer term, low-cost storage methods are required. Studies done in 2006–2007 showed that bagging these products was an effective management practice, but was higher in cost than acceptable to some producers. Additionally, availability of bagging equipment is limited, thus encouraging other storage methodologies to be investigated

Pasture Supplementation of Dakota Bran (TM) Pelleted Distillers Product to Growing Heifers in Southern Iowa

Sixty-six fall born Angus heifers were used in a grazing study to evaluate supplementation of Dakota Bran TM pelleted distillers grain product supplemented on Southern Iowa pastures. The levels of supplementation were two groups of none (CONT) and two groups fed 1.5 percent of body weight (TRMT). Stocking rates were increased 29 percent for the treatment groups compared to controls. Daily gains were 0.79 lb. per day for the controls and 1.48 for the treatments during the supplementation period. Calculations based off of sward height measures for both groups indicate supplemented heifers had a 26.8 percent reduction in pasture dry matter intake. At current costs for Dakota Bran TM treatment groups extra gain slightly outweighed feed costs while higher stocking rates and pasture extension increased value of the product

The growth of the ethanol industry in the Midwest has greatly increased in the last 5 years. This increase has affected the cattle industry in many ways. The increased demand for corn by this industry has driven prices to new highs over the last 3 years. This has affected feed costs for the cattle industry. On the other hand, the growth of the ethanol industry has increased the amount of byproducts that are produced
