    Production of Water from the Air: The Environmental Sustainability of Air-conditioning Systems through a More Intelligent Use of Resources. The Advantages of an Integrated System

    Abstract The possibility of extracting water from air is an activity that has been studied recently, especially with the purpose of producing it for emergencies or exceptional events, when drinking water is not temporarily available. Several mobile/transportable equipment have been designed in order to producing water from the air: they can be placed, if necessary, in appropriate locations where water is needed. Water extraction can be done with different technologies, one of which is represented by cooling water below the dew point, to cause condensation of the vapour content of the air. The system efficiency, normally calculated in standard conditions, should be tested in the climatic conditions in which it will be used, because water production varies significantly with temperature and air water vapour content. An interesting solution may be an equipment for water extraction that contemporarily uses the cooled air for refrigeration, which consists in a combined HVAC system for the dual purpose of water production and air-conditioning. A case study represented by this kind of HVAC system, for a hotel in a sub-tropical arid climate, is proposed in this paper, to demonstrate the advantages of this solution. To this aim, the comparison is made between a typical HVAC system and an integrated air conditioning system, optimized for water production from air, in order to highlight advantages and capabilities of the second one

    Glutathione increase by the n-butanoyl glutathione derivative (GSH-C4) inhibits viral replication and induces a predominant Th1 immune profile in old mice infected with influenza virus

    During aging, glutathione (GSH) content declines and the immune system undergoes a deficiency in the induction of Th1 response. Reduced secretion of Th1 cytokines, which is associated with GSH depletion, could weaken the host defenses against viral infections. We first evaluated the concentration of GSH and cysteine in organs of old mice; then, the effect of the administration of the N-butanoyl GSH derivative (GSH-C4) on the response of aged mice infected with influenza A PR8/H1N1 virus was studied through the determination of GSH concentration in organs, lung viral titer, IgA and IgG1/IgG2a production and Th1/Th2 cytokine profile. Old mice had lower GSH than young mice in organs. Also the gene expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers involved in GSH metabolism and folding of proteins, i.e. Nrf2 and PDI, was reduced. Following infection, GSH content remained low and neither infection nor GSH-C4 treatment affected Nrf2 expression. In contrast, PDI expression was upregulated during infection and appeared counterbalanced by GSH-C4. Moreover, the treatment with GSH-C4 increased GSH content in organs, reduced viral replication and induced a predominant Th1 response. In conclusion, GSH-C4 treatment could be used in the elderly to contrast influenza virus infection by inducing immune response, in particular the Th1 profile

    Micro‐ornamentation patterns in different areas of the epidermis in the gecko Tarentola mauritanica reflect variations in the accumulation of corneous material in Oberhautchen cells

    Micro-ornamentations characterize the surface of scales in lepidosaurians and are summarized in four main patterns, i.e., spi- nulated, lamellated, lamellate-dentate, and honeycomb, although variations of these patterns are present in different species. Although geckos are known to possess a spinulated pattern derived from the Oberhautchen layer, also other pattern variations of the spinulated micro-ornamentation are present such as those indicated as dendritic ramification, corneous belts, and small bare patches. The present study mainly describes the variation of micro-ornamentations present in scales of different skin regions in the Mediterranean gecko Tarentula mauritanica using scannig and transmission electron microscopy. The study reports that the accumulation of corneous material in Oberhautchen cells is not homogenous in different areas of body scales and, when mature, this process gives rise to different sculpturing on the epidermal surface generating not only spinulae but also transitional zones leading to the other main patterns. It is hypothesized that spinulae formation derives from the verti- cal and lateral symmetric growth of tubercolate, non-overlapped scales of geckos. Sparse areas also result smooth or with serpentine-ridges likely revealing the beta-layer located underneath and merged with the Oberhautchen. The eco-functional role of this variable micro-ornamentation in the skin of lizards however remains largely speculative

    Oxysterols are bioactive lipids that act as regulators of lipid metabolism, inflammation, cell viability and are involved in several diseases, including atherosclerosis. Mounting evidence linked the atherosclerosis to endothelium dysfunction; in fact, the endothelium regulates the vascular system with roles in processes such as hemostasis, cell cholesterol, hormone trafficking, signal transduction and inflammation. Several papers shed light the ability of oxysterols to induce apoptosis in different cell lines including endothelial cells. Apoptotic endothelial cell and endothelial denudation may constitute a critical step in the transition to plaque erosion and vessel thrombosis, so preventing the endothelial damaged has garnered considerable attention as a novel means of treating atherosclerosis. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the site where the proteins are synthetized and folded and is necessary for most cellular activity; perturbations of ER homeostasis leads to a condition known as endoplasmic reticulum stress. This condition evokes the unfolded protein response (UPR) an adaptive pathway that aims to restore ER homeostasis. Mounting evidence suggests that chronic activation of UPR leads to cell dysfunction and death and recently has been implicated in pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction. Autophagy is an essential catabolic mechanism that delivers misfolded proteins and damaged organelles to the lysosome for degradation, maintaining basal levels of autophagic activity it is critical for cell survival. Several evidence suggests that persistent ER stress often results in stimulation of autophagic activities, likely as a compensatory mechanism to relieve ER stress and consequently cell death. In this review, we summarize evidence for the effect of oxysterols on endothelial cells, especially focusing on oxysterols-mediated induction of endoplasmic reticulum stress

    Immunization with HIV protease peptides linked to syngeneic erythrocytes

    New potent vaccine adjuvants are desirable for increasing the efficacy of novel vaccine modalities such as DNA and peptides. We therefore tested if syngeneic erythrocytes could serve as delivery vectors for selected HIV peptides and compared the potency of these constructs to immunization with peptides in phosphate buffered saline or in incomplete Freunds adjuvant. Immunization of mice with peptides in a low dose (5 ng) coupled to erythrocytes induced a weak immune response in mice. These peptides alone (5 μg) gave no immune responses, while formulating the peptides (50 μg) in IFA induced strong homologous immunity as well as prominent cross reactivity to a related mutant epitope. Thus, vaccine delivery using syngeneic erythrocytes, although attractive for clinical use, might be of limited value due to the low amount of antigen that can be loaded per erythrocyte

    CH 3 GHz Observations of Molecular Clouds Along the Galactic Plane

    Spectra in the CH 2Π1/2^2\Pi_{1/2}, J=1/2, F=1-1 transition at 3335 MHz were obtained in three 5-point crosses centered on the Galactic plane at =\ell = 50\arcdeg, 100\arcdeg, and 110\arcdeg. The lines of sight traverse both Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) and local, smaller entities. This transition is a good tracer of low-density molecular gas and the line profiles are very similar to CO(1-0) data at nearly the same resolution. In addition, the CH 3335 MHz line can be used to calibrate the CO-H2_2 conversion factor (XCO_{\rm CO}) in low-density molecular gas. Although this technique underestimates XCO_{\rm CO} in GMCs, our results are within a factor of two of XCO_{\rm CO} values calibrated for GMCs by other techniques. The similarity of CH and CO line profiles, and that of XCO_{\rm CO} values derived from CH and more traditional techniques, implies that most of the molecular gas along the observed lines of sight is at relatively low densities (nn \le 103^3 cm3^{-3}).Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the AJ, revised after referee repor
