Música, Joyce e Dublinenses – Texto e Filme

“Songs, Joyce and Dubliners – Text and Film” This paper tries to show how music is so ingrained in Irish culture that it is present not only in theeveryday life of the people but also in literary manifestations. In James Joyce’s Dubliners we can see in several of the short stories of the collection the use of songs and their words as complementary to the plot itself. Presenting some of the examples from the collection, this paper is a good way for beginners to get acquainted with this very important work. By dealing with the original text by Joyce and with the film version made by John Huston we put together two important semiotic representations which increase the value of both.Keywords: Dubliners; John Huston’s films; music

Para tal, investiga principalmente Dublinenses e Um Retrato do Artista quando Jovem, contextualizando a obra de Joyce em relação a registros históricos, a algumas manifestações artísticas populares e ao Renascimento Literário Irlandês, com o subsídio de teorias da ironia, especialmente de Guido Almansi, e de estudos de Homi Bhabha sobre a nação moderna.This work studies the writings of James Joyce and the way in which the questions of the Irish nation are deah with in them. In order to do this, it probes mainly into Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, seeing Joyce's work in the Hght of its historical context and ofthe Irish Literary Revival, highlighting the role of some popular artistic manifestations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The theoretical basis lies on theories of irony, mainly those of Guido Almansi, and on Homi Bhabha's studies ofthe modem nation

O artigo tem como objetivo analisar como a peça de Martin McDonagh, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, dialoga criticamente com a memória cultural irlandesa ao desconstruir a idealização feita no inicio do século XX da família como uma instituição base para o desenvolvimento da identidade cultural do país. Considerando que a solidificação do Estado Livre da Irlanda contava com a propagação dos nacionalismos cultural e político da posição fixa de gêneros para que a ordem da nação fosse garantida, examinamos a peça como uma contra-narrativa pós-moderna que zomba da utopia nacionalista irlandesa ao apresentar a célula familiar como uma prisão claustrofóbica, alienante e conflitiva, com implicações negativas das normas tradicionais de gênero
