Raman Spectroscopy Applied to Health Sciences
Raman spectroscopy has remarkable analytical abilities to scientists who want to study biological samples. The use of Raman spectroscopy within biologic samples has been increasing in the last years because it can provide biochemical information, allows discrimination between two or more sample groups, and, contrary to what happens with other spectroscopic techniques, water has no interference in the spectra. Biological samples typically do not require extensive preparation, and biochemical and structural information extracted from spectroscopic data can be used to characterize different groups. This chapter presents the general features of Raman spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopic tools relevant to the application in health sciences. In order to emphasize the potential of Raman in this research field, examples of its application in oncology, in bacterial identification and in dementia diagnosis are given
Numerical evaluation of the behavior of tubular columns in the connections to I beams with welded reverse channel
This paper presents results of numerical study on the behaviour of tubular columns in the connections to I beams with U-profiles, effected on the basis of a parametric variation of the most significant characteristics of tubular profiles. The parameters considered are the thicknesses, the widths and the diameters of the tubular columns, the filling with concrete. The main purpose is the characterisation of the nonlinear behaviour of this type of steel joints. The results of the parametric study with numerical models allow correlate the parameters considered with the structural behaviour of the connection, defined by the resistance, the stiffness and the rotation capacity and calibrate the experimental tests. The numerical models are developed with the software LUSAS.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Behaviour of welded reverse channel joint components of I beam to tubular columns conections
The main purpose of the investigation presented is the characterisation of the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of steel joints between I profile beams and hollow section columns with welded reverse channel.
The experimental program supporting this investigation consists on the determination of the characteristics of the nonlinear cyclic behaviour of the connection between I profile beams and circular or rectangular hollow section columns. The main goal of this research program is the identification and characterization of the connection components that control the hysteretic behaviour of the connections to be used in seismic areas. The paper presents preliminary test results
Behaviour of joint components of I beam to tubular columns connections with welded reverse channel
The main purpose of this investigation is the characterisation of the nonlinear cyclic behaviour of steel joints between I profile beams to hollow section columns with welded reverse channel. In this paper a comparison is made between experimental tests and numerical finite element model results. In the experimental program the characteristics of the nonlinear behaviour of the principal reverse channel components is assessed by means of bending tests. The numerical models are developed in the software LUSAS and calibrated with the results from the experimental tests. The main focus of these tests will be on the results concerning the main components of the reverse channel detail, i.e. web face in bending, flanges panels in shear, compression and tension, in terms of strength, stiffness and rotation capacity. The parameters which have been varied in the tests are the geometry of the loaded area and the dimensions of the flanges and web of the U shaped element

steel joints between I profile beams to hollow section columns with welded reverse channel. In
this paper a comparison is made between experimental tests and numerical finite element
model results, enabling the model validation and determinate the behaviour characteristics of
the main components of the reverse channel joining detail, i.e. web face in bending, flanges
panels in shear, compression and tension. This study results are presented in terms of
resistance, stiffness and rotation capacity of the joint. In the experimental program the
characteristics of the nonlinear behaviour of the principal reverse channel components are
assessed by means of bending tests, monotonic and cyclic. The numerical models are developed
with the software LUSAS and calibrated with the results from the experimental tests
Frailty in cardiovascular disease: Screening tools
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in developed countries and disproportionately affects older adults. Frailty is a complex clinical syndrome with multiple causes and contributing factors in which there is increased vulnerability when exposed to a minor stressor and increased risk for adverse outcomes, such as disability, hospitalization and mortality. Frailty is an important prognostic factor in patients with CVD, and so identifying this feature when assessing these patients may help to individually tailor cardiovascular treatment. The first step is to identify frailty. Several tools have been validated as screening methods for frailty. However, they diverge with regard to complexity, nature, feasibility and the outcome they can predict. The aim of this review is to describe the available screening tools for frailty and to examine their usefulness in patients with CVD.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
