    An excel template for processing examination results for higher institutions in Nigeria

    In this work, we designed, developed and implemented an examination result processing template for all the Postgraduate programmes in the Faculty of Science, Kaduna State University, Kaduna. The designed template when fed in with data computes and grades students appropriately. Its design was done using the “IF” and “OR” logical functions.     A discrete-time mathematical model for the control of weeds population density towards improving crop yields

    In this paper, a mathematical model for the control of single weed species population density is proposed. The model’s steady-state solutions were obtained and analysed for local and global stabilities. The analysis reveals that the model is locally asymptotically stable and as well globally stable. Graphical simulations were carried out to support the analytic analysis of the model for the global stability and concludes that, weed proliferation may be controlled if the control strategy is target at the recruitment factors. Base on this finding, it is recommended that for effective control, weeds management tactics should be targeted at the recruitment stage rather than the usual practice of controlling mature weed through the application of herbicides. Hence, application of the results of this work may reduce or eradicate the weeds density and improve crop yield at its optimum capacity for sustainable food production

    Design and construction of a simple boat trailer for Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology, New Bussa

    A simple boat trailer with an overall length of 4.59m, breathes 1.68m, and weight of 87kg was designed and constructed using locally available metals and scrap materials. The boat trailer was used to tow a boat of 250kg weight through a distance of 14km without affecting the safety and speed of the car. The construction resulted to the production of an open cart that is light and easily maneuvered that one person can move it manually without difficulty. The total production cost was N32, 300 which is affordable in relation to the cost of transporting boats through the use of pick up vans. The boat trailer can be easily maneuvered when coupled to any car or van. This makes it adequate for towing and for safer movement of boats from the school boat yard to any water bodies

    The effect of Brinkman number and magnetic field on laminar convection in a vertical plate channel with uniform and asymmetric temperatures has been studied. The dimensionless form of momentum and energy balanced equations has been solved using one term perturbation series solution. The solution of the dimensionless velocity u and temperature θ were obtained. The numerical values of the skin friction and the Nusselt number were obtained and tabulated. It was found that the effect of magnetic parameter enhances the effect of flow velocity by suppressing the turbulence while Brinkman number has accelerating effect on the temperature profile.Keywords: MHD, Laminar, Convection, vertical channel, Brinkman numbe

    An enhanced iris recognition and authentication system using energy measure

    In order to fight identity fraud, the use of a reliable personal identifier has become a necessity. Using Personal Identification Number (PIN) or a password is no longer secure enough to identify an individual. Iris recognition is considered to be one of the best and accurate form of biometric measurements compared to others, it has become an interesting research area. Iris recognition and authentication has a major issue in its code generation and verification accuracy, in order to enhance the authentication process, a binary bit sequence of iris is generated, which contain several vital information that is used to calculate the Mean Energy and Maximum Energy that goes into the eye with an adopted Threshold Value. The information generated can further be used to find out different eye ailments. An iris is obtained using a predefined iris image which is scanned through eight (8) different stages and wavelet packet decomposition is used to generate 64 wavelet packages bit iris code so as to match the iris codes with Hamming distance criteria and evaluate different energy values. The system showed 98% True Acceptance Rate and 1% False Rejection Rate and this is because some of the irises weren’t properly captured during iris acquisition phase.     Dynamic Power Management in Wireless Sensor Network

    This research focuses on reducing or minimizing the power consumption, thereby increasing the network lifetime and also demonstrates a methodology for power consumption evaluation of WSN. The research also analyzes the energy consumption of ad hoc nodes using IEEE 802.11 interfaces; this was achieved using OPNET simulator. The evaluation takes into account the properties of the medium access protocol and the process of forwarding packets in ad hoc mode. The key point is to determine the node lifetime based on its average power consumption. The average power consumption is estimated considering how long the node remains sleeping, idle, receiving or transmitting

    The effect of hydrogen on transient flow of hydrogen natural gas mixture

    Hydrogen is a high pressure gas, hence hydrogen natural gas mixture require an accurate prediction of transient flow parameter. The reduce order modelling is used in analysis of transient flow, where viscosity change is neglected thereby reducing the governing equations to Euler equation based on the assumption. The hydrogen natural gas mixture is homogenous, with pressure and velocity considered as principal dependent variable where polytrophic process is admitted. For improvement on the accurate prediction of flow parameters on the analysis of transient flow of hydrogen natural gas mixture in pipeline implicit Steger-Warming flux vector splitting method (FSM) used in the construction of efficient reduce order model. The result shows significant improvement on efficiency, accuracy and uniqueness when compared to normal conventional numerical techniques. The effect of heat transfer is observed on heat flux and internal energy of transient flow. The methods of reduced order with and without static correction show significant agreement for different gas ratio. The prediction of flow parameter along the pipeline can improvegas delivery and the analysis of transient flow behaviour at any point during the flow

    Extadigits: an unusual presentation

    Extra digit is a common congenital anomaly in our environment which usually affect the hands and occasionally the feet but very rarely both. A five months old male infant presented with accessory digits of the both hands and feet, with two extra digits on the left hand and one on the right hand, right foot and left foot. The extra digits were well developed, with normal range of motion, good capillary refill and intact sensation. General examination revealed an otherwise healthy child with no associated congenital malformations. The treatment modality used was surgical removal of the extra digits and reconstruction of any associated anomalies in the remaining ray such as longitudinal epiphyseal bracket. After the surgery the patients is no longer experience difficulty with fitting gloves and shoes as well as discrimination among peer groups in his future life

    Quality control tests on Andrographis paniculata nees (family: acanthaceae) - An Indian 'Wonder' plant grown in Nigeria

    Purpose: To characterize the aerial parts of Andrographis paniculata , a bitter Indian herb grown in Nigeria, for the purpose of quality control. Methods: The determination of bitterness value and of various physicochemical characteristics; tests for key phytochemicals; and thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the air-dried herb, were carried out as prescribed in standard texts. Results: The mean bitterness value of the herb for both men and women was 2.86 ± 1.74 x 10 3 units per g. The male value (2.07 ± 1.42 x 10 3 ) appeared to be lower than the female′s (3.52 ± 1.82 x 10 3 ) but the difference was not statistically significant. The results (% w/w) of loss on drying (10.64 ± 0.36), total ash (14.10 ± 4.49), water extractive value (30.37 ± 2.63) and acid insoluble ash (1.00 ± 0.06) were similar to those reported for the Asian plant. The phytochemical tests revealed the presence of glycosides, saponins, tannins and alkaloids, but not of anthraquinones. Normal phase TLC of the drug yielded 5 spots as against 6 spots yielded by reverse TLC. Conclusion: The results provide useful quantitative and descriptive data that are essential for identifying and characterizing the Nigerian grown herb for the purpose of quality control; and confirm key similarities between the Nigerian and the Asian plant
