    Development of high temperature superconducting current feeders for a large-scale superconducting experimental fusion system

    The National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), in collaboration with universities and laboratories in Japan, the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK) and the Max-Planck Institut fur Plasma Physik (IPP) in Germany, is planning to develop high temperature superconducting (HTS) current feeders for large-scale superconducting coils. Two programs are being progressed: one is a current feedthrough for superfluid helium (He II) cooled superconducting coils; the other is current leads for experimental fusion system. The paper describes the present status of the two programs, including joint experiments of a 20 kA Bi-2223 current lead developed by FZK and development of a prototype YBCO bulk current feedthrough for He II cooled superconducting coils. In addition, the test results of Bi-2212 tubes fabricated by diffusion process, applicable to HTS current leads, are described Bi_2Sr_2 CaCu_2O_

    In the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), the following three research items are being advanced as application of high temperature superconductor (HTS) to an experimental fusion plasma system, through collaboration with universities and laboratories. The first is an application of HTS in the large current feedthrough to a superconducting coil cooled with superfluid helium in order to reconcile low heat load and stable large current transport capability. A 20 kA current feedthrough from 4.4 K to 1.8 K has been being developed using YBCO bulk superconductors manufactured by the QMG process. The second is the development of a 30 kA HTS current lead. The Bi2212 bulk material fabricated by the diffusion process is considered as a candidate material for HTS current leads. The third is the development of the superconducting magnetic-levitation coil for Mini-RT wound with Bi2223 tape conductor. A magnetic-levitation coil operated in persistent-current mode has to levitate for 8 hours without a feed of refrigerant. Present status of these HTS application researches in NIFS is reported

    Rib fracture after stereotactic radiotherapy on follow-up thin-section computed tomography in 177 primary lung cancer patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chest wall injury after stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for primary lung cancer has recently been reported. However, its detailed imaging findings are not clarified. So this study aimed to fully characterize the findings on computed tomography (CT), appearance time and frequency of chest wall injury after stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for primary lung cancer</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>A total of 177 patients who had undergone SRT were prospectively evaluated for periodical follow-up thin-section CT with special attention to chest wall injury. The time at which CT findings of chest wall injury appeared was assessed. Related clinical symptoms were also evaluated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Rib fracture was identified on follow-up CT in 41 patients (23.2%). Rib fractures appeared at a mean of 21.2 months after the completion of SRT (range, 4 -58 months). Chest wall edema, thinning of the cortex and osteosclerosis were findings frequently associated with, and tending to precede rib fractures. No patients with rib fracture showed tumors > 16 mm from the adjacent chest wall. Chest wall pain was seen in 18 of 177 patients (10.2%), of whom 14 patients developed rib fracture. No patients complained of Grade 3 or more symptoms.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rib fracture is frequently seen after SRT for lung cancer on CT, and is often associated with chest wall edema, thinning of the cortex and osteosclerosis. However, related chest wall pain is less frequent and is generally mild if present.</p

    SP7 Inhibits Osteoblast Differentiation at a Late Stage in Mice

    RUNX2 and SP7 are essential transcription factors for osteoblast differentiation at an early stage. Although RUNX2 inhibits osteoblast differentiation at a late stage, the function of SP7 at the late stage of osteoblast differentiation is not fully elucidated. Thus, we pursued the function of SP7 in osteoblast differentiation. RUNX2 induced Sp7 expression in Runx2−/− calvarial cells. Adenoviral transfer of sh-Sp7 into primary osteoblasts reduced the expression of Alpl, Col1a1, and Bglap2 and mineralization, whereas that of Sp7 reduced Bglap2 expression and mineralization at a late stage of osteoblast differentiation. Sp7 transgenic mice under the control of 2.3 kb Col1a1 promoter showed osteopenia and woven-bone like structure in the cortical bone, which was thin and less mineralized, in a dose-dependent manner. Further, the number of processes in the osteoblasts and osteocytes was reduced. Although the osteoblast density was increased, the bone formation was reduced. The frequency of BrdU incorporation was increased in the osteoblastic cells, while the expression of Col1a1, Spp1, Ibsp, and Bglap2 was reduced. Further, the osteopenia in Sp7 or Runx2 transgenic mice was worsened in Sp7/Runx2 double transgenic mice and the expression of Col1a1 and Bglap2 was reduced. The expression of Sp7 and Runx2 was not increased in Runx2 and Sp7 transgenic mice, respectively. The expression of endogenous Sp7 was increased in Sp7 transgenic mice and Sp7-transduced cells; the introduction of Sp7 activated and sh-Sp7 inhibited Sp7 promoter; and ChIP assay showed the binding of endogenous SP7 in the proximal region of Sp7 promoter. These findings suggest that SP7 and RUNX2 inhibit osteoblast differentiation at a late stage in a manner independent of RUNX2 and SP7, respectively, and SP7 positively regulates its own promoter

    Predicting invasions of North American basses in Japan using native range data and a genetic algorithm

    Largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and smallmouth bass M. dolomieu have been introduced into freshwater habitats in Japan, with potentially serious consequences for native fish populations. In this paper we apply the technique of ecological niche modeling using the genetic algorithm for rule-set prediction (GARP) to predict the potential distributions of these two species in Japan. This algorithm constructs a niche model based on point occurrence records and ecological coverages. The model can be visualized in geographic space, yielding a prediction of potential geographic range. The model can then be tested by determining how well independent point occurrence data are predicted according to the criteria of sensitivity and specificity provided by receiver–operator curve analysis. We ground-truthed GARP’s ability to forecast the geographic occurrence of each species in its native range. The predictions were statistically significant for both species (P , 0.001). We projected the niche models onto the Japanese landscape to visualize the potential geographic ranges of both species in Japan. We tested these predictions using known occurrences from introduced populations of largemouth bass, both in the aggregate and by habitat type. All analyses robustly predicted known Japanese occurrences (P , 0.001). The number of smallmouth bass in Japan was too small for statistical tests, but the 10 known occurrences were predicted by the majority of models
