    Investigation on the safety and probiotic potentials of yoghurts sold in Owerri metropolis in Imo State Nigeria

    Investigation on the microbial safety and probiotic potentials of different yoghurt brands sold in Owerri, Imo State Nigeria, was carried out using standard microbiological procedures. Ten each, of five different brands of commercially available yoghurt packaged in plastic containers were purchased from the street vendors and shopping malls in Owerri metropolis. The mean total count of samples on Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) and De Mann Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) agar media ranged from 2.0×107 to 6.0×108 and 1.0×108 to 5.4 × 108 cfu/ml respectively. The yoghurt isolates were identified as Streptococcus and Lactobacillus species; these isolates were resistant to commonly used antibiotics and inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa from clinical samples. No viable growth of isolates was observed in simulated gastric fluid of pH 1.5 to 2.5. Slight decrease in viable count of Lactobacillus spp. from 4.0×107 to 3.0×107 cfu/ml and Streptococcus spp. from 3.0×108 to 2.0×108 cfu/ml was observed in bile of pH 8.28 to 8.30. The isolates were recovered from faecal samples two weeks after ingestion with mean count ranging from no growth (zero) to 5.8×108 cfu/ml on MRS agar media. The isolates were found to exhibit some probiotic potentials and no pathogen was isolated from samples.     Amino acids profile, functional and sensory properties of infant complementary gruel produced from rice and defatted bambaranut flour meal

    Background: The type of complementary food a child is fed should consider the energy and nutrient quality of the meal to meet the child’s growth requirement. Objective: To determine amino acid profile, functional and sensory properties of infant complementary gruel produced from rice and defatted bambaranut flour meal. Materials and methods: Rice and defatted bambaranut composite flour meal was made into blends of various proportions 90:10%, 80:20%, 70:30% and 60:40%. The amino acid profile, functional and sensory properties of the blends were analyzed. Results: Essential amino acids such as leucine(6.34g/100g-7.30g/100g), lysine (4.64g/100g-5.10g/100g),Isoleucine (3.48g/100g-3.70g/100g), phenylalanine (3.22g/100g-3.91g/100g), tryptophan (0.81g/100g-0.90g/100g), valine (3.31g/100g-4.10g/100g), methionine (2.10g/100g-2.36g/100g), histidine (2.10g/100g-2.26g/100g) and threonine (3.12g/100g-3.22g/100g) were detected; while non-essential acids such as Proline (3.10g/100g-3.30g/100g), arginine (5.02g/100g-6.38g/100g), tyrosine (2,12g/100g-3.30g/100g), cysteine (1.01g/100g-1.34g/100g), alanine (4.03g/100g-4.46g/100g), glutamic acid (11.12g/100g-13.20g/100g), glycine (3.19g/100g-4.20g/100g),serine(2.57g/100g-3.30g/100g), and aspartic acid (7.70g/100g-8.30g/100g) were also detected. The functional properties evaluated were bulk density which ranged from 0.54g/ml -0.58g/ml; water absorption capacity 141.40g/ml- 180.56g/ml; oil absorption capacity 166.32g/ml-128.21g/ml; swelling capacity 12.09g/ml-18.70g/ml; foam capacity 3.18g/ml-6.20g/ml; least gelation 3.80g/ml-7.62g/ml. Conclusion: The samples were acceptable to the panelists (nursing mothers); although sample rice based contained 10% defatted bambaranut infant complementary gruel with highest average mean score of 7.93 was most preferred

    A six year review of hysterectomy for benign gynaecological conditions at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri

    Background: Hysterectomy is one of the commonest major gynaecological surgeries performed for both benign and malignant conditions. Hysterectomy for benign gynaecological conditions is usually done to improve the quality of life of women who suffer from these disorders. Aim of current study was to analyze hysterectomies performed in the centre for benign gynaecological conditions during the period of the study.Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study of all cases of hysterectomy (for benign gynaecological disorders over a 6 year period (January 1, 2006 - December 31, 2011) at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. Information on socio-demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, indication for surgery, type of hysterectomy, operative findings, and postoperative complications during admission were retrieved and analyzed.Results: Hysterectomy for benign gynecological conditions accounted for 14.1% of all major gynecological surgeries. The leading indications for hysterectomy were uterovaginal prolapse (47.3%), uterine fibroid (33.6%), and dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) (9.1%). Abdominal hysterectomy accounted for 55.0% while vaginal hysterectomy accounted for 45.0% of hysterectomies performed for benign gynecological conditions. A post-operative morbidity rate of 23.7% was found. Post-operative fever, requiring investigation and treatment, was the leading complication. No mortality associated with hysterectomy was recorded.Conclusions: Hysterectomy for benign gynaecological conditions is relatively common and safe in our centre, but there is need for improvement on the high post-operative morbidity rate

    Creative Accounting around Contemporaneous Involuntary Bank Mergers and Acquisitions, and Non-Routine Board Changes

    Thispaper examines the magnitude and direction of creative accounting following contemporaneousmergers and acquisitions consummated under duress, and abnormal corporate boardchanges taking evidence from Nigeria. But most importantly, the paper determineswhether any likely resultant abnormal accrual following corporate acquisitions canbe unconsciously normalized by ‘big bath’ accounting players following contemporaneousnon-routine board leader replacement. Evidence has shown that following acquisitions,mangers can engage in income-increasing management on one hand. On the other hand,new CEOs can give earnings a ‘big’ downward ‘bath’ blaming their predecessors forthe poor performance while pursuing personal contractual performance benefit. Hence,within extensive researches already carried out on the impacts of acquisitions andboard replacement on creative accounting, there remains unanswered question of theextent of accrual manipulation when the two events occur simultaneously. Drawingheavily from Jones and Dechow models in estimating normal accrual, normal cash flowfrom operations and both discretionary accrual and cash flow, we report consistentwith extant literatures, that under consolidation duress, the victim firms engagein a significant discretionary income-increasing manipulation. Our study also confirmsthat significant downward accrual management follows corporate board changes inNigeria. However, the board changes that follow consolidation restructuring limitthe persistence of the abnormal accrual in the end. We find that the ‘Big bath’accounting players reverse although unconsciously a significant proportion of theupward managed accrual from opportunistic perspective. The ratio of pre consolidationaccrual hiking to post-consolidation board changes reversal is 3:2, which indicates67% normalization for stock based acquisitions. For cash based acquisitions however,the reversal is much lower. Our findings suggest that where abnormal earnings ishighly suspected following involuntary acquisitions, board restructuring that willlead to new managers could help in correcting or reversing significant proportionof the accrual abnormality.     Impact of COVID-19 on surgical emergency presentations in a tertiary hospital in the developing world

    BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and the institution of measures to contain the spread of the virus have disrupted patients' elective and emergency care, with scarce resources being channeled towards care of emergency presentations and containing the virus. The study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 on surgical accidents and emergency presentations in a major teaching hospital. METHOD: This was a comparative retrospective study. All presentations between February to July 2019 (non-COVID-19 period) were compared with the same period in 2020 (COVID-19 period). Patients' biodata, including surgical specialty that managed the patient, diagnosis, and treatment offered, were collated and analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0. Armonk, NY: I.B.M. Corp. RESULTS: We included 3463 patients in the study; 2419 (69.9%) were males, while 1044(30.1%) were females. The mean age of the patients in 2019 was 31.83 ±19.31 years, and that of 2020 was 34.93±19.99 years (P=0.001). During the lockdown period, emergency surgical presentations declined significantly by 17% (1894 versus 1569: P=0.001). There was a general decline in surgical emergency presentations across surgical specialties, with orthopedic and otorhinolaryngology (E.N.T.) having the greatest impact (313 versus 202 P=0.044). Presentation for trauma decreased by 18% (1394 versus 1144 P=0.711). Operative interventions declined by 47% (292 versus 155 P=0.001). There was a decline of 31% in the number of admissions for in-patient care (420 versus 290 P=0.019). CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria was associated with a reduction in the number of surgical emergency presentations and surgical interventions

    Evaluation of nephrotoxic effect of lead exposure among automobile repairers in Nnewi Metropolis

    Background:Lead toxicity is one of the most common occupational hazards that affect several organs of the body, kidney inclusive. Auto repairers are exposed to lead in petrol, radiator, leaded battery, lead soldering wire, and spray paints, thus this study was designed to evaluate lead-induced nephrotoxic effect among automobile repairers.Methods:A total of 80 male subjects within the age range of 20 and 65 years were recruited for this study. 50 subjects were occupationally exposed automobile repairers, of which 15 were electricians, 21 mechanics and 14 panel beaters/spray painters, whereas 30 were non-exposed students and staff from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi campus. Blood sample was collected from these individuals and their blood lead levels were determined alongside creatinine, urea, uric acid, sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate.Results:The results showed that the mean levels of blood lead is significantly higher in automobile repairers than in control group (P 0.05). The evaluation of the renal function markers show that, there were significant increases in the mean serum concentration of creatinine, urea, and uric acid in the study group compare to the control subjects (P 0.05).Conclusion:Findings from this study show that blood lead level is high among automobile repairers above CDC recommended level for adults. This high blood lead level among automobile repairers may be responsible for raised levels of renal markers which may eventually lead to their renal damage.

    Stroke prevalence amongst sickle cell disease patients in Nigeria: a multi-centre study

    Background: Stroke is a life-changing, debilitating complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). Previous studies had recorded high stroke prevalence amongst this group of patients. Nigeria has a large population of people affected by this condition and this study aims to assess the stroke prevalence in this large population.Methodology: Stroke prevalence data from 14 physicians working in 11 tertiary health centres across the country was collated by doctors using the sickle cell registers and patient case notes. This data was then collated and used to obtain the overall stroke prevalence in adult and children.Results: The stroke prevalence in sickle cell disease patients in Nigeria was observed to be 12.4 per 1000 patients. Prevalence in the adult patients was 17.7 per 1000 patients and 7.4 per 1000 patients in children. Twenty three percent of the affected patients had more than stroke episode.Conclusion: The stroke prevalence in Nigeria is lower than previously recorded rates and further studies will be required to investigate other factors which may play a role.Keywords: sickle cell, stroke, Nigeria, prevalenc

    Beyond ''women's traits'': exploring how gender, social difference and household characteristics influence trait preferences

    Open Access Journal; Published online: 14 Dec 2021Demand-led breeding strategies are gaining importance in public sector breeding globally. While borrowing approaches from the private sector, public sector programs remain mainly focused on food security and social impact related outcomes. This necessitates information on specific user groups and their preferences to build targeted customer and product profiles for informed breeding decisions. A variety of studies have identified gendered trait preferences, but do not systematically analyze differences related to or interactions of gender with other social dimensions, household characteristics, and geographic factors. This study integrates 1000minds survey trait trade-off analysis with the Rural Household Multi-Indicator Survey to study cassava trait preferences in Nigeria related to a major food product, gari. Results build on earlier research demonstrating that women prioritize food product quality traits while men prioritize agronomic traits. We show that food product quality traits are more important for members from food insecure households and gender differences between men and women increase among the food insecure. Furthermore, respondents from poorer households prioritize traits similar to respondents in non-poor households but there are notable trait differences between men and women in poor households. Women in female headed household prioritized quality traits more than women living with a spouse. Important regional differences in trait preferences were also observed. In the South East region, where household use of cassava is important, and connection to larger markets is less developed, quality traits and in ground storability were prioritized more than in other states. These results reinforce the importance of recognizing social difference and the heterogeneity among men and women, and how individual and household characteristics interact to reveal trait preference variability. This information can inform trait prioritization and guide development of breeding products that have higher social impact, which may ultimately serve the more vulnerable and align with development goals

    Effects of deposition time and post-deposition annealing on the physical and chemical properties of electrodeposited CdS thin films for solar cell application

    CdS thin films were cathodically electrodeposited by means of a two-electrode deposition system for different durations. The films were characterised for their structural, optical, morphological and compositional properties using x-ray diffraction (XRD), spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) respectively. The results obtained show that the physical and chemical properties of these films are significantly influenced by the deposition time and post-deposition annealing. This influence manifests more in the as-deposited materials than in the annealed ones. XRD results show that the crystallite sizes of the different films are in the range (9.4 – 65.8) nm and (16.4 – 66.0) nm in the as-deposited and annealed forms respectively. Optical measurements show that the absorption coefficients are in the range (2.7×104 – 6.7×104) cm-1 and (4.3×104 – 7.2×104) cm-1 respectively for as-deposited and annealed films. The refractive index is in the range (2.40 – 2.60) for as-deposited films and come to the value of 2.37 after annealing. The extinction coefficient varies in the range (0.1 – 0.3) in asdeposited films and becomes 0.1 in annealed films. The estimated energy bandgap of the films is in the range (2.48 – 2.50) eV for as-deposited films and becomes 2.42 eV for all annealed films. EDX results show that all the films are S-rich in chemical composition with fairly uniform Cd/S ratio after annealing. The results show that annealing improves the qualities of the films and deposition time can be used to control the film thickness.     Food quality profile of pounded yam and implications for yam breeding

    Open Access ArticleBACKGROUND Assessment of the key preferred quality traits in pounded yam, a popularly consumed yam food product in West Africa, is often done through sensory evaluation. Such assessment is time-consuming and results may be biased. Therefore, there is a need to develop objective, high-throughput methods to predict the quality of consumer-preferred traits in pounded yam. This study focused on how key quality traits in pounded yam proposed to yam breeders were determined, measured by biophysical and biochemical methods, in order to shorten the breeding selection cycle through adoption of these methods by breeders. RESULTS Consumer tests and sensory quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) validated that preferred priority quality traits in pounded yam were related to textural quality (smooth, stretchable, moldable, slightly sticky and moderately hard) and color (white, cream or light yellow). There were significant correlations between sensory textural quality attributes cohesiveness/moldability, hardness, and adhesiveness/stickiness, with textural quality measurements from instrumental texture profile analysis (TPA). Color measurement parameters (L*, a*, and b*) with chromameter agreed with that of sensory evaluation and can replace the sensory panel approach. The smoothness (R2 = 1.00), stickiness (R2 = 1.00), stretchability (R2 = 1.00), hardness (R2 = 0.99), and moldability (R2 = 0.53) of pounded yam samples can be predicted by the starch, amylose, and protein contents of yam tubers estimated by near-infrared spectroscopy. CONCLUSION TPA and Hunter colorimeter can be used as medium-high throughput methods to evaluate the textural quality and color of pounded yam in place of the sensory panelists
