Direct stimulation of the retina by the method of virtual-quanta for heavy cosmic-ray nuclei

The contribution to the frequency of visual sensations induced in the dark-adapted eye by the virtual photon field was calculated, this field is associated with the heavy nuclei that exist in space beyond the geomagnetic field. In order to determine the probability that the virtual photon field induces a light flash, only the portion of the virtual photon spectrum that corresponds to the known frequency dependence of the sensitivity of human rods to visible light was utilized. The results can be expressed as a curve of the mean frequency of light flashes induced by the absorption of at least R virtual photons versus the threshold number R. The contribution to the light flash frequency from the virtual photon field of heavy cosmic ray nuclei is smaller than that from Cerenkov photons. The flux and energy spectra of galactic cosmic ray nuclei helium to iron were used

An experimental study of adsorption interference in binary mixtures flowing through activated carbon

    Get PDF
The isothermal transmission through activated carbon adsorber beds at 25 C of acetaldehyde-propane and acetylene-ethane mixtures in a helium carrier gas was measured. The inlet concentration of each component was in the range between 10 ppm and 500 ppm. The constant inlet volumetric flow rate was controlled at 200 cc (STP)/min in the acetaldehyde-propane experiments and at 50 cc (STP)/min in the acetaldehyde-ethane experiments. Comparison of experimental results with the corresponding single-component experiments under similar conditions reveals interference phenomena between the components of the mixtures as evidenced by changes in both the adsorption capacity and the dispersion number. Propane was found to displace acetaldehyde from the adsorbed state. The outlet concentration profiles of propane in the binary mixtures tend to become more diffuse than the corresponding concentration profiles of the one-component experiments. Similar features were observed with mixtures of acetylene and ethane; however, the displacement of acetylene by ethane is less pronounced

A Firm Level Framework for Electronic Commerce: An Information Systems Perspective

    Get PDF
Many firms do not have their business plans and information systems plans in place for embarking on electronic commerce. A firm level framework for electronic commerce will help firms to plan and align their ECIS (Electronic Commerce Information Systems) to business and information systems strategies. This paper develops such a framework. The four components of the framework are information architecture, business processes, choice of technology applications, and customer focus. A brief discussion on the significance of these components to electronic commerce is include

Web-Based Training: A case study on the development of an Intranet based training course

    Get PDF
Multimedia and hypermedia applications have been successfully used for user training. This paper addresses the question whether the World Wide Web can be used to deliver web-based training of similar quality compared to traditional hypermedia learning systems. The development of a web-based training course for a major company is described, and the lessons learned from that project are discussed

Maximum Azimuthal Anisotropy of Neutrons from Nb-Nb Collisions at 400 AMeV and the Nuclear Equation of State

    Get PDF
We measured the first azimuthal distributions of triple--differential cross sections of neutrons emitted in heavy-ion collisions, and compared their maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratios with Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (BUU) calculations with a momentum-dependent interaction. The BUU calculations agree with the triple- and double-differential cross sections for positive rapidity neutrons emitted at polar angles from 7 to 27 degrees; however, the maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratio for these free neutrons is insensitive to the size of the nuclear incompressibility modulus K characterizing the nuclear matter equation of state.Comment: Typeset using ReVTeX, with 3 ps figs., uuencoded and appende

An Analysis of Electronic Auctions as a Mechanism for Supply Chain Management

    Get PDF
The proliferation of electronic commerce venues on the Web has dramatically expanded the reach of businesses. It is now much easier for a firm to deal directly not only with its customers, but with its entire supply chain. During the past several years, business-to-business transactions have become simpler, faster, and more accurate since the advent of electronic data interchange (EDI) and the explosive growth of information technology. The Internet is introducing yet another way for businesses to electronically conduct transactions in ways that are even more farreaching. Although this has led to some disintermediation at the brick-and-mortar level, new cybermediaries are being created to facilitate and validate the new business relationships. Internet auctions are being touted as one solution for at least some aspects of supply chain management. Attention so far has been primarily focused on the application of the technology. Although the technology facilitates the transactions and interactions of participants by increasing connectivity, other issues are also important in applying electronic auctions to supply chain management. The purpose of this paper is to identify and explore interdisciplinary issues potentially affecting the outcome of electronic business-to-business auctions in order to increase the awareness of Information Systems managers and auction participants so that effective implementation strategies can be developed
