Challenges faced by grandparents caring for AIDS orphans in Koster, North West Province of South Africa

Caring for orphans who have lost their parents due to AIDS, and some of whom are infected, is an enormous challenge. This immense responsibility often resides with the grandparents, who are in most cases sickly and not financially capable to undertake the task. The objectives of this study were to explore and describe challenges faced by such grandparents and their needs while caring for AIDS orphans in Koster, North West province, South Africa. Maslow’s theory of human needs was used as a theoretical framework to guide the study. A qualitative approach with an explorative and descriptive design was used. Grandparents who cared for AIDS orphans and were assisted by non-governmental organisations were purposively selected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants and thematic analysis was done to interpret the data. The findings revealed that the grandparents faced biophysical, socio-economic and psychosocial challenges and these impacted on their emotions; however, they indicated different coping strategies which were available to them. The participants highlighted that their main priority, as a need, was assistance with food supply for themselves and the orphans. The study concluded that the focus in attempting to meet the grandparents’ needs should not only be the basic order needs in Maslow’s hierarchy but all the other orders, as they have a great impact on both the grandparent and the AIDS orphan.Department of HE and Training approved lis

INTEGRATING OF LOCAL CULTURE-BASED INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING SPEAKING CLASSROOM AT THE THIRD SEMESTER STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITAS TOMAKAKA MAMUJU

This study aims to explore an integration of local culture in teaching speaking for enabling students to speak  English practiced in EFL classroom. It employs a descriptive study using a purposive sampling technique and taking 76 respondents from EFL university students. The questionnaire and interview were used to collect data on the perception of EFL university students on the integration of local culture in the process of learning, and observation was applied to gain the data on the EFL students’ interaction on integrating local culture-based instruction. The result of the study shows that students' speaking on the integration of local culture-based instruction in teaching speaking classroom in Indonesian EFL classroom fall into 3 categories:(1) highly understanding of local culture (HULC); (2) moderately understanding of local culture (MULC); (3) low understanding of local culture (LULC). This research is expected to be a reference for teachers’ professional development especially teachers’ capacity in teaching speaking classes

Tropical Krichever construction for the non-periodic box and ball system

A solution for an initial value problem of the box and ball system is constructed from a solution of the periodic box and ball system. The construction is done through a specific limiting process based on the theory of tropical geometry. This method gives a tropical analogue of the Krichever construction, which is an algebro-geometric method to construct exact solutions to integrable systems, for the non-periodic system.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

Implementasi Lean Sigma Untuk Penurunan Nilai Cost of Poor Quality Kain Ekspor Kelas a (Studi Kasus : Departemen Finishing PT Mertex Indonesia)

Departemen Finishing PT Mertex Indonesia bertugas mengolah kain mentah menjadi produk kain jadi. Dalam menjalankan produksinya, Departemen Finishing masih mengalami pemborosan. Pemborosan (waste) sebagai internal failure menyebabkan cost of poor quality yang membuat Perusahaan kehilangan kesempatan untuk mendapatkan keuntungan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah agar Perusahaan dapat meningkatkan kualitas proses produksi dan menurunkan nilai cost of poor quality dengan menggunakan pendekatan lean sigma. Tahap awal dalam penelitian adalah mengidentifikasi alur proses produksi dan menggambarkan hasilnya melalui value stream mapping (VSM). Kemudian melakukan klasifikasi aktivitas dan melakukan identifikasi waste. Jenis waste yang dipertimbangkan dalam penelitian ini adalah seven waste. Setelah itu dicari nilai cost of poor quality (COPQ) dari masing-masing waste untuk mendapatkan waste berpengaruh berdasarkan nilai COPQ yang terbesar. Setelah itu dicari akar penyebab permasalahan dengan root cause analysis (RCA) dan prioritas waste yang harus diperbaiki dengan failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA). Dari alternatif perbaikan dipilih yang terbaik menggunakan value based management berdasarkan nilai value yang tertinggi. Melalui konsep value based management didapatkan alternatif perbaikan terpilih yaitu mengganti proses pengemasan manual dengan proses pengemasan otomatis dengan membeli mesin pengemas otomatis, menjaga kestabilan rolling mesin, melakukan preventive maintenance secara teratur dan melakukan pemasangan expander roll pada roll mesin. Setelah dilakukan rekomendasi perbaikan diharapkan nilai sigma dapat meningkat dan cost of poor quality dapat menurun

Pelatihan Pembuatan Aplikasi E-raport dengan Menggunakan Microsoft Office Excel Bagi Guru-guru SD di Wilayah Insana Fafinesu

The activity of filling in school data, student data, and student final grades in report card at elementary schools in the Insana Fafinesu District, Timor Tengah Utara Regency has been carried out in handwriting (conventional), which have some constraints such as taking a long time to processing grades, has a tendency to miscalculation if the student report card is lost or damaged, it does not have documentation/ back-up documents. For teachers who have sloppy handwriting, it will be difficult for a parent to read. One software that can be used in making student report cards is Microsoft Office Excel. This software is easy to understand and can overcome problems in making student report cards such as the length of time for processing grades, the tendency of grade processing error, difficulties in reading teacher writing by parents, and overcoming problems with documentation/backup documents. This service activity aims to provide training in making e-report card applications using Microsoft Excel for elementary school teachers in the Insana Fafinesu area, Timor Tengah Utara Regency. The methods used in this activity are workshops and ongoing mentoring. As a result, teachers better understand the functions in Microsoft Excel that are useful in the process of filling out student report cards, each teacher succeeds in making their own e-reports, and they agree that e-reports with Microsoft Excel are more efficient and effective than filling out report cards manually (conventional) and will use e-reports in their respective schools. Application of graph theory and webster method in traffic light settings at the tulip intersection in kefamenanu city

The traffic light settings at several road intersections in Timor Tengah Utara Regency have not been regulated, taking into account the width of the road and the volume of vehicles. One of the intersections in question is the Eltari–Sonbay–L. Lake intersection road (Tulip intersection). At this intersection, traffic jams often occur because traffic light settings are not optimal, so it is necessary to have traffic regulations that pay attention to road width and vehicle volume. This research aims to find out how to regulate the duration of traffic lights using graph theory and the Webster method. This research is applied research. The data used is primary data, which includes road geometry and traffic volume data. The results of calculations using a compatible graph and the Webster method obtained two-time phases. Phase 1 for the Eltari road section (north and south) has a green light duration of 22 seconds, yellow 3 seconds, and red 27 seconds. Meanwhile, Phase 2 for Sonbay Road and L. Lake Road has a green, yellow, and red-light duration of 23 seconds, 3 seconds, and 26 seconds, respectively. These results look more optimal compared to the current ones, which only consist of one-time phase

Quantitative Analysis of Curing Mechanisms of Epoxy Resin by Mid- and Near- Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy

This article informs the essence of major work done by a number of researchers on the analysis of two-step curing mechanism of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin in presence of amine curing agents using near- and mid-IR technology. Various peaks used as a marker for resin formation are discussed and their implementation is comprehensively studied. In addition to this, a wide range of information about the importance of reference peaks in both near-IR (NIR) and mid-IR (MIR) regions are congregated and their accuracy is audited.
