Bibliography: pages 195-200.This thesis will be concerned with trying to develop an understanding of what the difficulties have been in bringing about improvements to the working environment in manufacturing. The role of labour will be of central concern, but an attempt will also be made to analyse the role of the other participants in the regulatory process, namely, the state and employers. The period with which the thesis is concerned is the 1980s. The area is clearly a very broad one and no claims will be made to providing a comprehensive study. Rather, it is hoped that the present study will provide some new data and some original insights into the regulatory process which will provoke further discussion and research in the field of occupational health and safety in South Africa

Who could be considered a legitimate representative of South Africa’s working class, and even who constituted this class, was bitterly contested during the twentieth century. This chapter examines the struggles for international recognition by the rival constituents of South Africa’s labour movement, which was sharply divided along racial and ideological lines. Initially, the International Labour Organization and other similar bodies formed links with the white-dominated labour movement, which regarded itself as the legitimate representative of all workers in South Africa. This position was successfully contested by emerging black African trade unions who themselves, in the face of fierce repression, competed for financial support made available by various sections of the international labour movement

Abstract: This paper reports on research that involved the analysis of 873 Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) arbitration awards sampled from unfair dismissal and unfair labour practice cases for the years 2003 to 2005. The sample of awards was selected in proportion to the case load of each of the Provincial offices of the CCMA. This project follows an earlier study undertaken on the basis of the CCMA’s Case Management System and attempts, in part, to test the availability of information to assess the operation of the CCMA as a dispute resolution institution. Descriptive findings are presented in table format for each of the questions contained in the instrument that was used to capture information from the arbitration awards.South Africa: arbritation awards, Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration
