Aging, Emotion, Attention, and Binding in the Taboo Stroop Task: Data and Theories.
How does aging impact relations between emotion, memory, and attention? To address this question, young and older adults named the font colors of taboo and neutral words, some of which recurred in the same font color or screen location throughout two color-naming experiments. The results indicated longer color-naming response times (RTs) for taboo than neutral base-words (taboo Stroop interference); better incidental recognition of colors and locations consistently associated with taboo versus neutral words (taboo context-memory enhancement); and greater speed-up in color-naming RTs with repetition of color-consistent than color-inconsistent taboo words, but no analogous speed-up with repetition of location-consistent or location-inconsistent taboo words (the consistency type by repetition interaction for taboo words). All three phenomena remained constant with aging, consistent with the transmission deficit hypothesis and binding theory, where familiar emotional words trigger age-invariant reactions for prioritizing the binding of contextual features to the source of emotion. Binding theory also accurately predicted the interaction between consistency type and repetition for taboo words. However, one or more aspects of these phenomena failed to support the inhibition deficit hypothesis, resource capacity theory, or socio-emotional selectivity theory. We conclude that binding theory warrants further test in a range of paradigms, and that relations between aging and emotion, memory, and attention may depend on whether the task and stimuli trigger fast-reaction, involuntary binding processes, as in the taboo Stroop paradigm
Community Detection as an Inference Problem
We express community detection as an inference problem of determining the
most likely arrangement of communities. We then apply belief propagation and
mean-field theory to this problem, and show that this leads to fast, accurate

Breathers in the weakly coupled topological discrete sine-Gordon system
Existence of breather (spatially localized, time periodic, oscillatory)
solutions of the topological discrete sine-Gordon (TDSG) system, in the regime
of weak coupling, is proved. The novelty of this result is that, unlike the
systems previously considered in studies of discrete breathers, the TDSG system
does not decouple into independent oscillator units in the weak coupling limit.
The results of a systematic numerical study of these breathers are presented,
including breather initial profiles and a portrait of their domain of existence
in the frequency-coupling parameter space. It is found that the breathers are
uniformly qualitatively different from those found in conventional spatially

Polarization--universal rejection filtering by ambichiral structures made of indefinite dielectric--magnetic materials
An ambichiral structure comprising sheets of an anisotropic dielectric
material rejects normally incident plane waves of one circular polarization
(CP) state but not of the other CP state, in its fundamental Bragg regime.
However, if the same structure is made of an dielectric--magnetic material with
indefinite permittivity and permeability dyadics, it may function as a
polarization--universal rejection filter because two of the four planewave
components of the electromagnetic field phasors in each sheet are of the
positive--phase--velocity type and two are of the negative--phase--velocity

Optimal and Efficient Decoding of Concatenated Quantum Block Codes
We consider the problem of optimally decoding a quantum error correction code
-- that is to find the optimal recovery procedure given the outcomes of partial
"check" measurements on the system. In general, this problem is NP-hard.
However, we demonstrate that for concatenated block codes, the optimal decoding
can be efficiently computed using a message passing algorithm. We compare the
performance of the message passing algorithm to that of the widespread
blockwise hard decoding technique. Our Monte Carlo results using the 5 qubit
and Steane's code on a depolarizing channel demonstrate significant advantages
of the message passing algorithms in two respects. 1) Optimal decoding
increases by as much as 94% the error threshold below which the error
correction procedure can be used to reliably send information over a noisy
channel. 2) For noise levels below these thresholds, the probability of error
after optimal decoding is suppressed at a significantly higher rate, leading to
a substantial reduction of the error correction overhead.Comment: Published versio
Warren McCulloch and the British cyberneticians
Warren McCulloch was a significant influence on a number of British cyberneticians, as some British pioneers in this area were on him. He interacted regularly with most of the main figures on the British cybernetics scene, forming close friendships and collaborations with several, as well as mentoring others. Many of these interactions stemmed from a 1949 visit to London during which he gave the opening talk at the inaugural meeting of the Ratio Club, a gathering of brilliant, mainly young, British scientists working in areas related to cybernetics. Nonstatistical dynamics on potentials exhibiting reaction path bifurcations and valley-ridge inflection points
We study reaction dynamics on a model potential energy surface exhibiting
post-transition state bifurcation in the vicinity of a valley ridge inflection
point. We compute fractional yields of products reached after the VRI region is
traversed, both with and without dissipation. It is found that apparently minor
variations in the potential lead to significant changes in the reaction
dynamics. Moreover, when dissipative effects are incorporated, the product
ratio depends in a complicated and highly non-monotonic fashion on the
dissipation parameter. Dynamics in the vicinity of the VRI point itself play
essentially no role in determining the product ratio, except in the highly
