Development of a portable precision landing system
A portable, tactical approach guidance (PTAG) system, based on a novel, X-band, precision approach concept, was developed and flight tested as a part of NASA's Rotorcraft All-Weather Operations Research Program. The system is based on state-of-the-art X-band technology and digital processing techniques. The PTAG airborne hardware consists of an X-band receiver and a small microprocessor installed in conjunction with the aircraft instrument landing system (ILS) receiver. The microprocessor analyzes the X-band, PTAG pulses and outputs ILS compatible localizer and glide slope signals. The ground stations are inexpensive, portable units, each weighing less than 85 lb, including battery, that can be quickly deployed at a landing site. Results from the flight test program show that PTAG has a significant potential for providing tactical aircraft with low cost, portable, precision instrument approach capability
Statistics of real eigenvalues in Ginibre's Ensemble of random real matrices
The integrable structure of Ginibre's orthogonal ensemble of random matrices is looked at through the prism of the probability pn,k to find exactly k real eigenvalues in the spectrum of an n×n real asymmetric Gaussian random matrix. The exact solution for the probability function pn,k is presented, and its remarkable connection to the theory of symmetric functions is revealed. An extension of the Dyson integration theorem is a key ingredient of the theory presented
Development and flight test of a helicopter, X-band, portable precision landing system concept
A beacon landing system (BLS) is being developed and flight tested as a part of NASA's Rotorcraft All-Weather Operations Research Program. The system is based on state-of-of-the-art X-band radar technology and digital processing techniques. The bLS airborne hardware consists of an X-band receiver and a small micropreocessor, installed in conjunction wht the aircraft instrument landing system (ILS) receiver. The microprocessor analyzes the X-band, BLS pulses and outputs ILS-compatible localizer and glide slope signals. Range information is obtained using an on-board weather/mapping radar in conjunction with the BLS. The ground station is an inexpensive, portable unit; it weighs less than 70 lb and can be quickly deployed at a landing site. Results from the flight-test program show that the BLS has a significant potential for providing rotorcaraft with low-cost, precision instrument approach capability in remote areas
Correlations in Two-Dimensional Vortex Liquids
We report on a high temperature perturbation expansion study of the
superfluid-density spatial correlation function of a Ginzburg-Landau-model
superconducting film in a magnetic field. We have derived a closed form which
expresses the contribution to the correlation function from each graph of the
perturbation theory in terms of the number of Euler paths around appropriate
subgraphs. We have enumerated all graphs appearing out to 10-th order in the
expansion and have evaluated their contributions to the correlation function.
Low temperature correlation functions, obtained using Pad\'{e} approximants,
are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results and show that the
vortex-liquid becomes strongly correlated at temperatures well above the vortex
solidification temperature.Comment: 18 pages (RevTeX 3.0) and 4 figures, available upon request,

Cauchy's residue theorem for a class of real valued functions
Let be an interval in and let be a real valued
function defined at the endpoints of and with a certain number of
discontinuities within . Having assumed to be differentiable on a
set to the derivative , where is a subset of at whose points can take values or not be defined at all,
we adopt the convention that and are equal to 0 at all points of
and show that %, where
denotes the total value of the \textit{% Kurzweil-Henstock} integral. The
paper ends with a few examples that illustrate the theory.Comment: 6 page
Exact spin dynamics of the 1/r^2 supersymmetric t-J model in a magnetic field
The dynamical spin structure factor S^{zz}(Q,omega) in the small momentum
region is derived analytically for the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model
with 1/r^2 interaction. Strong spin-charge separation is found in the spin
dynamics. The structure factor S^{zz}(Q,omega) with a given spin polarization
does not depend on the electron density in the small momentum region. In the
thermodynamic limit, only two spinons and one antispinon (magnon) contribute to
S^{zz}(Q,omega). These results are derived via solution of the SU(2,1)
Sutherland model in the strong coupling limit.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in J.Phys.
Magnetic Anisotropy in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets
We show that the sign of magnetic anisotropy energy in quantum Hall
ferromagnets is determined by a competition between electrostatic and exchange
energies. Easy-axis ferromagnets tend to occur when Landau levels whose states
have similar spatial profiles cross. We report measurements of integer QHE
evolution with magnetic-field tilt. Reentrant behavior observed for the QHE at high tilt angles is attributed to easy-axis anisotropy. This
interpretation is supported by a detailed calculation of the magnetic
anisotropy energy.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
