Radioactive isotope analyses of skeletal materials in forensic science: a review of uses and potential uses
A review of information that can be provided from measurements made on natural and anthropogenic radionuclide activities in human skeletal remains has been undertaken to establish what reliable information of forensic anthropological use can be obtained regarding years of birth and death (and hence post-mortem interval (PMI)). Of the anthropogenic radionuclides that have entered the environment, radiocarbon (14C) can currently be used to generate the most useful and reliable information. Measurements on single bones can indicate whether or not the person died during the nuclear era, while recent research suggests that measurements on trabecular bone may, depending on the chronological age of the remains, provide estimates of year of death and hence PMI. Additionally, 14C measurements made on different components of single teeth or on teeth formed at different times can provide estimates of year of birth to within 1â2Â years of the true year. Of the other anthropogenic radionuclides, 90Sr shows some promise but there are problems of (1) variations in activities between individuals, (2) relatively large analytical uncertainties and (3) diagenetic contamination. With respect to natural series radionuclides, it is concluded that there is no convincing evidence that 210Pb dating can be used in a rigorous, quantitative fashion to establish a PMI. Similarly, for daughter/parent pairs such as 210Po/210Pb (from the 238U decay series) and 228Th/228Ra (from the 232Th decay series), the combination of analytical uncertainty and uncertainty in activity ratios at the point of death inevitably results in major uncertainty in any estimate of PMI. However, observation of the disequilibrium between these two daughter/parent pairs could potentially be used in a qualitative way to support other forensic evidence
Temporal trend in the transfer of Sellafield-derived 14C into different size fractions of the carbonate component of NE Irish Sea sediment
From 1994 onwards, 14C discharges from the Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant have been made largely to the Northeast Irish Sea. They represent the largest contributor to UK and European populations of the collective dose commitment derived from the entire nuclear industry discharges. Consequently, it is important to understand the long-term fate of 14C in the marine environment. Research undertaken in 2000 suggested that the carbonate component of Northeast Irish Sea sediments would increase in 14C activity as mollusc shells, which have become enriched in Sellafield-derived 14C, are broken down by physical processes including wave action and incorporated into intertidal and sub-tidal sediments. The current study, undertaken in 2011, tested this hypothesis. The results demonstrate significant increases in 14C enrichments found in whole mussel shells compared to those measured in 2000. Additionally, in 2000, there was an enrichment above ambient background within only the largest size fraction (>500 ÎŒm) of the intertidal inorganic sediment at Nethertown and Flimby (north of Sellafield). In comparison, the present study has demonstrated 14C enrichments above ambient background in most size fractions at sites up to 40 km north of Sellafield, confirming the hypothesis set out more than a decade ago
Not all surveillance data are created equalâA multiâmethod dynamic occupancy approach to determine rabies elimination from wildlife
1. A necessary component of elimination programmes for wildlife disease is effective surveillance. The ability to distinguish between disease freedom and nonâdetection can mean the difference between a successful elimination campaign and new epizootics. Understanding the contribution of different surveillance methods helps to optimize and better allocate effort and develop more effective surveillance programmes.
2. We evaluated the probability of rabies virus elimination (disease freedom) in an enzootic area with active management using dynamic occupancy modelling of 10 years of raccoon rabies virus (RABV) surveillance data (2006â2015) collected from three states in the eastern United States. We estimated detection probability of RABV cases for each surveillance method (e.g. strange acting reports, roadkill, surveillanceâtrapped animals, nuisance animals and public health samples) used by the USDA National Rabies Management Program.
3. Strange acting, found dead and public health animals were the most likely to detect RABV when it was present, and generally detectability was higher in fallâ winter compared to springâsummer. Found dead animals in fallâwinter had the highest detection at 0.33 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.48). Nuisance animals had the lowest detection probabilities (~0.02).
4. Areas with oral rabies vaccination (ORV) management had reduced occurrence probability compared to enzootic areas without ORV management. RABV occurrence was positively associated with deciduous and mixed forests and medium to high developed areas, which are also areas with higher raccoon (Procyon lotor) densities. By combining occupancy and detection estimates we can create a probability of elimination surface that can be updated seasonally to provide guidance on areas managed for wildlife disease.
5. Synthesis and applications. Wildlife disease surveillance is often comprised of a combination of targeted and convenienceâbased methods. Using a multiâmethod analytical approach allows us to compare the relative strengths of these methods, providing guidance on resource allocation for surveillance actions. Applying this multiâmethod approach in conjunction with dynamic occupancy analyses better informs management decisions by understanding ecological drivers of disease occurrence
Solitons in a Baby-Skyrme model with invariance under area preserving diffeomorphisms
We study the properties of soliton solutions in an analog of the Skyrme model
in 2+1 dimensions whose Lagrangian contains the Skyrme term and the mass term,
but no usual kinetic term. The model admits a symmetry under area preserving
diffeomorphisms. We solve the dynamical equations of motion analytically for
the case of spinning isolated baryon type solitons. We take fully into account
the induced deformation of the spinning Skyrmions and the consequent
modification of its moment of inertia to give an analytical example of related
numerical behaviour found by Piette et al.. We solve the equations of motion
also for the case of an infinite, open string, and a closed annular string. In
each case, the solitons are of finite extent, so called "compactons", being
exactly the vacuum outside a compact region. We end with indications on the
scattering of baby-Skyrmions, as well as some considerations as the properties

Linear Field Dependence of the Normal-State In-Plane Magnetoresistance of Sr2RuO4
The transverse and longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistances in the normal
state of superconducting Sr2RuO4 single crystals have been measured. At low
temperatures, both of them were found to be positive with a linear
magnetic-field dependence above a threshold field, a result not expected from
electronic band theory. We argue that such behavior is a manifestation of a
novel coherent state characterized by a spin pseudo gap in the quasi-particle
excitation spectrum in Sr2RuO4.Comment: 4 pages + 5 figure
Sensory environment on health-related outcomes of hospital patients
Background: Hospital environments have recently received renewed interest, with considerable investments into building and renovating healthcare estates. Understanding the effectiveness of environmental interventions is important for resource utilisation and providing quality care. Objectives: To assess the effect of hospital environments on adult patient health-related outcomes. Search methods: We searched: the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (last searched January 2006); MEDLINE (1902 to December 2006); EMBASE (January 1980 to February 2006); 14 other databases covering health, psychology, and the built environment; reference lists; and organisation websites. This review is currently being updated (MEDLINE last search October 2010), see Studies awaiting classification. Selection criteria: Randomised and non-randomised controlled trials, controlled before-and-after studies, and interrupted times series of environmental interventions in adult hospital patients reporting health-related outcomes. Data collection and analysis: Two review authors independently undertook data extraction and 'Risk of bias' assessment. We contacted authors to obtain missing information. For continuous variables, we calculated a mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for each study. For dichotomous variables, we calculated a risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). When appropriate, we used a random-effects model of meta-analysis. Heterogeneity was explored qualitatively and quantitatively based on risk of bias, case mix, hospital visit characteristics, and country of study. Main results: Overall, 102 studies have been included in this review. Interventions explored were: 'positive distracters', to include aromas (two studies), audiovisual distractions (five studies), decoration (one study), and music (85 studies); interventions to reduce environmental stressors through physical changes, to include air quality (three studies), bedroom type (one study), flooring (two studies), furniture and furnishings (one study), lighting (one study), and temperature (one study); and multifaceted interventions (two studies). We did not find any studies meeting the inclusion criteria to evaluate: art, access to nature for example, through hospital gardens, atriums, flowers, and plants, ceilings, interventions to reduce hospital noise, patient controls, technologies, way-finding aids, or the provision of windows. Overall, it appears that music may improve patient-reported outcomes such as anxiety; however, the benefit for physiological outcomes, and medication consumption has less support. There are few studies to support or refute the implementation of physical changes, and except for air quality, the included studies demonstrated that physical changes to the hospital environment at least did no harm. Authors' conclusions: Music may improve patient-reported outcomes in certain circumstances, so support for this relatively inexpensive intervention may be justified. For some environmental interventions, well designed research studies have yet to take place
Heavy-Light Semileptonic Decays in Staggered Chiral Perturbation Theory
We calculate the form factors for the semileptonic decays of heavy-light
pseudoscalar mesons in partially quenched staggered chiral perturbation theory
(\schpt), working to leading order in , where is the heavy quark
mass. We take the light meson in the final state to be a pseudoscalar
corresponding to the exact chiral symmetry of staggered quarks. The treatment
assumes the validity of the standard prescription for representing the
staggered ``fourth root trick'' within \schpt by insertions of factors of 1/4
for each sea quark loop. Our calculation is based on an existing partially
quenched continuum chiral perturbation theory calculation with degenerate sea
quarks by Becirevic, Prelovsek and Zupan, which we generalize to the staggered
(and non-degenerate) case. As a by-product, we obtain the continuum partially
quenched results with non-degenerate sea quarks. We analyze the effects of
non-leading chiral terms, and find a relation among the coefficients governing
the analytic valence mass dependence at this order. Our results are useful in
analyzing lattice computations of form factors and when the

Antiferromagnetic Order in Disorder-Induced Insulating Phase of SrRu_{1-x}Mn_xO_3 (0.4<x<0.6)
We have performed the powder neutron diffraction measurements on the solid
solutions of SrRu_{1-x}Mn_xO_3, and found that the itinerant ferromagnetic
order observed in pure SrRuO_3 changes into the C-type antiferromagnetic (AF)
order with nearly localized d electrons in the intermediate Mn concentration
between x=0.4 and 0.6. With increasing x, the AF moment is strongly enhanced
from 1.1 mB (x=0.4) to 2.6 mB (x=0.6), which is accompanied by the elongation
of the tetragonal c/a ratio. These results suggest that the substitution of Mn
for Ru suppresses the itinerant character of the d electrons, and induces the
superexchange interaction through the compression in the c plane. We have also
found that the magnetic and transport properties observed in our tetragonal
samples are quite similar to those of recently reported orthorhombic ones.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Nonmagnetic Insulating States near the Mott Transitions on Lattices with Geometrical Frustration and Implications for -(ET)Cu
We study phase diagrams of the Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular
lattices, which also represents a model for -type BEDT-TTF compounds.
In contrast with mean-field predictions, path-integral renormalization group
calculations show a universal presence of nonmagnetic insulator sandwitched by
antiferromagnetic insulator and paramagnetic metals. The nonmagnetic phase does
not show a simple translational symmetry breakings such as flux phases,
implying a genuine Mott insulator. We discuss possible relevance on the
nonmagnetic insulating phase found in -(ET)Cu.Comment: 4pages including 7 figure
