More about orbitally excited hadrons from lattice QCD
This is a second paper describing the calculation of spectroscopy for
orbitally excited states from lattice simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics.
New features include higher statistics for P-wave systems and first results for
the spectroscopy of D-wave mesons and baryons, for relatively heavy quark
masses. We parameterize the Coulomb gauge wave functions for P-wave and D-wave

Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions
In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass
2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the
search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the
field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in
perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of
parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in

Cryptosporidium, Enterocytozoon, and Cyclospora Infections in Pediatric and Adult Patients with Diarrhea in Tanzania.
Cryptosporidiosis, microsporidiosis, and cyclosporiasis were studied in four groups of Tanzanian inpatients: adults with AIDS-associated diarrhea, children with chronic diarrhea (of whom 23 of 59 were positive [+] for human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]), children with acute diarrhea (of whom 15 of 55 were HIV+), and HIV control children without diarrhea. Cryptosporidium was identified in specimens from 6/86 adults, 5/59 children with chronic diarrhea (3/5, HIV+), 7/55 children with acute diarrhea (0/7, HIV+), and 0/20 control children. Among children with acute diarrhea, 7/7 with cryptosporidiosis were malnourished, compared with 10/48 without cryptosporidiosis (P < .01). Enterocytozoon was identified in specimens from 3/86 adults, 2/59 children with chronic diarrhea (1 HIV+), 0/55 children with acute diarrhea, and 4/20 control children. All four controls were underweight (P < .01). Cyclospora was identified in specimens from one adult and one child with acute diarrhea (HIV-). Thus, Cryptosporidium was the most frequent and Cyclospora the least frequent pathogen identified. Cryptosporidium and Enterocytozoon were associated with malnutrition. Asymptomatic fecal shedding of Enterocytozoon in otherwise healthy, HIV children has not been described previously
Superconducting Magnetization above the Irreversibility Line in Tl2Ba2CuO6
Piezolever torque magnetometry has been used to measure the magnetization of
superconducting Tl2Ba2CuO6. Three crystals with different levels of oxygen
overdoping were investigated in magnetic fields up to 10 Tesla. In all cases,
the magnetization above the irreversibility line was found to depart from the
behaviour M ~ ln(Hc2/H) of a simple London-like vortex liquid. In particular,
for a strongly overdoped (Tc = 15K) crystal, the remnant superconducting order
above the irreversibility line is characterized by a linear diamagnetic
response (M ~ H) that persists well above Tc and also up to the highest field

Diffusive and ballistic current spin-polarization in magnetron-sputtered L1o-ordered epitaxial FePt
We report on the structural, magnetic, and electron transport properties of a
L1o-ordered epitaxial iron-platinum alloy layer fabricated by
magnetron-sputtering on a MgO(001) substrate. The film studied displayed a long
range chemical order parameter of S~0.90, and hence has a very strong
perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In the diffusive electron transport regime,
for temperatures ranging from 2 K to 258 K, we found hysteresis in the
magnetoresistance mainly due to electron scattering from magnetic domain walls.
At 2 K, we observed an overall domain wall magnetoresistance of about 0.5 %. By
evaluating the spin current asymmetry alpha = sigma_up / sigma_down, we were
able to estimate the diffusive spin current polarization. At all temperatures
ranging from 2 K to 258 K, we found a diffusive spin current polarization of >
80%. To study the ballistic transport regime, we have performed point-contact
Andreev-reflection measurements at 4.2 K. We obtained a value for the ballistic
current spin polarization of ~42% (which compares very well with that of a
polycrystalline thin film of elemental Fe). We attribute the discrepancy to a
difference in the characteristic scattering times for oppositely spin-polarized
electrons, such scattering times influencing the diffusive but not the
ballistic current spin polarization.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figure
Changing women's roles, changing environmental knowledges: evidence from Upper Egypt
The aim of this paper is to investigate the ways in which changing gender roles in a Bedouin community in Upper Egypt, brought about by settlement over the last 20 years on the shores of Lake Nasser, have impacted on the accumulation and development of indigenous environmental knowledges by Bedouin women. The research was carried out among four groups of Ababda Bedouin in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and involved in-depth monthly conversations carried out over a period of 12 months. The main conclusions of the study are that the women of the study area have had to develop new knowledges which, in some cases, are now different from those held by men because of the different economic circumstances in which many find themselves; that these knowledges are fluid, dynamic and ever-changing with their own internal dynamism; and that socially constructed notions of gender are vital in the development process, notions that are sensitive to both men's and women's interests and their interrelationships
Coherent and squeezed states of quantum Heisenberg algebras
Starting from deformed quantum Heisenberg Lie algebras some realizations are
given in terms of the usual creation and annihilation operators of the standard
harmonic oscillator. Then the associated algebra eigenstates are computed and
give rise to new classes of deformed coherent and squeezed states. They are
parametrized by deformed algebra parameters and suitable redefinitions of them
as paragrassmann numbers. Some properties of these deformed states also are

Forty years studying British politics : the decline of Anglo-America
The still present belief some 40 years ago that British politics was both exceptional and superior has been replaced by more theoretically sophisticated analyses based on a wider and more rigorously deployed range of research techniques, although historical analysis appropriately remains important. The American influence on the study of British politics has declined, but the European Union dimension has not been fully integrated. The study of interest groups has been in some respects a fading paradigm, but important questions related to democratic health have still to be addressed. Public administration has been supplanted by public policy, but economic policy remains under-studied. A key challenge for the future is the study of the management of expectations
Statistical Interparticle Potential between Two Anyons
The density matrix of a two-anyon system is evaluated and used to investigate
the "statistical interparticle potential" following the theory of Uhlenbeck.
The main purpose is to see how the statistical potential will depend on the
fractional statistical parameter . The result shows that the
statistical potential for a two-anyon system with is
always repulsive. For the system with , the potential is
repulsive at short distances and becomes attractive at long distances. It
remains only in the boson system () that the repulsive potential
arising from the exclusion principle can disappear and lead to an attractive
