    Cosmological Radiation Hydrodynamics with ENZO

    We describe an extension of the cosmological hydrodynamics code ENZO to include the self-consistent transport of ionizing radiation modeled in the flux-limited diffusion approximation. A novel feature of our algorithm is a coupled implicit solution of radiation transport, ionization kinetics, and gas photoheating, making the timestepping for this portion of the calculation resolution independent. The implicit system is coupled to the explicit cosmological hydrodynamics through operator splitting and solved with scalable multigrid methods.     Gold(I)-Catalysed Direct Thioetherifications Using Allylic Alcohols: an Experimental and Computational Study

    A gold(I)-catalysed direct thioetherification reaction between allylic alcohols and thiols is presented. The reaction is generally highly regioselective (S(N)2′). This dehydrative allylation procedure is very mild and atom economical, producing only water as the by-product and avoiding any unnecessary waste/steps associated with installing a leaving or activating group on the substrate. Computational studies are presented to gain insight into the mechanism of the reaction. Calculations indicate that the regioselectivity is under equilibrium control and is ultimately dictated by the thermodynamic stability of the products

    The blackgrass genome reveals patterns of non-parallel evolution of polygenic herbicide resistance

    Globally, weedy plants are a major constraint to sustainable crop production. Much of the success of weeds rests with their ability to rapidly adapt in the face of human-mediated management of agroecosystems. Alopecurus myosuroides (blackgrass) is a widespread and impactful weed affecting agriculture in Europe. Here we report a chromosome-scale genome assembly of blackgrass and use this reference genome to explore the genomic/genetic basis of non-target site herbicide resistance (NTSR). Based on our analysis of F2 seed families derived from two distinct blackgrass populations with the same NTSR phenotype, we demonstrate that the trait is polygenic and evolves from standing genetic variation. We present evidence that selection for NTSR has signatures of both parallel and non-parallel evolution. There are parallel and non-parallel changes at the transcriptional level of several stress- and defense-responsive gene families. At the genomic level, however, the genetic loci underpinning NTSR are different (non-parallel) between seed families. We speculate that variation in the number, regulation and function of stress- and defense-related gene families enable weedy species to rapidly evolve NTSR via exaptation of genes within large multi-functional gene families. These results provide novel insights into the potential for, and nature of plant adaptation in rapidly changing environments

    Endemic Babesiosis in Another Eastern State: New Jersey

    In the United States, most reported cases of babesiosis have been caused by Babesia microti and acquired in the northeast. Although three cases of babesiosis acquired in New Jersey were recently described by others, babesiosis has not been widely known to be endemic in New Jersey. We describe a case of babesiosis acquired in New Jersey in 1999 in an otherwise healthy 53-year-old woman who developed life-threatening disease. We also provide composite data on 40 cases of babesiosis acquired from 1993 through 2001 in New Jersey. The 40 cases include the one we describe, the three cases previously described, and 36 other cases reported to public health agencies. The 40 cases were acquired in eight (38.1%) of the 21 counties in the state. Babesiosis, a potentially serious zoonosis, is endemic in New Jersey and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with fever and hemolytic anemia, particularly in the spring, summer, and early fall

    Can Placement Test Score Predict Success for a First-semester Community College Student in Their First Online Course?

    This study examined the following question: What is the relationship, if any, between COMPASS placement scores and the student success in the first online course during the students first semester? Discriminant function analysis was used to examine the relationship.This study used existing data from new students, who took the COMPASS placement test, and were enrolled in an online course at community colleges in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington over 5 academic years from 2010 to 2015. Data collected from the participating community colleges included COMPASS placement test scores for reading, and writing, any of the four math sections, online course(s) attempted in the first semester, age, gender, course grade, and number of credits attempted during the student’s first semester.Statistically significant relationships were found between reading and writing COMPASS test scores and success in online humanities, natural science, and social science courses. For the math COMPASS scores, pre-algebra had a statistically significant relationship to success in online math courses and natural science courses. College algebra had a statistically significant relationship to success in an online natural science course. Prediction model results were just above and below 70% for each of the statistically significant relationships. The models included students who were predicted to be successful but were unsuccessful

    Impact of the 2003 to 2018 Population Salt Intake Reduction Program in England A Modeling Study

    The United Kingdom was among the first countries to introduce a salt reduction program in 2003 to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence risk. Despite its initial success, the program has stalled recently and is yet to achieve national and international targets. We used age- and sex-stratified salt intake of 19 to 64 years old participants in the National Diet and Nutrition Surveys 2000 to 2018 and a multistate life table model to assess the effects of the voluntary dietary salt reduction program on premature CVD, quality-adjusted survival, and health care and social care costs in England. The program reduced population-level salt intake from 9.38 grams/day per adult (SE, 0.16) in 2000 to 8.38 grams/day per adult (SE, 0.17) in 2018. Compared with a scenario of persistent 2000 levels, assuming that the population-level salt intake is maintained at 2018 values, by 2050, the program is projected to avoid 83 140 (95% CI, 73 710–84 520) premature ischemic heart disease (IHD) cases and 110 730 (95% CI, 98 390–112 260) premature strokes, generating 542 850 (95% CI, 529 020–556 850) extra quality-adjusted life-years and £1640 million (95% CI, £1570–£1660) health care cost savings for the adult population of England. We also projected the gains of achieving the World Health Organization target of 5 grams/day per adult by 2030, which by 2050 would avert further 87 870 (95% CI, 82 050–88 470) premature IHD cases, 126 010 (95% CI, 118 600–126 460) premature strokes and achieve £1260 million (95% CI, £1180–£1260) extra health care savings compared with maintaining 2018 levels. Strengthening the salt reduction program to achieve further reductions in population salt intake and CVD burden should be a high priority

    Knockout of proton-neutron pairs from 16^{16}O with electromagnetic probes

    After recent improvements to the Pavia model of two-nucleon knockout from 16^{16}O with electromagnetic probes the calculated cross sections are compared to experimental data from such reactions. Comparison with data from a measurement of the 16^{16}O(e,e′'pn) reaction show much better agreement between experiment and theory than was previously observed. In a comparison with recent data from a measurement of the 16^{16}O(γ\gamma,pn) reaction the model over-predicts the measured cross section at low missing momentum.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
