    We examine U.S. dairy farmer adopter characteristics and adoption rates of eleven technologies. Excepting grazing, technologies were generally adopted complementarily. Four were used on higher percentages of farms in 2005 than 2000.     During 1976 - 1977, the Sabah Malaria Control Programme carried out an extended field trial com­paring the residual effects of Summithiona, DDT and Malathionb against the primary vector of Sabah, An. balabacensis balabacensis Baisas in Kuala Penyu district. In the courseof this work and continuiting into 1978, a study was made of the conditions of increased malaria transmission in 3 areas four month after residual applications of Sumithion, DDT and Malathion.     New advances in MR-compatible bioartificial liver

    MR-compatible bioartificial liver (BAL) studies have been performed for 30 years and are reviewed. There are two types of study: (i) metabolism and drug studies using multinuclear MRS; primarily short-term (< 8 h) studies; (ii) the use of multinuclear MRS and MRI to noninvasively define the features and functions of BAL systems for long-term liver tissue engineering. In the latter, these systems often undergo not only modification of the perfusion system, but also the construction of MR radiofrequency probes around the bioreactor. We present novel MR-compatible BALs and the use of multinuclear MRS (13C, 19F, 31P) for the noninvasive monitoring of their growth, metabolism and viability, as well as 1H MRI methods for the determination of flow profiles, diffusion, cell distribution, quality assurance and bioreactor integrity. Finally, a simple flexible coil design and circuit, and life support system, are described that can make almost any BAL MR-compatible

    Concealed anterograde accessory pathway conduction during the induction of orthodromic reciprocating tachycardia

    AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine whether concealed anterograde accessory pathway conduction occurs during the induction of orthodromic tachycardia by an artrial extrastimulus (S2). Sixteen patients with an overt (n = 9) or concealed (n = 7) accessory pathway had inducible orthodromic tachycardia by S2during an atrial drive (S1) cycle length of 500 to 650 ms. A ventricular extrastimulus (S3) was introduced coincident with the His depolarization resulting from S2during the longest S1S2interval that reproducibly induced orthodromic tachycardia. The S1S3interval was decreased in 10 ms steps until S3reached ventricular refractoriness. Retrograde accessory pathway conduction of S3in the presence and absence of S2was compared at the same S1S3intervals.In the absence of S2there was retrograde accessory pathway conduction after S3in each patient. In the presence of S2, in patients with overt pre-excitation, retrograde accessory pathway conduction after S3was absent in one patient, prolonged in four patients and present only after long S1S3intervals in three patients. Only one patient had unchanged retrograde conduction regardless of the presence or absence of S2. In patients with a concealed accessory pathway, retrograde accessory pathway conduction after S3was absent in five patients and was prolonged in two. Thus, concealed anterograde accessory pathway conduction was present in 15 of 16 patients at the time of orthodromic tachycardia induction.In conclusion, concealed anterograde accessory pathway conduction occurs in a majority of patients with an overt or a concealed accessory pathway during induction of orthodromic tachycardia by an atrial extrastimulus. In some patients, the initiation of orthodromic tachycardia may depend on a critical interaction between the degree of concealed anterograde accessory pathway conduction and atrioventricular conduction delay after S2

    Land cover influence on catchment scale subsurface water storage investigated by multiple methods:Implications for UK Natural Flood Management

    Study region: United Kingdom (UK). Study Focus: ‘Natural flood management’ (NFM) schemes manipulating land use and other catchment features to control runoff are increasingly promoted across the UK. Catchment water storage and mixing processes influence runoff, but our understanding of the effects of land cover change on these processes is still limited. This study combined hydrometric, isotopic and geochemical measurements to investigate land cover versus potential topographic, soil and geological controls. It compared storage-discharge dynamics in nine nested catchments within a 67 km2 managed upland catchment in southern Scotland. Storage and mixing dynamics were characterised from hydrometric data using recession analysis and from isotopic data using mean transit time and young water fraction estimates. To give information on water sources, groundwater fraction was estimated from end member mixing analysis based on acid neutralising capacity.New hydrological insights: The analysis showed low but variable sub-catchment scale dynamic storage (16–200 mm), mean transit times (134–370 days) and groundwater fractions (0.20–0.52 of annual stream runoff). Soil hydraulic conductivity was most significantly positively correlated with storage and mixing measures, whilst percentage forest cover was inversely correlated. Any effects of forest cover on increasing catchment infiltration and storage are masked by soil hydraulic properties even in the most responsive catchments. This highlights the importance of understanding dominant controls on catchment storage when using tree planting as a flood management strategy

    p53 coordinates DNA repair with nucleotide synthesis by suppressing PFKFB3 expression and promoting the pentose phosphate pathway

    Activation of p53 in response to DNA damage is essential for tumor suppression. Although previous studies have emphasized the importance of p53-dependent cell cycle arrest and apoptosis for tumor suppression, recent studies have suggested that other areas of p53 regulation, such as metabolism and DNA damage repair (DDR), are also essential for p53-dependent tumor suppression. However, the intrinsic connections between p53-mediated DDR and metabolic regulation remain incompletely understood. Here, we present data suggesting that p53 promotes nucleotide biosynthesis in response to DNA damage by repressing the expression of the phosphofructokinase-2 (PFK2) isoform 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3), a rate-limiting enzyme that promotes glycolysis. PFKFB3 suppression increases the flux of glucose through the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) to increase nucleotide production, which results in more efficient DNA damage repair and increased cell survival. Interestingly, although p53-mediated suppression of PFKFB3 could increase the two major PPP products, NADPH and nucleotides, only nucleotide production was essential to promote DDR. By identifying the novel p53 target PFKFB3, we report an important mechanistic connection between p53-regulated metabolism and DDR, both of which play crucial roles in tumor suppression

    Generating contrast in hyperpolarized 13C MRI using ligand–receptor interactions

    We report the imaging of β-cyclodextrin/benzoic acid binding at 14T using hyperpolarized 13C magnetic resonance (MR). Benzoic acid was polarized using a dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) approach and combined with β-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution. As anticipated, decreases in the spin-lattice relaxation constant (T1) were observed with decreases in the ligand/ receptor ratio. The calculated log K was approximately 1.7, similar to previously reported binding constants. Hyperpolarized [1-13C] benzoic acid was used to interrogate solutions of variable β-cyclodextrin concentration, with the mixtures imaged at 14T using a 3D frequency-selective MR sequence. Differences in β-cyclodextrin concentration were easily visualized. These results suggest that hyperpolarized 13C MR could be used in vivo to determine the presence, and density of receptors for a given ligand-receptor pair
