Chinese Business English Teaching (BET) has developed more rapidly since China’s entering the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, traditional BET has its problems such as too much emphasis on business knowledge and professional vocabularies, which leads to learners’ lower practical language ability. There is a great necessity to solve the problems to meet the increasing demand for high quality business talents being able to work competently in the context of economic globalization. Based on sound language teaching theories and practices, this paper proposed an integrated approach to BET which aims to cultivate business expertise rather than just teach professional terms and knowledge. Get PDF
With the trend of economic globalization, more and more Chinese companies are using bilingual webpage as a new channel to penetrate into international markets. Online English corporate profiles play a very important role in the establishment of a company’s public image on international economic stages. However the quality of C-E translation is far from satisfactory as a result of ignoring target readers’ habit of expression and cultural differences, which has a negative impact on the penetration of Chinese products into international markets. Based on 24 authentic and reliable samples of corporate profiles, the paper analyzes the Chinese corporate profiles’ different features from that of companies of English speaking countries and classifies the translation errors into three categories: pragmatic translation errors, cultural translation errors and linguistic translation errors. Error samples and suggested versions are given to analyze the types and causes of errors. With the German functionalist approaches as its framework, the paper puts forward some strategies to avoid the translation errors and improve the C-E translation quality of Chinese corporate profiles.Key words: Functionalist approaches; Corporation profiles; Translation strategies; Skopostheori

Improving students’ speaking proficiency has always been a challenge for Chinese EFL teachers. With the traditional training mode students had low motivation to speak, insufficient exposure to authentic language input, inadequate teachers’ instruction on social strategies and no collaborative learning environment to find a partner to practice English with. Aiming at solving the above-mentioned problems of traditional training mode, the research proposes a multi-dimensional training mode with DV as its media, task as its center, cooperative learning as its form, campus English native speakers as its resources, textbooks as its content. Results of the empirical study prove the mode to be effective in increasing the students’ levels of speaking proficiency, social strategy and motivation.Key words: EFL teaching in Chinese context; Speaking proficiency training; Task-based learning; Cooperative learning; D

Expecting Floods: Firm Entry, Employment, and Aggregate Implications

Flood events and flood risk have been increasing in the past few decades and have important consequences on the economy. Using county-level and ZIP-code-level data during 1998–2018 from the U.S., we document that (1) increased flood risk has large negative impacts on firm entry, employment and output in the long run; (2) flood events reduce output in the short run while their impact on firm entry and employment is limited. Motivated by these findings, we construct a spatial equilibrium model to characterize how flood risk shapes firms’ location choices and workers’ employment, which we use to estimate the aggregate impact of increased flood risk on the economy. We find that flood risk reduced U.S. aggregate output by 0.52 percent in 2018, 80% of which stemmed from expectation effects and 20% from direct damages. We also apply our model to studying the distributional consequences and forecasting the impact of future changes in flood risk. Our results highlight the importance of considering the adjustment of firms and workers in response to risk in evaluating the consequences of natural disasters

ObjectiveThe study sought to explore the relationship between high psychological stress levels related to delivery and postpartum mental disorders.MethodsA total of 284 parturients were included in the study from July 2021 to January 2022. The stress level at 1 month postpartum was assessed by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). Parturients with an IES-R score ≤ 9 were included in the low psychological stress level group, and those with an IES-R score > 9 were included in the high psychological stress level group. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Union Physio-Psycho-Social Assessment Questionnaire (UPPSAQ-70), Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) were conducted at 42 ± 7 days postpartum to assess the mental health of parturients. The parturients’ mental health after birth was assessed by the EPDS, UPPSAQ-70, and SCL-90. Semi-structured diagnostic interviews were conducted at 42 ± 7 days postpartum by using the M.I.N.I.ResultsThe incidence rate of postpartum mental disorders was 20.42% (58/284), the incidence rates of postpartum depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder were 17.96% (51/284), 11.97% (34/284), 4.58% (13/284) and 1.41% (4/284), respectively, and the comorbidity rate was 58.62% (34/58). A history of mental disorders and pregnancy complications were risk factors for postpartum depression (p = 0.028, p = 0.040, respectively); a history of mental disorders, a lack of physical exercise, partner violence and pregnancy complications were risk factors for postpartum anxiety disorders (p = 0.003, p = 0.007, p = 0.031, p = 0.048, respectively); and the delivery of female infants was a risk factor for postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder (p = 0.022).The risk of postpartum depression, anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder was 9.125 times (95% CI = 3.900 ~ 21.349, p < 0.01), 7.310 times (95% CI = 2.588 ~ 20.649, p < 0.01) and 6.259 times (95% CI = 1.347 ~ 29.093, p < 0.01) higher in postpartum women with high psychological stress levels related to delivery than in those with low psychological stress levels, respectively.ConclusionThe incidence of postpartum mental disorders is high and has a positive correlation with the level of psychological stress. This may lead to a new perspective of the effect of psychological stress on postpartum mental disorders and attract more attention to other mental disorders in addition to postpartum depression

    Get PDF
A robust Pickering emulsion stabilized by lipase-immobilized alginate gel microparticles with a coating of silanized titania nanoparticles is developed for biphasic biocatalysis. The good recyclability and high stability of the proposed interfacial catalysis system have been verified, retaining about 90% of relative enzyme activity in 10 catalytic cycles with operation for 240 h. Meanwhile the Pickering emulsions remain stable during a storage time of one year. The green system can be widely applied to construct powerful platforms for enzyme or microorganism-driven interfacial catalysis

Construction and immunological characterization of CD40L or GM-CSF incorporated Hantaan virus like particle

    Get PDF
Infection of Hantaan virus (HTNV) usually causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). China has the worst epidemic incidence of HFRS as well as high fatality. Inactivated whole virus has been used for HFRS vaccination, however there are still problems such as safety concerns. CD40 ligand (CD40L) and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are well-known immune stimulating molecules that can enhance antigen presenting, lymphocytes activation and maturation, incorporation of CD40L and GM-CSF to the surface of virus like particles (VLPs) can greatly improve the vaccination effect. We constructed eukaryotic vectors expressing HTNV M segment and S segment, as well as vectors expressing HTNV M segment with CD40L or GM-CSF, our results showed successful production of CD40L or GM-CSF incorporated HTNV VLPs. In vitro stimulation with CD40L or GM-CSF anchored HTNV VLP showed enhanced activation of macrophages and DCs. CD40L/GM-CSF incorporated VLP can induce higher level of HTNV specific antibody and neutralizing antibody in mice. Immunized mice splenocytes showed higher ability of secreting IFN-Îł and IL-2, as well as enhancing CTL activity. These results suggest CD40L/GM-CSF incorporated VLP can serve as prospective vaccine candidate

As an extension of the previous research, this study aimed to comprehensively characterize the genome of Bacillus subtilis SNBS-3. Illumina second-generation sequencing technology and the third-generation high-throughput Pacbio sequencing platform were used for whole-genome sequencing of B. subtilis SNBS-3 isolated from traditional bean paste to obtain the key information of genome characteristics, gene function annotation and classification, phylogenetic evolution, and secondary metabolites. The results showed that the genome of SNBS-3 was a closed circular DNA of 4 076 387 bp in length containing 4 000 protein-coding genes. A total of 3 209, 2 824, 2 560, 147, 12 and 4 functional genes were annotated in the Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes (CAZyme), Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) and Virulence Factor Database (VFDB), respectively. Using the online software AntiSMASH and Bagel4, we found that it contained genes related to the synthesis of surfactin, mycosubtilin, plipastatin, bacilysin and bacillaene, as well as a complete gene cluster for the synthesis of the bacteriocin subtilosin A. Based on the results of antimicrobial test and proteinase K test, it was hypothesized that B. subtilis SNBS-3 had the ability to synthesize subtilosin A. In conclusion, the whole genome sequencing results of B. subtilis SNBS-3 show that it can produce a variety of bacteriostatic substances and thus have biocontrol potential. The results from this study provide a theoretical basis for further development and application of various bacteriostatic substances including the bacteriocin subtilosin A

A novel method of interference source direction-finding with an existing single antenna beam in communication satellites

    Get PDF
Interference has recently become a critical factor in communication satellite performance, and the interference source location is one of the most important factors in resolving this issue. The article proposes an innovative method of interference source direction-finding suitable for communication satellites with an existing single antenna beam and single radio frequency (RF) channel, which utilizes the symmetry of the antenna pattern to search for interference sources. Compared to traditional position methods with time-frequency-synchronized multi-satellites or a directing antenna array in a single satellite, the method does not require any particular direction-finding payload in communication satellites and shares existing antennas and RF channels with communication systems in satellites. The ability to find the direction of the interference source is a software-defined function in the communication processor. The proposed method provides a novel way to solve the problems of interference source direction-finding with the least engineering complexity, and it has excellent coexistence with other existing systems in communication satellites. The computer simulation and out-field experiment results in this article show that the method has excellent performance with high direction-finding resolution within extensive coverage, offering significant value and bright prospects for resolving the growing interference issues in communication satellites
