Scattering Matrix Theory For Nonlinear Transport

    Get PDF
We report a scattering matrix theory for dynamic and nonlinear transport in coherent mesoscopic conductors. In general this theory allows predictions of low frequency linear dynamic conductance, as well as weakly nonlinear DC conductance. It satisfies the conditions of gauge invariance and electric current conservation, and can be put into a form suitable for numerical computation. Using this theory we examine the third order weakly nonlinear DC conductance of a tunneling diode

Weakly Nonlinear AC Response: Theory and Application

    Get PDF
We report a microscopic and general theoretical formalism for electrical response which is appropriate for both DC and AC weakly nonlinear quantum transport. The formalism emphasizes the electron-electron interaction and maintains current conservation and gauge invariance. It makes a formal connection between linear response and scattering matrix theory at the weakly nonlinear level. We derive the dynamic conductance and predict the nonlinear-nonequilibrium charge distribution. The definition of a nonlinear capacitance leads to a remarkable scaling relation which can be measured to give microscopic information about a conductor

Nonlinear voltage dependence of shot noise

The current noise in a multi-probe mesoscopic conductor can have a nonlinear dependence on the strength of driving bias voltage. This paper presents a theoretical formulation for the nonlinear noise spectra. We pay special attention to maintain gauge invariance at the nonlinear level. At small but finite voltages, explicit expressions for nonlinear noise spectra, expanded order by order in the bias, have been derived. In the wideband limit, a closed form solution of the noise spectra for finite voltages is obtained

Negative Elongation Factor Controls Energy Homeostasis in Cardiomyocytes

SummaryNegative elongation factor (NELF) is known to enforce promoter-proximal pausing of RNA polymerase II (Pol II), a pervasive phenomenon observed across multicellular genomes. However, the physiological impact of NELF on tissue homeostasis remains unclear. Here, we show that whole-body conditional deletion of the B subunit of NELF (NELF-B) in adult mice results in cardiomyopathy and impaired response to cardiac stress. Tissue-specific knockout of NELF-B confirms its cell-autonomous function in cardiomyocytes. NELF directly supports transcription of those genes encoding rate-limiting enzymes in fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. NELF also shares extensively transcriptional target genes with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), a master regulator of energy metabolism in the myocardium. Mechanistically, NELF helps stabilize the transcription initiation complex at the metabolism-related genes. Our findings strongly indicate that NELF is part of the PPARα-mediated transcription regulatory network that maintains metabolic homeostasis in cardiomyocytes

Using 58 million J/ψJ/\psi and 14 million ψ(2S)\psi(2S) events collected by the BESII detector at the BEPC, branching fractions or upper limits for the decays J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(2S)ΛΛˉπ0\psi(2S) \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\pi^0 and ΛΛˉη\Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\eta are measured. For the isospin violating decays, the upper limits are determined to be B(J/ψΛΛˉπ0)<6.4×105{\cal B}(J/\psi \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\pi^0)<6.4\times 10^{-5} and B(ψ(2S)ΛΛˉπ0)<4.9×105{\cal B}(\psi(2S) \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\pi^0)<4.9\times 10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level. The isospin conserving process J/ψΛΛˉηJ/\psi \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\eta is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured to be B(J/ψΛΛˉη)=(2.62±0.60±0.44)×104{\cal B}(J/\psi \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\eta)=(2.62\pm 0.60\pm 0.44)\times 10^{-4}, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. No ΛΛˉη\Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\eta signal is observed in ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays, and B(ψ(2S)ΛΛˉη)<1.2×104{\cal B}(\psi(2S) \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}\eta)<1.2\times 10^{-4} is set at the 90% confidence level. Branching fractions of J/ψJ/\psi decays into Σ+πbarΛ\Sigma^+ \pi^- bar{\Lambda} and Σˉπ+Λ\bar{\Sigma}^- \pi^+ \Lambda are also reported, and the sum of these branching fractions is determined to be B(J/ψΣ+πΛˉ+c.c.)=(1.52±0.08±0.16)×103{\cal B}(J/\psi \to \Sigma^+\pi^- \bar{\Lambda} + c.c.)=(1.52\pm 0.08\pm 0.16)\times 10^{-3}.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4σ\sigma, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters sin2θ12\sin^2\theta_{12}, Δm212\Delta m^2_{21}, and Δmee2|\Delta m^2_{ee}| to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. \sim17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide \sim75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.Comment: 328 pages, 211 figure

Demographic and Clinical Features and Prescribing Patterns of Psychotropic Medications in Patients with the Melancholic Subtype of Major Depressive Disorder in China

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Little has been known about the demographic and clinical features of the melancholic subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD) in Chinese patients. This study examined the frequency of melancholia in Chinese MDD patients and explored its demographic and clinical correlates and prescribing patterns of psychotropic drugs. METHODS: A consecutively collected sample of 1,178 patients with MDD were examined in 13 psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric units of general hospitals in China nationwide. The cross-sectional data of patients' demographic and clinical characteristics and prescriptions of psychotropic drugs were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. The diagnosis of the melancholic subtype was established using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Medications ascertained included antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics and benzodiazepines. RESULTS: Six hundred and twenty nine (53.4%) of the 1,178 patients fulfilled criteria for melancholia. In multiple logistic regression analyses, compared to non-melancholic counterparts, melancholic MDD patients were more likely to be male and receive benzodiazepines, had more frequent suicide ideations and attempts and seasonal depressive episodes, while they were less likely to be employed and receive antidepressants and had less family history of psychiatric disorders and lifetime depressive episodes. CONCLUSIONS: The demographic and clinical features of melancholic MDD in Chinese patients were not entirely consistent with those found in Western populations. Compared to non-melancholic MDD patients, melancholic patients presented with different demographic and clinical features, which have implications for treatment decisions
