    Behind China’s English Fever: The Contested Discourses on English Education and People’s Yearning for Flexible Citizenship

    I propose a study on China’s English Fever under the interdisciplinary framework of cultural studies. Having taught English at the university level in China, I have had the opportunity not only to witness such a English-learning phenomenon that has been sweeping the country for about three decades, but also to teach students who are incredibly enthusiastic in learning English, regardless of their majors and of their initially drastically different English proficiency levels. What always intrigues me is the question of why: Why are Chinese people so dedicated to learning English? The proposed study is an attempt to look for some plausible answers to this central question from two related yet separate, not always aligned perspectives: the perspective of the government and that of the common people. Situating China’s English fever under the broad and discursive framework of cultural studies, I will mainly draw on poststructuralism and Derridean deconstruction. The proposed study will begin with a review of the development of English language education in China, tracing back the history of how English replaced Russia in the late 1970s in the national school curriculum. The second part of the study will explore the Chinese government’s two contested discourses on English education—“English for everyone” vs. “English not important”—via analyzing the news and editorials from China’s most authoritative media outlets, such as China Daily and Xinhua News Agency. The third part will investigate Chinese people’s continuing obsession with English despite the government’s recurring backlashes against English by analyzing people’s discussion about reasons of learning English on major Chinese social media, such Baidu Tieba and Douban. My major augments/findings are: 1) China’s English fever is much more than an urge to master a global language; instead it is driven both by the government’s pro-English language education policy and by people’s yearning for mobility and flexible citizenship. 2) The Chinese government’s contested discourses on the English language education reflect its ambivalent attitudes towards the West, as well as an undercurrent worry about its national identity in an age of globalization and cultural hybridity

    A compact statistical model of the song syntax in Bengalese finch

    Songs of many songbird species consist of variable sequences of a finite number of syllables. A common approach for characterizing the syntax of these complex syllable sequences is to use transition probabilities between the syllables. This is equivalent to the Markov model, in which each syllable is associated with one state, and the transition probabilities between the states do not depend on the state transition history. Here we analyze the song syntax in a Bengalese finch. We show that the Markov model fails to capture the statistical properties of the syllable sequences. Instead, a state transition model that accurately describes the statistics of the syllable sequences includes adaptation of the self-transition probabilities when states are repeatedly revisited, and allows associations of more than one state to the same syllable. Such a model does not increase the model complexity significantly. Mathematically, the model is a partially observable Markov model with adaptation (POMMA). The success of the POMMA supports the branching chain network hypothesis of how syntax is controlled within the premotor song nucleus HVC, and suggests that adaptation and many-to-one mapping from neural substrates to syllables are important features of the neural control of complex song syntax

    HIV prevalence and undiagnosed infection among a community sample of gay and bisexual men in Scotland, 2005-2011: implications for HIV testing policy and prevention

    <b>Objective</b><p></p> To examine HIV prevalence, HIV testing behaviour, undiagnosed infection and risk factors for HIV positivity among a community sample of gay men in Scotland.<p></p> <b>Methods</b><p></p> Cross-sectional survey of gay and bisexual men attending commercial gay venues in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland with voluntary anonymous HIV testing of oral fluid samples in 2011. A response rate of 65.2% was achieved (1515 participants).<p></p> <b>Results</b><p></p> HIV prevalence (4.8%, 95% confidence interval, CI 3.8% to 6.2%) remained stable compared to previous survey years (2005 and 2008) and the proportion of undiagnosed infection among HIV-positive men (25.4%) remained similar to that recorded in 2008. Half of the participants who provided an oral fluid sample stated that they had had an HIV test in the previous 12 months; this proportion is significantly higher when compared to previous study years (50.7% versus 33.8% in 2005, p<0.001). Older age (>25 years) was associated with HIV positivity (1.8% in those <25 versus 6.4% in older ages group) as was a sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis within the previous 12 months (adjusted odds ratio 2.13, 95% CI 1.09–4.14). There was no significant association between age and having an STI or age and any of the sexual behaviours recorded.<p></p> <b>Conclusion</b><p></p> HIV transmission continues to occur among gay and bisexual men in Scotland. Despite evidence of recent testing within the previous six months, suggesting a willingness to test, the current opt-out policy may have reached its limit with regards to maximising HIV test uptake. Novel strategies are required to improve regular testing opportunities and more frequent testing as there are implications for the use of other biomedical HIV interventions.<p></p&gt

    Development and Validation of Apolipoprotein AI-Associated Lipoprotein Proteome Panel for the Prediction of Cholesterol Efflux Capacity and Coronary Artery Disease

    BACKGROUND: Cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) is a measure of HDL function that, in cell-based studies, has demonstrated an inverse association with cardiovascular disease. The cell-based measure of CEC is complex and low-throughput. We hypothesized that assessment of the lipoprotein proteome would allow for precise, high-throughput CEC prediction. METHODS: After isolating lipoprotein particles from serum, we used LC-MS/MS to quantify 21 lipoprotein-associated proteins. A bioinformatic pipeline was used to identify proteins with univariate correlation to cell-based CEC measurements and generate a multivariate algorithm for CEC prediction (pCE). Using logistic regression, protein coefficients in the pCE model were reweighted to yield a new algorithm predicting coronary artery disease (pCAD). RESULTS: Discovery using targeted LC-MS/MS analysis of 105 training and test samples yielded a pCE model comprising 5 proteins (Spearman r = 0.86). Evaluation of pCE in a case-control study of 231 specimens from healthy individuals and patients with coronary artery disease revealed lower pCE in cases (P = 0.03). Derived within this same study, the pCAD model significantly improved classification (P < 0.0001). Following analytical validation of the multiplexed proteomic method, we conducted a case-control study of myocardial infarction in 137 postmenopausal women that confirmed significant separation of specimen cohorts in both the pCE (P = 0.015) and pCAD (P = 0.001) models. CONCLUSIONS: Development of a proteomic pCE provides a reproducible high-throughput alternative to traditional cell-based CEC assays. The pCAD model improves stratification of case and control cohorts and, with further studies to establish clinical validity, presents a new opportunity for the assessment of cardiovascular health

By spatiotemporal subchannel selection and power control, it aims to minimize the average transmit power (ATP) of the MIMO system while achieving an exponential type of average bit error rate (BER) for each data stream. Under the constraints on each subchannel that individual outage probability and average BER are given, based on a traditional upper bound and a dynamic upper bound of Q function, two closed-form ATP expressions are derived, respectively, which can result in two different power allocation schemes. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis, and show that the power allocation scheme with the dynamic upper bound can achieve more power savings than the one with the traditional upper bound.Peer reviewe

    Two-dimensional amine and hydroxy functionalized fused aromatic covalent organic framework

    Ordered two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have generally been synthesized using reversible reactions. It has been difficult to synthesize a similar degree of ordered COFs using irreversible reactions. Developing COFs with a fused aromatic ring system via an irreversible reaction is highly desirable but has remained a significant challenge. Here we demonstrate a COF that can be synthesized from organic building blocks via irreversible condensation (aromatization). The as-synthesized robust fused aromatic COF (F-COF) exhibits high crystallinity. Its lattice structure is characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray diffraction pattern. Because of its fused aromatic ring system, the F-COF structure possesses high physiochemical stability, due to the absence of hydrolysable weak covalent bonds
