Evaluation of touch trigger probe measurement uncertainty using FEA
Evaluation of measurement uncertainty is an essential subject in dimensional measurement. It has also become a dominant issue in coordinate measuring machine (CMM) even though its machine performance has been well accepted by many users. CMM probes, especially touch trigger probes which are commonly used, have been acknowledged as a key error source, largely due to pre-travel variations. The probe errors result in large measurement uncertainty in CMM measurement. Various methods have been introduced to estimate measurement uncertainty, but they tend to be time consuming and necessarily require a large amount of experimental data for analyzing the uncertainty. This paper presents the method of evaluation of CMM probe uncertainty using FEA modeling. It is started with the investigation of the behavior of probe by recording stylus displacement with vary triggering force. Then, those displacement results will be analyzed with sensitivity analysis technique to estimate the uncertainty of recorded results

Experimental validation of FEA modelling of touch trigger probes
The authors have previously proposed the use of finite element method (FEM) for the modeling of coordinate measuring machine probes. Whilst the modeling results have been published previously, this paper presents the detailed experimental validation to compare the FEM and experimental results. The comparison shows that the agreement is generally good with probing contacts at lower latitudes near the equator of the reference sphere. The differences between the modeling and experimental results become large at higher latitudes. This is believed to be mainly caused by the sliding effects which occur during probing contact in the experiments
Symbolic computation for evaluation of measurement uncertainty
In recent years, with the rapid development of symbolic computation, the integration of symbolic and numeric methods is increasingly applied in various applications. This paper proposed the use of symbolic computation for the evaluation of measurement uncertainty. The general method and procedure are discussed, and its great potential and powerful features for measurement uncertainty evaluation has been demonstrated through examples
Finite elements modeling and simulation of probe system
Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) have been widely used for enhancing product quality, productivity and reliability. This powerful instrument assists the user by providing them with highly accurate and reliable measurement results. Many studies involving the application of various different methods have been carried out to enhance the performance of CMM. This paper discusses the application of finite element analysis (FEA) to study the probe system of CMM. Finite element modeling is utilized to investigate the displacement of the probe stylus, pre-travel variation (lobing effects) and the associated measurement uncertainty. Different characteristics of styli have been considered and the corresponding effects on the probe operation are reported
Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Physical and Mental Fatigue in Youth with Cerebral Palsy
This explorative study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns, and social distancing on mental and physical fatigue and life role participation of youth with CP. Quantitative data included results from the Fatigue Impact and Severity Self-Assessment (FISSA), Child & Adolescent Scale of Participation (CASP) and the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY)
On Feedback Vertex Set: New Measure and New Structures
We present a new parameterized algorithm for the {feedback vertex set}
problem ({\sc fvs}) on undirected graphs. We approach the problem by
considering a variation of it, the {disjoint feedback vertex set} problem ({\sc
disjoint-fvs}), which finds a feedback vertex set of size that has no
overlap with a given feedback vertex set of the graph . We develop an
improved kernelization algorithm for {\sc disjoint-fvs} and show that {\sc
disjoint-fvs} can be solved in polynomial time when all vertices in have degrees upper bounded by three. We then propose a new
branch-and-search process on {\sc disjoint-fvs}, and introduce a new
branch-and-search measure. The process effectively reduces a given graph to a
graph on which {\sc disjoint-fvs} becomes polynomial-time solvable, and the new
measure more accurately evaluates the efficiency of the process. These
algorithmic and combinatorial studies enable us to develop an
-time parameterized algorithm for the general {\sc fvs} problem,
improving all previous algorithms for the problem.Comment: Final version, to appear in Algorithmic
Online Marking System for Vula
The University of Cape Town is in the process to migrate its course contents from a disparate number of learning management systems to the new Vula system. As the management of course contents is often done using different systems through various interfaces, Vula will be providing a common solution to all elearning needs at UCT.
However, Vula does not currently provide a tool that allows the creation of marking guides and the subsequent use of such a marking guide for inputting marks and comments as feedbacks to students.
This report describes the process of creating such a tool - the Vula Marking System , as it aims to solve the above problem, using J2EE and JavaScript Technologies, and essentially acts as a single entry point for all input of marks into Vula
A note on anti-coordination and social interactions
This note confirms a conjecture of [Bramoull\'{e}, Anti-coordination and
social interactions, Games and Economic Behavior, 58, 2007: 30-49]. The
problem, which we name the maximum independent cut problem, is a restricted
version of the MAX-CUT problem, requiring one side of the cut to be an
independent set. We show that the maximum independent cut problem does not
admit any polynomial time algorithm with approximation ratio better than
, where is the number of nodes, and arbitrarily
small, unless P=NP. For the rather special case where each node has a degree of
at most four, the problem is still MAXSNP-hard.Comment: 7 page
TGF-beta(2)- and H2O2-Induced Biological Changes in Optic Nerve Head Astrocytes Are Reduced by the Antioxidant Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Background/Aims: The goal of the present study was to determine whether transforming growth factor-beta(2) (TGF-beta(2))- and oxidative stress-induced cellular changes in cultured human optic nerve head (ONH) astrocytes could be reduced by pretreatment with the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (LA). Methods: Cultured ONH astrocytes were treated with 1.0 ng/ml TGF-beta(2) for 24 h or 200 mu M hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 1 h. Lipid peroxidation was measured by a decrease in cis-pari-naric acid fluorescence. Additionally, cells were pretreated with different concentrations of LA before TGF-beta 2 or H2O2 exposure. Expressions of the heat shock protein (Hsp) alpha B-crystallin and Hsp27, the extracellular matrix (ECM) component fibronectin and the ECM-modulating protein connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) were examined with immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR analysis. Results: Both TGF-beta(2) and H2O2 increased lipid peroxidation. Treatment of astrocytes with TGF-beta(2) and H2O2 upregulated the expression of alpha B-crystallin, Hsp27, fibronectin and CTGF. Pretreatment with different concentrations of LA reduced the TGF-beta(2)- and H2O2-stimulated gene expressions. Conclusion: We showed that TGF-beta(2)- and H2O2-stimulated gene expressions could be prevented by pretreatment with the antioxidant LA in cultured human ONH astrocytes. Therefore, it is tempting to speculate that the use of antioxidants could have protective effects in glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Base
The Maximal Inverse Seesaw from Operator and Oscillating Asymmetric Sneutrino Dark Matter
The maximal supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism (MSIS)
provides a natural way to relate asymmetric dark matter (ADM) with neutrino
physics. In this paper we point out that, MSIS is a natural outcome if one
dynamically realizes the inverse seesaw mechanism in the next-to minimal
supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) via the dimension-five operator
, with the NMSSM singlet developing TeV scale VEV; it
slightly violates lepton number due to the suppression by the fundamental scale
, thus preserving maximally. The resulting sneutrino is a
distinguishable ADM candidate, oscillating and favored to have weak scale mass.
A fairly large annihilating cross section of such a heavy ADM is available due
to the presence of singlet.Comment: journal versio
